WSIX DEEP SIXES KAUFMAN Shock and awe strikes the broadcast industry as radio dominos begin to fall. Clear Channel Market Manager Tom English posts an alarming email: Keith Kaufman is no longer a member of the WSIX team. We wish Keith well in all of his future endeavors. Our search for the Next Great Country Programmer begins immediately. Interested parties should send their information to PD@wsix.com. Keith is WSIX FM (97.9) PD in Music City for nearly 15 years. Prior to WSIX FM, Kaufman is Director of Marketing & Broadcast Operations for Clear Channel's 5-station group in Nashville, TN. Before that, Keith is CC's group Marketing & Promotions Manager. For radio magic, reach out and touch Keith Kaufman at Keith2112@comcast.net.

LOUISVILLE CHOPPER MIRAGE Visualize a news helicopter hovering over a crime scene. We see huge graphics on its side with a TV station's call letters. How exciting this is to be this close to real news live in action. But when the copter swirls around, we see call letters from a different TV station on its other side. We are thousands of miles away from Muammar al-Gaddafi's Libyan Desert in North Africa so this cannot be a mirage. No, it's not an April Fool's joke, either. This is merely a new news helicopter partnership between two top TV stations in Louisville, KY. WHAS TV CH11 and WAVE TV CH3 enter into an unusual game plan. According to http://louisvilleky.com/ beginning on Friday, April 1, 2011 Belo-owned ABC-affiliate WHAS TV and Raycom Media-owned NBC-affiliate WAVE TV will begin sharing a news helicopter provided by Helicopters Incorporated from its base in St. Louis. Mamma mia! Broadcast consolidation breeds constipation.
COURIC AND ANDERSON TO 60 MINUTES? Katie Couric's five-year contract at CBS TV ends in June 2011. A person who is familiar with the situation tells The Wrap that she is likely to step down as the anchor of "CBS Evening News", but could stay with the network as a regular on "60 Minutes" and host a daytime talk show. Anderson Cooper launches his own talk show in fall 2011 to take over Opra Winfrey's TV time spot which ends on May 25th. She plans to concentrate on her new OWN cable TV Network. This places two arch rivals Anderson Cooper and Katie Couric in a TV talk sparring match. Matthew Hiltzik, Couric's spokesman, explains: Katie’s on a long-planned vacation with her family this week and hopefully people can take time off from the speculation, too.
FM NEWS TALK MAKES RADIO HISTORY Up to now the top-billing radio station here in America is Clear Channel CHR powerhouse KIIS FM (102.7) in Los Angeles, CA. But according to BIA/Kelsey, KIIS FM moves to #2 because Bonneville’s News/Talk WTOP FM (103.5) Washington, DC leaps to #1 with 2010's largest revenue of more than $57 million in billings. News/Talk conquers AM radio and now the FM band is in its hand, too.

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego-San Marcos, CA) Hi Jim, The big record labels have combined their assets...they now have a gangnopoly over the music business. Even those artists who have created their own labels are distributing thru the old labels...the percentage of $$$$ in some case is as much as 50% of everything. Radio play is almost non existent for people such as myself. The labels push only those who kowtow to the beat of their drum. The reason for some people making a big splash and then fading into the sun set...if their dollars don't add up...lots of luck. Internet distribution is OK for some major acts...but they make little $$ if they try to go independent. I know the headlines about some of the groups doing well...some even give their music away to attract people to live venues. It's changed big time Jim. Even if I get a major hit as a writer...I'll probably have to give up 50% of my copyright minimum...just to get the opportunity. That's just the way it is. CC
RANDY MORGAN [Ed Duffel] (Nashville, TN) Subject: KBUC. Hello! Enjoyed your writings on KBUC. I worked at KBUC from June 1975 until October of 1976. Had a great time at the corner of Houston and Commerce. Randy Morgan

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Jim; I've been in touch with some of my favorites from the S.A. Radio days. Mark Carrillo, Hector Reyes and Tom Scheppke. Hard to believe we go back 35+ years. Also hard to believe none of us are on the air right now (except for the 15 stations my newscasts air on with Audience Bakery.) Son Patrick volunteered at SXSW, and was given access to some of the shows. He got to see the Bubble Puppy reunion! He also saw The Strokes and some others. He says he had a good time. Ah, to be 19 again! Take care Jim. bc

DON TIFFIN (Dallas-The Colony, TX) Jim, Well you turned out OK and became a good radio personality well known. So things work out. Me, a kid that almost hated school at times, finished college and got a degree in physics and did several different things. I went to school for three years before getting the degree and got a summer job at TI in their main lab and worked there almost 4 years...then went back to school to finish. Then worked for the Germans, Siemens and was a field service engineer on electron microscopes, covered all of Texas by myself...lots of late nights and driving and flying around...Got tired of that got a job back in a new lab at Mostek (they made DRAMs). Became lab manager and the lab got larger. Left there and started my own small company doing lab work at universities for 26 companies...then went to AMD to start their fab support lab and manage it in Austin, then tried to retire early at 50. But, the stock market crashed and I ended up back at Sematech in Austin running their lab for another 3 years before heading back to DFW where we are now. Got to do some interesting things and work with some interesting people along the way. Sort of glad to be retired though and out of that stuff. Got more time to do other stuff now, not that we do that much. But it's OK... Don

HAROLD LEVINE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Launching our fifth internet station. Jim, just to let you know that we are launching the fifth station of The Bop Radio Group hopefully in the next two weeks: R.A.B. Radio 1 - "Celebrating the First Two Decades of Rhythm & Blues!" covering the hits as charted on the various Billboard R&B charts from 1942-1961. Any bets who will send me a cease and desist order first--Radio One, the BBC or the Radio Advertising Bureau...but the name flows really well in the jingles. Harold Levine; Program Director; Radio Bop | RadioBop.com | "Your Never-Ending Nonstop Sock Hop!"
