ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
BULLITT DIRECTOR DEPARTS Deadline Hollywood reports that 4-time Oscar nominee British film director/producer Peter Yates passes away at 82 in London after a long illness. Peter's first American film, Bullitt in 1968 that stars Steve McQueen is one of the definitive cop movies of all time. The fast-moving car chase scene through the streets of San Francisco with Steve behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang still thrills us movie buffs. Peter is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He is a stage actor before he becomes an assistant director for Tony Richardson. Yates' debut as a feature director is the early 1960s low-budget film Summer Holiday in 1963 with Rock singer Cliff Richard and the Shadows. He quickly moves on up with his 1967 crime thriller movie, Robbery, which depicts Britain's The Great Train Robbery. Next comes Bullitt with Steve McQueen. Yates directs several films that includes John and Mary (1969), Murphy's War (1971), The Hot Rock (1972), The Friends Of Eddie Coyle (1973), For Pete's Sake (1974), The Deep (1977), Breaking Away (1979), Eyewitness (1981), The Dresser (1983), Krull (1983), Eleni (1985), Suspect (1987), The House on Carroll Street (1988), An Innocent Man (1989), Year of the Comet (1992), Roommates (1995) and Curtain Call (1999). Peter makes fine actors like Robert Mitchum look even better. How about Jackie Bissett in a wet T-shirt? Robert Redford in his prime. He catches Peter O'Toole pre Lawrence of Arabia. We sit in the passenger seat of Steve McQueen's ultra fast Mustang. Peter Yates is a one-of-a-kind movie director/producer the likes of we may never witness again.

JIM TRAVIS [Jo] (Hot Springs, AR) Subject: Too Old? Well, I went, I jocked, and now I'm headed back to Arkansas. After doing only 9 shows, the 30 something GM of the new KBAY in Marble Falls, TX handed me my walking papers. She said I wasn't "lively" enough, which I think must be the PC way of saying "too old". She replaced me with a 20 something guy. I guess she wanted a young, shock jock type. I just did what I've always done. It was supposed to be classic country after all, and if I'm not classic country, who is? Oh well, I just hope at my age, I can find my way back to the hills of Arkansas without getting lost. Not a lot of $$$ but a little raise each year and Christmas bonus which is what I as a family man needed AND Morris never laid off a soul during the oil bust. WE extended shifts when somebody would leave but once Dave decided you were ok you just about had to kill somebody to get fired. Be well. DrB
