ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
AUSSIE TV HOST TELLS ALL ABOUT GREEN ROOMS Australian TV presenter Richard Wilkins is born Richard Stephen Wilkins on June 19, 1954 in Auckland, New Zealand. At seven, he is classically trained as a violinist. He graduates from New Zealand's teacher's college with majors in English and Music. PolyGram signs Richard Wilde as he is then known to a worldwide contract. He becomes one of New Zealand's top Pop stars. In 1980, his band Wilde and Reckless heads to Australia to release singles plus a six track EP and tours with Grace Jones. He becomes Promotions and Marketing Manager of Sydney radio stations 2Day FM and 2UW (now Mix 106.5). In 1987, Richard is the first VJ on MTV Australia when it is a TV show not a channel. In 1992, he hosts Keynotes TV game show. In 2011, Richard Wilkins' New Holland Publishers book Black Ties, Red Carpets, Green Rooms is Australia's biggest selling book. In a recent statement Richard glows: I never expected all this. Writing the book was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m thrilled and relieved that people seem to be enjoying it. In 2012, Richard Wilkins celebrates 25 years on Australian TV. From 1994 to the present, he is the Nine Network Entertainment Editor and appears regularly on The Today Show. In 2012, his book Black Ties, Red Carpets, Green Rooms releases as a must read paperback.

RECORDING ARTISTS MAKE MINIMUM WAGE In 2011, The Daily Swarm publishes a very revealing list of music industry statistics. For instance, do you know that in order for a solo artist in the USA to earn the minimum wage of $1,160 per month they must sell 12,399 tracks on iTunes? As a group, that figure divides by the number of members in the band. Recording artists make their biggest money from concerts. The Daily Swarm spills the beans: ...a 77% decline in debut album sales since 2003 and with that a 17% decline in employed musicians. Only 17% of the global online community downloads music legally. With the shutting of record stores in the USA, now 27.4% of all albums sold are digital. Only 16.5% of Internet users in the USA purchase digital music. People are three times more likely to stream music than download it. Solo artists need to sell 1,299 albums on iTunes or 1,161 CDs at retail per month to make a minimum wage. They would need to have 4,053,110 plays on Spotify; 1,546,667 plays on Last.fm or 849,817 plays on Rhapsody to earn that minimum wage. Anu Kirk, MOG executive, reveals at the Digital Music Forum West: This is a tough business to be in. It sucks that right now artists are getting paid so little money by subscription services, but it sucks that artists are getting paid so little money by everyone. Kirk says: Lady Gaga earns only $167 from more than 1 million plays of 'Poker Face' on Spotify.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Do you remember when Kojak has its debut on TV? The answer appears below.

Thank you for all your continued support and we hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! James & Dorothy Best
JIM BELL [KUFH FM 88.7 Retired 1997-2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Merry Christmas to All! From Jim Bell, now blissfully retired in God's Country -- East Texas. I just want everybody to know that I got my Christmas a few days early. Back on Thursday, the 22nd, my cancer doctor at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston told me he doesn't think I have prostate cancer. Furthermore, he said the small town urologist who told me I DO have it misread the biopsy results, and I need to stop going to him. I will stop, because MD Anderson is the gold standard in cancer diagnosis and treatment. The Houston doctor told me to come back a year from now for a follow-up, but he's confident that I have nothing worth losing sleep over. Do you have any idea how this took a load off me and made me feel a hundred pounds lighter? I know, I don't LOOK a hundred pounds lighter, but it feels like it. So God's blessings and the happiest of Christmases, Hanukahs and whatevers to all my old Houston and east Texas radio friends and colleagues, and may all your days be as good and uplifting as mine was last Thursday.
DAVID HOUSE (Fort Worth-North Richland Hills, TX) Hi, Jim, Thanks so much for replying. I came across your website this afternoon and thought perhaps you would know Bob Sullivan and how to contact him. Probably reporter's luck. I was in the newspaper business for many years (Dallas Morning News, Denver Post, St. Pete Times, etc.) and even though I grew up during the '50s around (Louisiana) Hayride people and various artists because of my mother's career, I never learned that business, so I'm exploring unfamiliar territory. Your site looked strong and credible. Best, David House; Freelance Writer (www.fortworthwriter.com) Member: SPJ, Native American Journalists Association, Online News Association
