ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

COUNTRY MUSIC'S BRIGHT STAR DIMS The Wright family produces several music icons. On October 30, 1937 Johnny Wright and 18-year-old Muriel Deason tie the knot of matrimony. Johnny really likes to hear his teenage bride sing and play the guitar. He gives her the stage name Kitty Wells. Johnny also presents her biggest hit record It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels. As an innovator, he gives Kitty Wells headline status on package shows. This is when female singers do not receive top billing. As a band leader, Wright hires the young Chet Atkins as a fiddle player. Chet goes on to head RCA records as one of the finest guitar players in America. Johnny Wright and Jack Anglin team up as Johnny and Jack with new wave Latin beat Country duo hits Ashes of Love, Poison Love (#4-1951) and (Oh Baby Mine) I Get So Lonely (#1 for 2 weeks in 1954). From 1951 to 1962, Johnny and Jack have 15 Top 20 singles. From 1948-52 Johnny and Jack are regulars on the Louisiana Hayride. In 1952 they join the Grand Ole Opry. Unfortunately, on March 7, 1963 Jack dies in a car crash at 46. Ironically, he is on the way to Patsy Cline's memorial service. As a solo artist, in 1965, Johnny's single Hello Vietnam is #1 for 3 weeks. Johnny and Kitty's offspring also have hit records. Daughter, Ruby's Dern Ya answer song to Roger Miller's Dang Me reaches #13 in 1964. Son, Bobby has a string of chart records that tops off with Here I Go Again at #13 in 1971. Johnny and Kitty's marriage lasts more than 73 years. In 1995, they bring fiddler Eddie Stubbs to Music City to perform with them. Stubbs becomes a well-known air personality on WSM-650 as well as a Grand Ole Opry announcer. In 2009, at Wells’ 90th birthday party, Stubbs relates: There are celebrity marriages that don’t even last 72 days now. This is possibly the longest celebrity marriage in history. Country legend Johnny Wright dies at 97 on Tuesday morning, September 27, 2011 in his home in Madison, TN.

A.T. & T. AND ME Around 2:45 on Wednesday morning, September 28, 2011 the search mechanism on this computer ceases to function. The ISP is DOA. That's why Friday's issue of JRRR doesn't make its way to you. Give Ma Bell, which now is A.T. & T., a call. A female clerk says that Mr. Fixit will knock on our door sometime after 8am the next day which is Thursday. That morning I whip out the vacuum cleaner. The long cord gets tangled around my right foot. Give it a massive kick to try to unravel the line. Then, I fall backwards and smash the upper rear of my head on Lacy's huge steel cage. Hemoglobin pours down both sides of my face. Grab a small towel in the latrine. Place it on the top of my hemorrhaging crown. This finally stops the red river's flow. Faster than a speeding bullet I land at Memorial hospital's ER. The surgeon says they no longer stitch stitches on big lacerations such as mine. They now use staples. The good doctor shoots six staples on the top of my head. On Friday morning near the 5 o'clock hour I switch on the PC. Glory be! We now have access to the Internet for the first time in three days.

JIM PREWITT [Catfish] (Sacramento, CA) Subject: For those of you who think radio is dead...read on... Number Won!!! Arbitron's Radio Today 2011 report is out, and it's full of good news about the Country format, which ranked No. 1 in Fall 2010 with a 13.3 share, compared to a 13.4 the previous year. Country also was No. 1 overall in both diary metros (14.5%) and non-metro areas (with a whopping 25.6%), and is No. 4 in PPM markets. The format reached more than 65 million listeners each week on more than 1,700 stations, the most of any music format (excluding 300 Classic Country stations). It also ranked No. 1 among most age groups including a big lead with adults 25-54 (with a 12.7% share), and in most dayparts. Country delivers some of the longest TSL of all formats, and its listeners set a new high in college degree attainment. Country leans 52% female, and is No. 2 among teens and adults 18-24. The report offers a "heat index" of states where Country is particularly strong, as well as other interesting details here. TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: For those of you who think radio is dead...read on... My only question is this: How can a company like Arbitron involved in radio be trusted to give an objective view and accurate information...about radio? To me, it's sort of like "Automobile" magazine accepting $50,000 in advertising from Ford and afterward the magazine reviews Ford's F150 or a Mustang. Do you simply accept it at face value? Not me. Tony

DAVID HOUSE (Fort Worth-North Richland Hills, TX) Subject: U.S. Newspapers "dropping ombudsmen left and right". Hi, Jim, I'm saddened by the loss of so many "ombuddies," as we were called. And I'm saddened by editors' comments regarding the role. They confine the role to such a narrow involvement with readers when, in fact, we dealt with a full range of reader issues, which can involve everything from accusations of bias in news coverage to questions about unlabeled advertorial content, complaints about products purchased from Parade magazine advertisers, wrinkled copies of the paper, too much ink, marketing issues, etc. -- basically the full range of a publishing company's operations and how they can impact readers. Takes, and took, a lot of time to track down answers for readers and help them understand what was going on. Doing so helped every department of the newspaper, too. It kept everyone more reader-aware. Take good care and thanks for all you do. Your newsletter is super. TRIVIA ANSWER: CBS TV's Fall 1965 series premier lineup includes Hogan's Heroes (September 17, 1965 - July 4, 1971), Green Acres (September 15, 1965 - September 7, 1971), The Wild, Wild West (September 17, 1965 - September 7, 1970), Lost in Space (September 15, 1965 - September 11, 1968), My Three Sons (September, 1965 - August 1972), and The Smothers Brothers Show (September 17, 1965 - September 9, 1966).

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Subject: Wikipedia Writes: Declining ratings in all of daytime television, combined with the departures of longtime actors such as Ray MacDonnell, David Canary, and Julia Barr, as well as the deaths of senior cast members Ruth Warrick, Eileen Herlie, and James Mitchell, had the ABC network reconsidering its schedule. On April 14, 2011, it was announced that All My Children would be canceled after 41 years on the air. On July 7, 2011, ABC sold the licensing rights of All My Children to third-party production company Prospect Park with the show set to continue on the internet as a series of webisodes and possibly on cable television. All My Children taped its final scenes for ABC on August 30, 2011 and its last episode on the network aired on September 23, 2011. It is unknown when exactly Prospect Park will air its first episode of All My Children, but the company hopes to revive the series for the first quarter of 2012. On September 26, 2011, ABC will replace All My Children with a new talk show called The Chew. Leslie Wayne Hodges

LYMAN FRANK BAUM (1856-1919) No matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful...There is no place like home.
