ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
PHOEBE SNOW, R.I.P. One of the sweetest voices this side of Heaven now sings praises in Canaan Land. Phoebe Snow dies from a brain hemorrhage at only 58. Phoebe Ann Laub enters this earth on July 17, 1952 in NYC. She grows up in NJ. In the early 1970s, Phoebe briefly marries and gives birth to daughter Valerie who is born with brain damage. She cares for her daughter Valerie until 2007 when she passes away at 31. In 1974, Leon Russell's Shelter Records releases Phoebe Snow's first self-titled album that contains her biggest hit, Poetry Man. In 1975, when I'm MD/DJ on Top 40 KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth, TX Phoebe's Poetry Man is a hot tune. The song quickly rises to #5. Later, she teams up with Paul Simon for a rousing good time Rock and Roll song Gone At Last in his album Still Crazy After All These Years. In 1978, Phoebe's album Against The Grain features Paul McCartney's tune Every Night. In 1970 Paul releases Every Night in his McCartney album. Phoebe’s last appearance on the chart is in 1989 with her album Something Real which lands at #29. After that, she eases back on her music career. One of her last live performances is at Camp David in 1999 for Bill and Hilary Clinton. She also sings at Howard Stern’s wedding in 2008. In 2010, Snow plans to release a comeback album. She, also, schedules a tour. But, in January 2010, she suffers a stroke that causes a brain hemorrhage. Phoebe Snow never records or appears on stage again.

COURIC EXITS THE EYE Countess Katie Couric begrudgingly relinquishes her coveted CBS Evening News crown to a lesser feudal subject. Her $15 million-a-year CBS contract expires on June 5, 2011. Couric confirms in a statement on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 that the end draweth nigh to her place setting at the CBS Evening News table. She still is reluctant to give an exact date. Why doesn't she just take the money and run before a stage hand reaches out with a hook to yank her off the stage? Five years of the heavily promoted Katie Couric and CBS Evening News remains at #3 behind ABC and NBC television prime time news. Doesn't seem that very long ago that CBS TV lures Katie away from her anchor seat on NBC's Today show with high hopes of her lifting CBS out of #3 doldrums but five years later and it's still the same. Couric places the blame on local TV stations not giving her good lead ins. As early as next week CBS expects to pull in 60 Minutes show vet Scott Pelley as her successor.

DAVE MICHAELS (San Diego-Culver City, CA) Subject: Still alive and Well... Jim...in the words of Johnny & Edgar Winter (Roadwork Album) I was also sorry to hear about Dave's passing. My Texas radio career included Elkins Institute circa 1967 (License course 1st Phone) and than some Lone Star radio work at KQRO, (KEIR), KBUC FM, KONO and too many U-hauls to remember! Many of us have been there, done that; and a marriage along the way. It's all a growing experience! I guess what "life" is all about. Dave Michaels Culver City, CA
FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Jim, I was also teaching at Elkins then (1967), Broadcasting, I probably taught Dave (Michaels), I just don't remember, too long ago. I remember Richard Poynter and Leonard Hancock the engineer, both great guys. And I did the night news (KLIF-1190) with Chuck Boyles. Wow, a long time ago. Take care. Happy Easter. Remember to pray for President Obama Psalms 109:8. Frank Haley cjf New Mexico: "Land of the flea and Home of the plague" My life's verse: Isa. 9:6 (read it) No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a great number of electrons were inconvenienced.

ROY LEMONS (Grove, OK) Hi. Sorry to hear about Huey P. Meaux. I first met Huey in the early 60's when I joined KRCT (KIKK-650) in Pasadena as Sales Manager. Leroy Gloger had just bought the station after Robert C. Touchstone moved it to Pasadena (TX) from Baytown. Touchstone also owned a furniture store in Galena Park, Gloger had sold his service station to buy KRCT. Huey had a barbershop in the building that KRCT operated from in downtown Pasadena. Huey was a good barber but had some great tales. Not sure where he moved to after KIKK moved to the suburbs.

JIM BELL [KUFH FM 88.7 Retired 1997-2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Too Much Sex and Violence? You're right. Charlie Sheen IS playing himself on that show. Every detail of the character he plays comes from his own personality and the kind of life he leads. Watching it was one of my "guilty pleasures" for a long time because he was laugh out loud funny, the way a middle age reprobate uncle can be funny. There IS comedy potential in that, but when he started parading his drugged out life with hookers and porn stars around the country in public, and allowing them to live in his house with his two small kids, he stopped being funny and I stopped watching. He lives that way because he can. He makes millions and spends every dollar of it on drugs, hookers and porn stars. What a guy. His parents must be so proud. Jim Bell (Ret); Lufkin, TX

JEROME DAVIS (DFW-Colleyville, TX) Greetings Mr. Rose. I don't know that we've ever met, but I've heard great things about you over the years. I was in radio-TV in the 60s and 70s, before taking a public relations turn (see brief resume). Tony Bridge, the man who gave me my first gig at KMHT in Marshall, has nominated me for the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, and I'd like to ask for your support for that nomination. It would be most appreciated. If you have any questions, please get back to me. Hope to see you and say "hi" at the fall installation event. Thanks very much. Jerome Davis
TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1948 William S. Paley moves CBS' biggest radio stars Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Edgar Bergen (father of future CBS star Candice Bergen) and Amos 'n' Andy over to CBS TV who become even bigger television stars.
MIKE BRAUN (Fort Worth, TX) Jim, KWTX-AM, Waco, will celebrate 65 years of serving Central Texas on May 1 (2011). KWTX was founded by Beauford Jester of Corsicana and a group of Waco businessmen. Jester would later become the 36th governor of Texas, serving from 1947-1949, when he died of a heart attack while in office. The application for KWTX was made in 1941, but the start of World War II imposed equipment and construction restrictions, which delayed approval and completion for five years. The inaugural broadcast occurred at 11 a.m. on May 1, 1946, at "1-2-3 on your dial" (1230kc) from a studio in downtown Waco. The station aired a mix of music, news, sports and drama, and was affiliated with the Mutual radio network. Twenty-eight-year-old M.N. "Buddy" Bostick was station manager. Mr. Bostick later became president of KWTX Broadcasting Company. KWTX moved to a new facility on Bosque Boulevard in Waco in the early '50s. The building would become known as Broadcast Center and share space with KWTX-TV (Channel 10) in 1955 and KWTX-FM (97.5) in 1970. The radio stations were sold to Gulf Star Communications in 1996 and are now owned by Clear Channel Communications. Mike Braun, KWTX-AM/FM, 1975-1979
BRENDAN GILL (1914-1997) Not a shred of evidence exists in favor of the idea that life is serious.
