ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
BAY AREA HALL OF FAMER PERISHES Citadel reports that one of KSFO-560 San Francisco's most legendary former radio personalities, Carter B. Smith, succumbs to brain cancer at 74 in his home in Tiburon on Monday, January 24, 2011. KSFO's Web site (www.ksfo.com) reads: Smith had three different stints at KSFO, most notably as part of the Don Sherwood Morning Show throughout the 1960’s. A dedicated radio man, ‘Carter B’ once spent 18 hours riding a San Francisco cable car to raise funds for the efforts toward their restoration. He also had one of the largest collections of T-shirts in the world, numbering over 6,000, some of which he donated to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC. San Francisco-born Carter Blakemore Smith receives his early education at Lowell High School and San Francisco State College. His radio career begins as an intern at KSAN-1450 in the mid-1950s. His first fulltime on-air position is in Red Bluff. Before his name becomes a household word on the Don Sherwood morning show on KSFO, he is behind the mic on Berkeley's KRE-1400, KRE FM (102.9) and KSFR FM (94.9). Over the years he is on-the-air on KSFO three different times. Carter's voice is also heard on KNBR-680, Magic 61 KFRC-610 and KABL-960. In the mid 1980s he migrates to KABL FM (92.1) in Walnut Creek. Carter Blakemore Smith The Prince Trapped inside the Body of a Disc Jockey elects to the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in 2007.

MID-EASTERN JOURNALISTS BEATEN For the past few days all across our TV screens are pictures of violent eruptions from Egyptian plainclothes and uniformed security personnel toward youthful protestors. In just two days at least 10 journalists are beaten. Others detained. The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns this violence with respect to journalists who cover the demonstrations in Egypt. According to news reports, the protests begin on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 after an Internet campaign calls for a national Day of Anger with anti-government protests. These are the largest mass demonstrations since the January 1977 bread riots. Mohamed Abdel Dayem, CPJ's Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, shouts: We call on Cairo to bring to an immediate end all forms of violence against the media, release all detained journalists, and lift online censorship. Local journalists say that CPJ Egyptian authorities block access to at least two websites of local online newspapers: Al-Dustour and El-Badil. According to multiple news reports, the Egyptian government also jams domestic access to social networking sites Twitter and Facebook, plus video-streaming website Bambuser.

BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Subject: Rusty Bell. Thanks to Henry for the info on Rusty Bell. I wondered what had happened to him. I worked for him for a short time at the appropriately named KOKE FM. In addition to Rusty and Henry were the likes of, "Candy Kicker", Joe Gracey, Speedy Perez and Jack Starr (Jim Huntley) We frequently made trips in Rusty's Judge to the Broken Spoke, Alliance Wagon Yard, Soap Creek Saloon, Raw Deal and of course the 'Dillo". We used to make bets on which of us would be arrested first. Oddly, even though we tried, neither was when we went together. I, of course, was fired for something as expected. Perhaps it was when I told then GM Ken Moyer that he shouldn't be in radio but rather should be selling bar b que. Interestingly, when he left KOKE he opened a bar b que place. Glad I could help. DIANNA MILLER-GRAY (Houston-Cypress, TX) Subject: Hi j rose. Actually by '72 I was married and living in Indiana. I do remember that tennis game; you hit a serve that whacked my sunglasses right between my eyes! Oh well, good to have contact with an old and dear friend. I was mightily crazy about you, but could not get commitment so had to find fresh waters and met Dear David...the rest is history. We must talk, so call me tomorrow morning; I will be in my home office working until about 11:30; then I have to go celebrate a friend's birthday. Take care and love that doggie. Dianna Gray, CLHMS. ARTHUR ASHE (July 10, 1943-February 6, 1993) I don't want to be remembered for my tennis accomplishments.
