ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

FIRE DESTROYS CASH'S GUITARS On Thursday evening, February 25, 2011 a massive fire breaks out at the home of Nashville, TN songwriter Carl Knight. The 81 year-old Knight says that he and his wife grill food on their back patio when the barbecue catches fire. Dozens of items that he collects over the years as a songwriter for legends such as Loretta Lynn, Mel Tillis and Jerry Lee Lewis go up in flames: Everything’s gone. There’s just no way to replace stuff like that. The flames devour four of Johnny Cash’s guitars along with a piano and a 102-year-old mandolin that Maybelle Carter once owns. Carl says that these are items that he buys from one of Johnny's children. Knight resides in the 9,000-square-foot home on Forest Retreat Road in Hendersonville, TN since 1983. He says that the Discovery Channel films a special at his home recently that describes his music career and music collection. The show goes on the air in April 2011. In 2003, Johnny Cash passes away. Carl remembers that he and Johnny perform together on the radio plus TV's Louisiana Hayride. The first time I did the show, he let me use his band. In 2010, Carl inducts into the Mississippi Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. He also earns a Lifetime Achievement award from the Nashville Songwriters Festival.

SHEEN AND 'MEN' DOWN AND OUT FOR THE COUNT Warner Brothers and CBS TV will not resume production of Two and a Half Men for the rest of the 2011 season and new production may never resume at all. The show's execs try to force its star Charlie Sheen into rehab treatment after monumental episodes of drugs, booze and prostitutes that recently bring SOS rescue signals to his exquisite chateau. Of prime importance is that this chain reaction of events leads to the immediate loss of jobs for 200 employees. What causes the show's abrupt shut down is Sheen with his brutal clumps of fury toward series creator-executive producer Chuck Lorre. Two and a Half Men is the most watched comedy on American television. Charlie Sheen's $1.8 million take per episode makes him the highest paid actor on TV. When recordings of Charlie's interview with Austin, TX syndicated radio host Alex Jones land on the Internet, the solar system goes ballistic. Some interpret Sheen's remarks as anti-Semitic when he refers to creator-executive producer Chuck Lorre as Chaim which is the Hebrew translation of Lorre’s first name Charles: OK, last I checked, Chaim, I spent I think close to the last decade effortlessly and magically converting your tin cans into pure gold, and the gratitude I get is this charlatan chose not to do his job, which is to write. Charlie tells TMZ: I was referring to Chuck by his real name, because I wanted to address the man, not the...TV persona. Charlie Sheen's shuck and jive attitude and rock house mentality reaps havoc on scores of people other than just himself.

BOB MILLER (Detroit-Plymouth, MI) Subject: Eli Wallach. Hi Jim, I heard a rumor that Eli Wallach will get an Oscar for a lifetime achievement award this week. He's 95 and his portrayal of Tuco in The Good The Bad and the Ugly was a terrific role. He was born in a Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn and graduated from UT in 1938 with a Master's degree. During that time he was in a play with Walter Cronkite and Ann Sheridan. But, I'll always remember him as "Tuco"... Bob Miller, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI

ROY LEMONS [KCUL-1540, KBUY-1540 GM] (Grove, OK) Subject: Bill Mack. Bill Mack worked for KBUY. I was General Manager when he left the station. Not sure of the year, he did the morning slot 6-10. Roy Lemons; Grove, Ok.

ED MILLER [KPCN-730 Owner/OM/Newscaster] (Austin, TX) Subject: A controversy. Jim, KPCN (730) really was a blast, wasn't it? Although like you and many others I went on to work at a dozen or more other stations around Texas and the rest of the country, when I think back to the good ol' days of having fun in hot, creative, and personality-driven local radio, it's KPCN that I'm really thinking of. We didn't know how good we had it then, did we, until we left there and had to go to work for some of the other stuffed shirts and bean counters in broadcasting that squeezed all the life out of radio in their relentless search for profit. Good to hear from you, Jim. Keep up the good work. Regards, -Ed

JIM GOUGH [Mr. Texas-TV/movie actor-TV/radio voice-overs] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Radio story. Jim, One of my listeners at KRLD called one night and said "Jim you're always talking about your cowboy poet friend in South Dakota...that ain’t nothin'. I'm calling from North Dakota, driving an 18 wheeler with a load of hogs!" The listeners and their stories are what I miss the most. I'll send some more of these kind. Good to link up with you man! TRIVIA ANSWER: Duane Allen lead singer of the Oak Ridge Boys appears in season 2 (1998) episode #1 of My Classic Car with Dennis Gage. Duane shows us his Classic car collection plus he takes us for a spin with Dennis in his limited edition Excalibur. We ask Duane if he still has his marvelous Excalibur motor car.

DUANE ALLEN [Lead singer of The Oak Ridge Boys] (Hendersonville, TN) Subject: Classic Excalibur automobile on My Classic Car TV show? Yes it was...and, that "X" was the cover of the magazine. It is #14 of 50 built in 1984, their anniversary year. It has less than 10,000 miles, never been titled, and is in excellent shape...price $125,000. It is the first year that they made a back seat. It has a hard top and a soft top. It is for sale, and the first check that clears a bank account for that amount will have a new Excalibur. Oh yes, I still have all my car collection. We are going through all of my cars and I am selling them off, one by one...DUANE

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [KRCS-550 DJ] (Marshall, TX) Subject: Did you know Jim, KVIA TV in El Paso, Texas was KILT TV? From Wikipedia, the station signed on the air on September 1, 1956 on channel 13, originally as KILT TV and was owned by famous television and radio personality Gordon McLendon. It adopted the KELP TV call sign in 1957. After short period of ownership, the McClendon Investment Corporation sold KILT TV to Joseph Harris and Norman Alexander in March 1957. The TV station became KELP TV before the John B. Walton, Jr. purchase in January 1966. Leslie Wayne Hodges (www.kzqx.com)

SPIKE MILLIGAN (1918-2002) Is there anything worn under the kilt? No, it's all in perfect working order.
