ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

STORM TROOPERS GET TOO CLOSE TO THE ACTION Radio and TV news hounds rush to the scene to be the first to cover hurricane Irene's storm damage and almost tsunami like tides but some of them get too close to the action. In NYC, Christine Sloane of WCBS TV CBS CH2 gives an account of the stormy beach at Asbury Park around 7 Sunday morning, August 28, 2011 but a huge wave comes mighty close to where she stands. She leaps out of harm's way. Lou Young WCBS TV journalist talks about the scary scene of a parking lot that floods. All of a sudden, waves hop over the boardwalk. Young shouts above the wind, I think it’s time to wrap this up and pull back a little bit. Chris Wragge does somewhat better in the WCBS TV Mobile 2 vehicle when he interviews a local resident who refuses to leave Belmar, NJ. WNBC TV pokes fun at the Weather Channel's Al Roker who ties himself to a boardwalk bench with a rope in Long Beach, NY. Big Al points out how a lifeguard building, along with its foundation, moves 10-15 feet. In Long Branch, NJ WNYW TV Fox CH5 reporter John Huddy talks about a bride and groom who brave the storm to hold their wedding. Lyle Schulze, GM of WCTI TV ABC CH12 Greenville, NC sighs: Power is out in 95% of the viewing area and New Bern took a direct hit from the storm. We survived the storm and we never left the air. There’s plenty of damage, but we can report that today, all is well.

IRENE BRINGS OUT THE RADIO IN US While much of Providence, RI is powerless, due to hurricane Irene, radio comes to the rescue as TV broadcasts are down. On Monday, August 29, 2011 WJAR TV NBC CH10's News at Noon's audio shines brightly in a simulcast on WHJJ-920 for residents who have battery-operated or wind-up radios. For those who still have access to the Internet, the newscast also streams live on www.turnto10.com. Local broadcast stations rely heavily on Internet chatter boxes to aid in storm coverage. Media General's WJAR TV psyches up viewers to post questions, information, comments and photos on Facebook. In the wee hours of August 28th WNCT TV CBS CH12 has a prime vantage point for Irene's arrival at its headquarters in Greenville, NC. WNCT TV posts video clips from Facebook users because it cannot air live shots.

HURRICANE PROVIDES NEW HOOD ORNAMENT As Hurricane Irene rumbles across Petersburg, VA it places a tree on the hood of Salem Radio News Network Chief Engineer Dave Terry's truck. Dave opens the front door of his home to see a large portion of a tree hump parked on the hood of his truck by way of Hurricane Irene. Have no fear because according to Tom Tradup Salem VP of News and Talk Programming, the SRN News staff conducts a Good Night Irene bake sale to help pay for the damages to Terry's truck.

DERRILL HOLLY [KIKK FM] (Washington, DC/Arlington, VA) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1014) August 19, 2011 [Friday] Jim, I remember that the P-D (KIKK FM) that replaced Chris Collier was Bob Young (the guy constantly blinked his eyes and had the personality of road kill. He shuffled a lot of us around very quickly and then did not last out the autumn before they brought Bill Figenshu in from WMZQ to fix a lot of problems and set us on a competitive track. I’ll check this with the Mrs. and if a trip to Houston for November can be in the cards...just maybe!

JOE GRACEY [KOKE FM, KNOW-1490, KXOL-1360, KUT FM] (Austin, TX/France) Hi Jim, Hope all is well with you and your cute doggie. We have a golden, Lily, that we are doting idiots over. I think she is in the feature photos in fact. Kimmie (Rhodes) is not only a wonderful partner but a great platinum award winning songwriter and performer. She has a big following in Europe and the UK where we tour twice a year, thus the need for the house in France we can use as our home base there. I'm 3 weeks away from a respite and I am headed for France fast as I can go. Please see the blog below... Joe (www.kimmierhodes.com) / (www.lucktexas.com) / (http://graceyland.blogspot.com/)

JOANNE BUSSELL [KLDE FM, Mix 96.5, Atlanta's Z93 and V103] (Houston, TX) Subject: I agree with Ray Whitworth's comments on radio and the way it sounds today. This impersonal way that our so very personal, personable medium is treated is precisely the reason why Gen X, Y, and Z has turned to their iPods, iTunes, and YouTube. It's because that today there is no "you or I" on the airwaves. If they'd bring back real people, real warmth of the personalities as we were, music beyond the "overplay list" and the Top 200 we'd have an on-air product that people of all ages could love and everyone would enjoy. Live, local, fun, and spontaneous. That's the way it used to be and it worked. When the big boys go broke and we buy up the stations? Now that's what I'm talking about. This is why many major market talents are going to work in small markets as Dan Mason of CBS suggested that I do. They hire you for your knowledge of what works, how to do it, and they turn you loose with your talent. Not a bad idea. I just might do that very thing. I wanna rock and yes, I shall.

STEVE EBERHART [KVIL FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: KGAF in Gainesville. Hey Jim, My experience in small market radio tells me that we also must target not only hometown listeners but hometown clients as well. If the clients don't listen or cannot relate to the station at all, your chance at selling them is greatly reduced. If they are a fan of the station, it's usually a breeze. I also have found that much of what is expected in a smaller market such as the "good old boy network" isn't as much a factor as expected. Many of the long term businesses have been handed down to a younger generation or sold off to a younger group. The people running these businesses are quite often better educated and more progressive in their thinking. It is important to understand who you are trying to sell to as much as it is anything else. In a smaller market, your target must be not only listeners, but clients as well. If anyone would like to check us out, we stream at www.memories1580.com. Steve Eberhart, owner/operator KGAF "Memories 1580" Gainesville, TX (www.klifhistory.com)

LARRY SCOTT [KWKH-1130, KVOO-1170, KLAC-570, KBOX-1480] (Dallas-Terrell, TX) Subject: Irene. While doing the all night show at KWKH I would get calls, occasionally, from a lady in Marshall, TX telling me about something interesting concerning that area. After playing “Good Night Irene” one time she called to tell me the black lady that Leadbelly wrote the song about and for was actually his niece and was still alive and living in Marshall. She sent me a newspaper article to back up her story. In fact, she said she knew Irene. I wish a thousand times I had gone to Marshall and met Irene. Larry

TRIVIA ANSWER: During the Dukes of Hazzard's six year run from 1979–1985, Denver Pyle (Uncle Jesse Duke), Sorrell Booke (Boss Hogg) are the only two cast members who appear in all 146 episodes.

BLAKE LINDSAY [KLUV FM] (Dallas-Addison, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1017) August 26, 2011 [Friday] Hi Jim!  Just returned from Austin. Huge turnout at our ACB convention. I saw my friend Stephen Curr who has worked afternoon’s at Magic-95.5 for eleven years running. He is also totally blind and about fifty. I’m trying to secure transportation to Houston. I absolutely will come by and shake your hand, and chat it up a little bit Jim. Talk with you soon.

GROUCHO MARX (October 02, 1890 - August 19, 1977) Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you have to do is live long enough.

Jim Rose and Lacy
Houston, Texas Laus Deo
