ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

CLASSIC TV WRITER BIDS HIS LAST FAREWELL Veteran TV writer Sherwood Schwartz who creates two of our most favorite TV shows dies at 94 on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. Sherwood brings to our TV screens Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch which become instant Classics. Neither show pleases the critics. What do they know? After their initial network runs, these two popular shows appear on our TV screens for decades in syndication. They become a part of pop culture like no other TV series. Schwartz says that he dreams up Gilligan's Island in 1964 as a kind of take off on Robinson Crusoe about seven travelers whose small boat comes apart in a storm and maroons them on a deserted Pacific island. Gilligan's Island airs on CBS TV from 1964-67. It spawns three highly-rated TV movies. From 1974-77, a children's cartoon, The New Adventures of Gilligan, appears on ABC TV. In 2004, Schwartz contributes to the production of TBS' reality TV show The Real Gilligan's Island.

AMERICA AWAITS RADIO LEGEND'S DECISION On its 32nd anniversary, Chicago, IL radio listeners remember Steve Dahl's Disco Demolition on July 12, 1979. Steve's fantastic marketing event marks the end of the disco era. Guess news travels slow down south because we DJs on Houston, TX's KULF-790 still have to labor with the likes of Amil Stewart's Knock on Wood, the Bee Gees' Staying Alive and Donna Summer's Hot Stuff. Chicago radio legend Steve Dahl says that the CBS Radio contract that he has to sit out expires on Friday, July 9, 2011. Dahl will proclaim his future plans on Monday, July 11 at 12:00 central time. America sits still. Beginning Monday, August 1, 2011 Steve Dahl's radio fans can gain exclusive access to DahlCast for a monthly fee. The popular podcast, receives over 7.5 million downloads since its launch in September 2009. On August 1st it evolves into a subscription-based service where devoted Dahl fans can hear their favorite radio personality unregulated and uncensored for a monthly fee of $9.95. Can you dig it baby? Former Tribune CEO Randy Michaels buys three radio stations from Emmis; two of which are in Chicago while one is in NYC. Rumors fly about Steve Dahl returning to WLUP FM (97.9). Stay tuned to this Bat dial.

BOB MILLER (Detroit-Plymouth, MI) Jim, We must have crossed each other on the way in/out! I don't really remember much about the people there (KBUC FM San Antonio). I was working at KVOU (1400) in Uvalde (TX) in late 1965 and filed a story about a flood with WFAA (820/570 Dallas). They called me up for an interview but I was 1A in the draft and couldn't type at the time. Both are now, thankfully resolved! While in San Antonio, I was also a booth announcer at KONO-TV. It switched to KSAT while I was there. It was at that time I was also a cameraman for Tom Ellis who regularly files his thoughts on your website. There was one jock I recall at KBUC. His name was Geoff Britt. Bob

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo, TX) Subject: Obit. Jim: I'm sure you've heard of passing of Rob Grill @ 67 on 7/11. He was lead-singer of The Grass Roots who had 14 top-hits 1966-1972. My favorite of them all was "Let's Live For Today" peaking @#8 in 1967. Grill reportedly suffered a fall & brain injury about a month ago. Ironically, he lost his son, Christian, a drummer for group Villains died on 8/11/10 & the drummer, Rick Coonce, of The Grass Roots died in Canada earlier this year, 2/25/11. Bob & Sonny Lee

IRA [Eye] LIPSON [Dallas, TX] Subject: Hall of Fame. I’m honored to be voted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame joining such talented peers. Although I had wonderful experiences programming WFAA and consulting the startup of The Ticket, my fondest memories are from creating The ZOO and guiding the menagerie for its first 5 wonderful years. VICKY PICKERING [John dies on Monday, 02/28/11] (Houston, TX) Subject: High school reunion...PRICELESS!! That is a great video. My high school - Lubbock High School Class of '55 (Buddy Holly and several musicians, girlfriends, etc.) is having a reunion in Kerrville this month and over 100 of us are going to see "Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story". We all went to high school with Buddy. The show is at the Point Theater in Ingram, TX. This is probably the biggest crowd of LHS Class of '55 grads to see the show at one time. I took family to see the "Buddy" musical at UpStage Theatre in the Heights last week. It is a good production of the show. It is on weekends through July. Really miss ole John. Especially over the weekend when I saw the musical and Sunday at church when he was remembered in a service for the Deacons. Talk about memories - over 58 years. JIM GOUGH [Mr. Texas-actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#996) July 08, 2011 [Friday] Hey Jim..."Cactus" Pryor's real name is Richard! JG

TRIVIA ANSWER: The name of the boat on Gilligan's Island the S.S. Minnow comes from early 1960s FCC chief, Newton Minow. Newton becomes famous for his proclamation that television is a vast wasteland. Minow takes the attention that his comment draws in good stride. He brags that he has a friendly correspondence with Gilligan's Island's creator Sherwood Schwartz. Gilligan's Island's main characters include: The S.S. Minnow's Skipper (Alan Hale, Jr.), Gilligan (Bob Denver), the Professor (Russell Johnson), Mary Ann (Dawn Wells), Ginger Grant (Tina Louise), Thurston Howell, III (Jim Backus) and his wife Mrs. Howell (Natalie Schafer). Hans Conried appears in one episode as fighter pilot from World War I, Wrongway Feldman, who gets stuck on the island when he tries to fly around the world in the Spirit of the Bronx. We remember Bob Denver as Dobie Gillis' best friend, beatnik Maynard G. Krebs. Maynard says that the G stands for Walter. Though he is most famous for his role as Thurston Howell III on Gilligan's Island we also fondly remember Jim Backus as the movie voice of Mr. Magoo.

MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#996) July 08, 2011 [Friday] Hey, Jim...I hope all is well with you and Lacy. In regards to the song "Mother-in-law". Years ago, my mother-in-law was visiting us, and I told her I had a song I wanted to play for her. Yep...she sat through the entire song. My wife informed me that it wasn't very funny. My mother-in-law got back, years later, though. Her husband, youngest daughter, and she were living with us, while they were searching for a new place, after selling their home. Everyday, when I was leaving for work, my mother-in-law would sing "Hallelujah! Thine the Glory, Hallelujah! Amen..."(from the hymn "Revive Us Again"). But...I got the last laugh. When they were moving from our house into their new home, I got out my Ray Charles tape and played this one..."Hit the Road Jack". That's a true story. She's 80 now, and has a great sense of humor. We still, from time to time, joke about that. Try to stay cool, and give Lacy a pat on the head for me. And though I don't express this enough...thank you very much for JRRR. Mike

ERNIE K-DOE [Ernest Kador, Jr.] (February 22, 1936 - July 5, 2001) Satan should be her name. To me they're 'bout the same. Every time I open my mouth. She steps in, tries to put me out. How could she stoop so low? Mother in Law...Mother In Law. Mother in Law...Mother In Law.
