ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

KERN CUTS COSTS DEEPLY To chop expenses; News Talk KERN-1180 in Bakersfield-Wasco-Greenacres, CA fires two longtime anchors plus severs its relationship with a popular talk show host. Brett Reckamp, director of AM programming, confirms on Friday, May 27, 2011 that news anchors Danielle Sullivan and Bill Curtis and former host Inga Barks are laid off effective this past Wednesday: It was just a straight-up economic issue. Working for the news department can be quite expensive. Reckamp says that KERN's news team is parent company American General Media's largest in its seven-station radio group. The layoffs bring KERN's news team down to six people, which includes two anchors, one producer, a show host and two anchor/reporters. Brett is also KERN's news Program Director: We're just doing more with less when it comes to doing news.

JOE MANNIX SUES CBS Mike Connors is the actor we fondly remember as detective Joe Mannix in CBS' long running TV series Mannix from four decades ago. The 85 year old Connors wants to find out where all of his royalty payments went. Can Joe Mannix really be 85 years old? Connors files a law suit on Thursday, May 19, 2011 against Paramount Pictures Corporation and CBS Television Studios in Los Angeles Superior Court. He claims breach of written contract, negligent misrepresentation and unfair business practices, among other charges. Mike alleges that they owe him royalties on DVDs and other products from the long running TV series. We fans avidly watch Mannix on our TV screens from 1967 to 1975. According to his law suit, Connors has an agreement that grants him 10% of the gross proceeds derived from the use of Mr. Connors' name and likeness in merchandising, subject to a 50% fee for the first four seasons, and 20 percent of the net profits from seasons five through eight. This appears to be a good case for detective Joe Mannix to solve.

JAYNE MANSFIELD'S CAR Country singer and actor Dwight Yoakam once again teams up with his 1996 movie drama Sling Blade co-star Billy Bob Thornton for another romp on the big screen. Dwight tells the San Luis Obispo Tribune: Billy wrote a new screenplay titled ‘Jayne Mansfield’s Car'. It’s supposed to star myself, Billy Bob and Dennis Quaid as three brothers in 1969 who are ex World War II vets wrestling with their own families and lives on a large cattle ranch in western Alabama. Billy Bob Thornton's Sling Blade brings him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 1996.

SAM LEE (Beverly Hills, CA) To: Sam Lee. From: Mary Ann. Subject: (Cousin) Linnie. Sam, the nursing home just called and said they were going to do a re-evaluation on Linnie and maybe not put him in Hospice after all. She said she didn't think he was near death but that he certainly wasn't improving. He is getting worse but some of the personnel there don't think he needs hospice just yet. I hope that means some good news. I know he will have to go on it eventually but maybe it can be put off for a while. maryann. Subject: Reply 1 to Linnie. Thanks for the update, Mary Ann. I have you both in my prayers. I will let Jim Rose and Scott Hodges know about this good news. Peace & Grace, Sam. The Zeitgeist Corporation (www.ZeitgeistCorp.org)

BILL LEGRAND (Waco, TX) Jim, It sounds like you arrived at KULF (790) at about the same time as I left. I worked there from Summer of 1970 (KTHT) until May of 1980. I was a jock at first working the 6PM til 9PM shift, following Hal McClain. Then I became Production Director in 1972 for a year. I went into sales in 1973 until I moved to KODA (FM 99.1) in 1980. The LeGrand you remember from Beaumont was my brother Joe. He went by Lee Grant on air. He also used that name at KENR (1070) and KNUZ (1230). It's funny that you did the (KULF) Oldies Show. Jim Heath started the show and when he left, I did it for about a year. I think that was about 1977. Except then it was on Sunday nights. Small world of radio!
