ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
AND THE ORIGINAL HOST OF 'TRUCE OR CONSEQUENCES' IS In 1929, Ralph Edwards begins his radio announcing career as a teenager and continues for more than seven decades. In 1940, Ralph Edwards creates, hosts and produces Truth or Consequences. It becomes radio's #1 audience participation show that airs for 38 consecutive years. In 1950, Truth or Consequences debuts on TV with Ralph Edwards as host. The show is so popular that in 1950, residents of Hot Springs, NM vote to rename their small resort town Truth or Consequences. In 1956, Edwards hires Bob Barker as host of the show, which he hosts for 18 years. Barker, who watches Edwards when he hosts the show, remembers: I stole things from him I still use. I think he's one of the finest hosts who ever worked. Barker adds that Edwards is a most unusual man, in that, in addition to being so talented as a host, producer and writer, he was adored by everyone who worked for him. Truth or Consequences is the first TV show recorded on 35-millimeter film before a live audience on a regular basis. His three-camera, live-on-film system is later used on I Love Lucy which debuts in 1951. The system is still used on TV sitcoms to this very day. As a producer, he is responsible for thousands of hours of radio and TV programming. Over the years, he produces more than 20 TV shows. Perhaps my favorite of his TV shows is him as the genial, smiling host of This Is Your Life. Many well-known celebrities who sit on the sofa are very surprised as Ralph unfolds their life stories along with the voices of long-lost friends and relatives. When they join Edwards and his guest on stage, it brings tears to their eyes. In 2001, he receives the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences lifetime achievement award. The 92 year old Ralph Edwards passes away on Wednesday, November 16, 2005.

REGIS GOES OUT WITH A RATINGS BOOM In the 1950s Regis Francis Xavier Philbin is a page at The Tonight Show. In 1962, he becomes the announcer on The Tonight Show. A favorite Philbin show of mine is when he co-hosts a night talk show with comedian Joey Bishop on ABC TV from 1967–1969 to go up against Johnny Carson's Tonight Show on NBC TV. In the mid-’80s, Regis co-hosts The Morning Show in NYC first with Cyndy Garvey, then Ann Abernathy. In June 1985, Kathie Lee Gifford (then Johnson) replaces Abernathy. In September 1988 Live with Regis and Kathie Lee goes national. In 2000, Gifford exits. The show becomes Live with Regis. In 2001, Kelly Ripa is the show's new co-host in Live with Regis and Kelly. In 2001, Philbin wins a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host. In 2008, Philbin's contract with ABC renews through to 2011 for more than $21 million. After more than 28 years, 80 year old Regis Philbin’s last day as co-host of Live with Regis and Kelly is November 18, 2011.

ROBERT REYES [Bobby] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Happy Thanksgiving! Hey there Jim...here’s hoping you and Lacy are having a fantastic Thanksgiving! I wanted to add to your trivia question and answer feature about The Price Is Right! I remember watching T.P.I.R. in the early 1960’s on NBC with the jovial, crew-cut haired, bespectacled, ultra friendly face of longtime announcer and multi game show host and game show participant, Bill Cullen! his announcer was one of the true veteran voices for NBC, and present day announcer for Saturday Night Live, Don Pardo...NBC’s presentation of The Price Is Right had to have been done in the infamous Studio 8 H because it was one of many game shows NBC broadcasted in color! I remember the NBC Peacock intro beginning each broadcast...since 8 H is such a huge studio, it could accommodate the large array of prizes to be bid upon...then, I think T.P.I.R. wound up going to ABC but it did not last long there because of the fact that ABC did not have full color capabilities...but as we all know, the show went to Bob Barker and CBS in Los Angeles, in full color, and the rest is history! I hope you had a great birthday and truly hope your Christmas will be wonderful!! take care and we will get back to you “ laters“!! Bobby Reyes
JIM BELL [KUFH FM 88.7 Retired 1997-2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Price is Right. Hey Jim, You're right about Bob Barker's long career, but your info on The Price is Right missed the mark by 16 years. The Price is Right began on NBC in 1956 with the great Bill Cullen as the host. It ran out of gas in 1965 and was off the air till 1972, when ABC brought it back with a new host, Bob Barker. That reincarnation was originally called The NEW Price is Right, but over time they dropped the word "New". So to answer your question "Do you remember when you first see The Price Is Right on TV?", yes I do. It was 1956, I was 13 years old, living in Pasadena (TX) and spending entirely too much time watching those daytime TV game shows. As you reported, Bob Barker got his start on Truth or Consequences in 1956, but do you remember who he replaced on that show? Who was the original host of T or C? Jim Bell Retired in East Texas

JOANIE GREEN-GALLO (Tulsa, OK) Subject: Bee Gees Memory. Jim, I am sorry to see the news about (Robin) Gibb. Many prayers and well wishes for comfort go to him and his family. This does remind me of a difficult time being on the air and playing Bee Gees music... At the time when the Bee Gees had so many hits in the top ten it was a logistic programming and playing nightmare. Formatting dictated that you couldn't play a song by the same artist/group within an hour of each other, yet we had "Hot Clocks" that would force you to insert a top ten hit every 40 minutes or so when the timer went off. Most of the Top Ten at that time was filled with Bee Gees songs...so when the Hot Clock went off, one inserted a Bee Gees high rotation hit in right after playing a Bee Gees tune from regular rotation...but you couldn't play them close together, yet the Hot Clock went off...well, I think you get the idea... Whew! Those formatting requirements gave new meaning to the phrase, "Stayin' Alive"! Happy Thanksgiving to you and Lacy! Joanie
MAURICE GIBB passes away on January 12, 2003. Maurice's twin brother Robin is the Bee Gee who has a diagnosis of liver cancer which we pray that he is completely healed. Teen idol Andy Gibb youngest of the five Gibb cubs dies on Thursday, March 10, 1988 just five days past his 30th birthday.
KEN DOWE (Dallas, TX) Have a great Thanksgiving, Jim. And, keep up the fine work you're doing. You're an important fellow for lots of folks. Blessings, Ken
CHUCK DUNAWAY (Houston, TX) The power of a thankful heart. Happy Thanksgiving from us to you. Chuck and Kendall

BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have an awesome day!
DAFFY DUCK [Warner Brothers, Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies] I'm Amazing! Marvelous! Stupendous! Colossal! Tremendous! Gigantic! Astounding! Unbelievable! Spectacular! Phenomenal! And good, too.
