ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

1960S POP SINGER SUCCUMBS Gene McDaniels, who charts several Top 10 hits in the early 1960's passes away at 76 on Friday, July 29, 2011. From 1961-62, we hear Gene's hit tunes on the radio from morning to night. These evergreens still sound great: A Hundred Pounds of Clay (#3-1961), Tower of Strength (#5-1961), Chip Chip (#10-1962) and Point of No Return (#21-1962). Gene is born on February 12, 1935 in Kansas City, KS. He grows up in Omaha, NB. His father is a minister. In Gene's early life he listens to Gospel music by the Swan Silvertones and Soul Stirrers. He sings in choirs and attends the Omaha Conservatory of Music. In the early 1950s, at 11 he forms his own group. Gene appears in the musical comedy movie Ring-A-Ding Rhythm that releases on March 30, 1962. Recording artists who are present in the film include Acker Bilk, Chubby Checker, Del Shannon, Gary US Bonds, Gene Vincent and Gene McDaniels. His professional debut is with the Mississippi Piney Woods Singers who tour the west coast performing in Jazz clubs. Liberty Records signs him to a contract. The legendary Snuff Garrett is his producer. He writes songs for others like Roberta Flack's Feel Like Makin' Love (#1-1974). His last effort is a series of YouTube videos.

PLAY MISTY FOR ME Do you remember the 1971 Clint Eastwood movie, Play Misty for Me, where he is a DJ on a Jazz radio station in Carmel, CA? A female listener in a seductive voice asks him to play misty for me. Eventually they meet and disaster strikes Eastwood because the woman is totally insane. From 1978-81 I have a similar situation with a female listener here in Houston, TX who falls in love with my voice. Wherever I move she manages to show up. Well, the same radio station in the movie where Clint spins Jazz LPs KRML-1410 (Jazz by the Sea) in Carmel, CA is up for sale for $350K. A national organization wants to buy the radio station and flip its format to Country. But Clint's friend, Scot McKay, purchases KRML at a greatly reduced price of only $150K, plus he will keep the Jazz format. Eastwood is overjoyed, I am very excited Scot McKay has bought KRML and will keep it going. Carmel deserves to have this wonderful station that will continue to feature great music. Clint Eastwood is a former Republican mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. He owns the inn Mission Ranch in Carmel.

Also remember Max Gardner at KKYX in San Antonio. I use to visit Bill Mack at WBAP and so many other great stations in Texas in the '60s & 70s. JIM BELL [KUFH FM 88.7 Retired 1997-2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: In Defense of Patty Shieh. Hey Jim, The First Commandment of TV news. Reporters must never EVER use foul language anywhere near a live microphone. It's clear from that YouTube clip that her story was pre-recorded, which means there are two people to blame for that "no-no" word getting on the air.  Shieh shouldn't have said it, and she is responsible, but let the person among us who has never said words just like it -- or worse -- after blowing a "take" cast the first stone. The person I also blame is the newsroom tape editor who should have caught that "re-take" and edited out the offending language. Did that person also get fired?  I doubt it. At the same time, when someone gets fired for a minor offense like this one, it usually turns out that it was just the straw that broke the camel's back. People rarely get fired for just one offense. KEN DOWE (Dallas, TX) Good stuff, Jim. I'd first heard Russ Knight on KLIF (1190) in 1961 (just after Dottie and I eloped) and I was driving from Alabama to San Diego. I was barely 20 and she was barely 17. I left Dottie in Mobile until I could gather enough money to get rent an apartment in San Diego when I was hired as the new morning man for KDEO (690) [now XETRA-690 Tijuana, Baja California] after a very short stint as their night guy. I'd never been west of the Mississippi River and when I got near Dallas, the first song I ever heard on KLIF was THE BRISTOL STOMP. Russ was playing it. With that in my ears and the Dallas skyline in my eyes I promised myself that one day I'd make it back to Dallas. Maybe...even to "Big Klif."

JEFF MCCLAIN (Houston-Cleveland-TX) Got to tell you quick story about Ken Dowe. Way back during the summer of 1964 I had talked my folks into letting me attend Elkins Institute 1st Class License course in Dallas. KLIF (1190) and KBOX (1480) were the big Top 40 guns in town. Naturally at 16 my radio was locked on 1190 and 1480 in Dallas. I think Ken was the KLIF PD at the time. I called him on the phone one afternoon and ask if I could come and visit the studio. He didn’t hesitate, gave me an invite and when I got there gave me the grand tour. When we got to the control room, Jimmy Rabbit was on the air. It was late in the day, as I remember after 6 PM. Ken left me in the control room for a few minutes with Jimmy while he really put on a show for me and the radio audience. I was all eyes and ears. Those were the great days of Top 40 radio. I was totally impressed. Ken was very kind to a 16 year old kid beginning his career in radio. I’ll never forget it. First impressions last a life time. I tried to remember that as I traveled on to KULF, KENR, WNOE, KNUZ and many others.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Gunsmoke debuts on CBS TV on September 10, 1955 and runs until September 1, 1975 for 635 episodes that makes it the longest-running prime-time drama series. The Gunsmoke CBS Radio series begins in 1952 with radio voice actor William Conrad as Marshall Matt Dillon of Dodge City, KS. Conrad stars as a detective in the TV series Cannon from 1971–1976 and Nero Wolfe in 1981. On TV, James Arness is Marshall Matt Dillon, Amanda Blake plays Miss Kitty, Milburn Stone is Doc Adams, Ken Curtis is Festus Hagen, and Dennis Weaver is Deputy Chester who walks with a limp. Burt Reynolds as blacksmith Quint Asper goes on to become a huge movie star as Bandit in Smokey and the Bandit. In 1956, Charles Bronson plays killer Crego in Gunsmoke. We all remember Charles in his Death Wish movies. Originally, Gunsmoke almost doesn't happen because James Arness is under contract to John Wayne's production company. He nearly turns down the role but John Wayne pushes him into accepting it. Recently, on Friday, June 3, 2011 the 6'7" tall James Arness passes away at 88.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo, TX) Subject: Gene McDaniels. Obit. Hello Jim: Soon as I can run down my source on Earl Carroll, I'll notify Joe Goins, your reader in Bronx. Thx... Just got report of death of singer, songwriter, Gene McDaniels. (Eugene Booker McDaniel) @ 76 on July 29, 2011. His major hits were: "A Hundred Pounds of Clay", "Tower of Strength" and "Chip Chip," all top ten hits in 1961 & 1962. Bob & Sonny Lee

JOHN GILLING (May 29, 1912 – November 22, 1984) Death is an incident producing clay. Use it, mold it, learn from it.
