LACY AND I WISH YOU A HAPPY AND SAFE 4TH OF JULY!
ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
SHOTS FIRED AT TV NEWS VAN News happenings often place radio and TV reporters in harm's way. Have many tales about where the KBOX-1480 mobile news unit takes me on the streets of Dallas, TX in 1971 and 1972. But never experience any gun play while on duty. Not so for WCVB TV ABC CH5 reporter Kimberly Bookman in Boston, MA. Her news van is fired upon as she and a photographer finish up a story about a gunfight that happens earlier. According to the Boston Herald as the two pack up their gear after a report on the late newscast, they hear gunshots. Two bullets hit the WCVB TV van. Neither of them receive injuries. Police do not believe that they are the targets of the gunfire. Andrew Vrees, WCVB news director, issues a memo to staff that states police do recover the firearm which they believe is used in the shooting. The firearm is under investigation for fingerprints and DNA. Cops at the scene report that the gun they find on the street has fired at least nine shots.

BERMAN RETURNS TO TODAY SHOW On Wednesday morning, June 29, 2011 Matt Lauer announces on NBC TV's Today show: It is a pleasure–and we mean that–to welcome back our good friend, Len Berman. The veteran New York sportscaster contributes to the Today show for 20 years before his WNBC TV contract expires in 2009 and is not renewed. WNBC sends Berman packing in spring 2009 after 24 years with the station. Berman tells FishbowlNY I’m thrilled to reconnect with my good buddies Matt, Al, Ann, and Natalie on Today. A great crew on and off camera. It was always one of my highlights. From 1979 to 1982, while at WCBS TV, Berman creates Spanning the World. The series makes its return on Wednesday.

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#992) June 29, 2011 [Wednesday] It is with regret that I report to you the passing of Alex Price (Kissire). Alex passed away Monday, June 27th, just after midnight. He had been in hospice care. I worked with Alex at KROZ (92.3) in Tyler back in 81 and he was a really unique character and a great fellow. He had a career that included KLIF (1190) in Dallas during the 70's and over 30 years in Tyler radio. I had lost touch with Alex over the last several years, but he is one fellow that you don't forget. Jeff Cunningham, DC (www.zoesplaceclinic.com) / (www.myspace.com/drjeffcunningham)

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Subject: The Five Americans. Jim, Mike Rabon, former leader of the 60's Rock 'n' Roll group "The Five Americans" has written a new book called "High Strung". I'm sure many of your DJ readers played "I See The Light", "Western Union" or their other hits. The book deals with how the group got started, a crooked manager/record company owner, his lack-of-talent want-to-be-a-singer son, no royalties for the group, personal appearances, sex, drugs, groupies, but mostly with how Mike lived through a life of fame, alcohol, and drugs. The book is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and www.thefiveamericans.com where you can also see old videos of the group. Just thought you might want to pass this along someday when you have some extra space in the letter. Thanks, Bud

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#991) June 27, 2011 [Monday] Hi Jim! Just responding to a couple of posts on the last JRRR. Comedian (and now rap artist) Jamie Foxx was indeed from Terrell, TX. In fact, the city's Bradshaw Street has been co-named "Jamie Foxx Way," and the commemorative red street sign there also has a football helmet insignia with the number "12" on it, to celebrate Foxx's athletic contributions to Terrell High School (where he was known under his real name, Eric Bishop.) Jamie Foxx Way is just off Moore St/Hwy 80, not far from the old KTER studios.
BLAKE LINDSAY (Dallas-Addison, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#990) June 24, 2011 [Friday] Hi Jim, I sure enjoyed your tribute to Glen Campbell. I enjoy his music very much, and like what you have to say about him. Hope you and Lacy are doing fantastic! Your Friend, Blazin’ Blake still live and awake! (www.blazinblake.com)

Musical numbers are by Rudy Vallee, Bing Crosby (on film), Frank Sinatra (on film), Eddie Fisher, Marian Anderson, Ethel Merman and Mary Martin. Lowell Thomas appears in a piece about old-time radio. The program features a look back at the history of the United States and the world up to 1953. Also featured is archive footage of Charles Chaplin, Winston Churchill, Greta Garbo, John Gilbert and Al Jolson. In person are Wally Cox, Kukla and Ollie, Burr Tilstrom's puppets and others. Henry Ford II closes out the program with a hope for peace and prosperity in the future.
CASEY JAMES (Houston, TX) Subject: Texas radio hall of Fame. I just sent in my votes to the Radio hall of fame for Chuck Buell, Jim Rose of KULF (790) legend and I sure encourage others to do the same. The smooth golden throats of Jim Rose, Chuck Buell, Jim Tate, Roger ST John and the only radio station that had its own night club in The Central Bank building should never be forgotten, God bless, Casey James Putnam
GILBERT K. CHESTERTON (May 29, 1874 – June 14, 1936) The present condition of fame is merely fashion.
