HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

THE GOSPEL TAKES A HIT IN HOUSTON, TX Radio One does an about-face from Gospel music on KROI FM (92.1) in The Bayou City to an all-News format on November 14, 2011. Leading the charge in Morning Drive is 27-year Houston radio duo and Texas Radio Hall of Fame honorees J.P. Pritchard and Lana Hughes. J.P. is a top notch radio news bull dog. He arrives here in Houston in 1979 when both of us are on KULF-790. There's quite a lineup of local Houston radio and TV personalities who fill the bill on the new FM talk radio station: Mike Barajas, Scott Braddock, Carolyn Campbell, Kevin Charles, Brent Clanton, Lanny Griffith, Laurie Kendrick, Martha Martinez, Bonnie Petrie, Matt Sampsell, Pattie Shieh, Meteorologist Dr. Joe Sobel, Craig Roberts and Jorge Vargas. Veteran journalist Denise Bishop is News Director. Houston-based Shane Media founder and president Ed Shane is the one who brings it all together as project manager. Shane brags: We’re going to give people the facts without the biased opinions that dominate so-called news stations. We’ve assembled an A-list of broadcast journalists whose mission is to report the news and let people make up their own minds.

CLEAR CHANNEL SLASHES RADIO Even after it ditches over 200 radio stations, Clear Channel Radio is still America's most gargantuan radio group with 850 stations clinging to its vine. CCR's recent meeting in Chicago, IL brings out another couple of bright ideas. The first brilliant brainstorm is to nationalize all of the programming of its small and medium markets. We all know what that means. CCR eliminates its local Program & Music Directors. This makes Bernie Madoff look like Snow White. CCR's second scheme is to immediately subterfuge other employee positions in its Herculean cost-slashing maneuver. On Wednesday & Thursday hundreds of CCR employees all across America bite the dust. In Chicago alone these cost cuts eliminate two Clear Channel employee positions. After four years of service, Metro Traffic reporter Allen Green is gone. Just two weeks ago, Dan Hammill, Metro Traffic sales, receives a promotion along with a new title. Next comes a pale pink slip that includes directions to the back door.

LARRY KING DOESN'T FEEL HIS AGE Radio and TV legend and CNN icon Larry King tells Bill Moran of PodJockey.com that he doesn’t feel his age and he has no intention of retiring anytime in the near future. Larry reveals this while on camera during the recent Los Angeles Regional Talkers Forum breakfast on October 20, 2011 just a few moments before he delivers its opening speech. King says that in addition to the four TV specials per year for three years that is in his  CNN contract, he is about to return to doing a Los Angeles-based national radio show plus the launch of yet another TV project within several days or weeks.

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: Oak Ridge Boys. Doesn't matter how or where ORB got the song Elvira, main thing is they got it. Song loved by all regardless of age. Made one feel good when hearing it. No one else could have made such a hit out of it unless maybe the Statlers. Have to think about that. They made money on it and I spent money on it. Not as much as they made. Put Elvira on and I could clean house by the time it had played ten times. I moved fast to the beat. Might get off of this thing now and play it again.

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1042) October 28, 2011 [Friday] hey Jim; do not say where you heard this but I have a good friend whose wife is a Cox exec and the whole Lysle and Hahn thing was a payroll cut, what else. They were simply making too much money...a guy from Tulsa will be one of the replacements and he is supposedly a real hot shot in the AM...Have we heard that before...supposedly he took his station’s ratings from an 8 to a 28...who do you believe these days..Take care and keep us informed...the sick world of today’s radio.  GD (www.garydnews.com)
