LACY AND I WISH YOU A HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR!

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

TOP NEWS STORIES OF 2011 The year 2011 brings us many huge and surprising stories that either invigorate or frustrate us. What do you believe is the biggest news story of 2011? Which 2011 news story upsets you the most? Do you have a favorite radio personality or a best-liked radio station? According to several news sources these are some of their top news stories of 2011. Probably at the top of the list is the takedown of bearded mass murderer Osama Bin Laden from his hideaway in Pakistan. Certainly, the Japanese earthquake and its tsunami that causes a nuclear disaster are near the pinnacle. How about the killing of Libya's iron-fisted ruler, Moammar Khadafy, after his brutal 42-year reign? Rebels who want to destroy the despot capture him cowering inside a sewer pipe in his hometown of Sirte. Then, there's the tragic story of three-term Congresswoman from Arizona, Gabrielle Giffords, who a lone gunman shoots her point blank outside a Tucson supermarket. Six people die in the confrontation but thank God, Giffords survives a bullet wound to the head. Which 2011 news story upsets you the most? Please let us know what you believe is the biggest news story of 2011 at Rosekkj@earthlink.net.

LA TV WEATHERMAN HAS HISSY FIT Veteran weatherman Henry DiCarlo of KTLA TV CW CH5 Los Angeles, CA has a hissy fit and storms off camera. Henry is upset because KTLA TV producers saddle the weather cowboy with a quick interview along with his weather prognostication. DiCarlo complains that interview cuts his weather forecast time short. He pants, When you send a weatherman out to do the weather but you’re also sending him out to do a story, you might want to give him a little extra time. Co-anchor Chris Schauble jeers, Maybe we'll give him a little cheese to go with that whine. The incident brings notoriety. DiCarlo posts in his Web page: 20 years in the business and it takes a meltdown on live TV to make today's AOL homepage! I should have done this years ago.

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: "Crash" of Tyler and DFW radio perishes in Christmas Day house fire. FYI...Thanks to former DFW radio pro David Faulkner for pointing me to this. Crash (real name: Allen McGee/Harrison) was doing middays at KZPS "Lone Star 92.5" in DFW until 2007 when they blew out most of the staff. He was working at 96X in Tyler at the time of his death. He was living in nearby Kilgore. Link from KYTX-TV/Ch 19 via Tyler Morning Telegraph: www.tylerpaper.com/article/20111226/NEWS01/111229870 Remembrances are being posted on friend and former Clear Channel co-worker Cindy Scull's Facebook page. (www.knus99.com/)

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: "Crash" (Ex KZPS) Dies in House Fire. Jim, Wanted to pass this on to you. http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=203804.0 The link is to the Radio-Info posting by Mike Shannon. Best, David Faulkner

BEST AND WORST NEWS STORIES OF 2011 The year 2011 brings us many huge and surprising stories that either invigorate or frustrate us. What do you believe is the biggest news story of 2011? Which 2011 news story upsets you the most? Do you have a favorite radio personality or best-liked radio station? Please let us know at Rosekkj@earthlink.net.

TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Murrow. Jim, Hi. Yes, I was alive when "Person to Person" began, but I doubt I enjoyed it much -- I was only one. Born in 1952. One of the highest rated "Person to Person" shows was the interview with Marilyn Monroe. I have seen many of the tapes. UT has some of Mike Wallace's old interview show from the late 1950s which was on ABC. Today, it is sort of odd to see Wallace doing live commercials for Phillip Morse and smoking nearly non-stop on the show. The guest is often framed in extreme close-up.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Subject: Barry Kaye KILT (610) Houston Air Check now in Mason, Texas Live Mornings. Jim, click and listen. This is Barry Kaye then on KILT. You have heard this air check be4. But it's like a milk chocolate cookie you gotta have more. Barry and I have worked together over the years in his band in Houston, staying at my place in Brady {in the center of Texas South east of San Angelo} during two hunting seasons, and before that Aggie 96 in College Station Texas. Barry is now on air in the Mason, Texas Control Room 6 A.M to 9 A.M. KHLB. What is listed on the search page. That may change as another Houston personality Barry Kilgore began doing afternoon drive on KHLB October 3rd. Barry Kaye prefers 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. I miss this kind of radio here from KILT The Big 610 in Houston This was AM radio man. Wonder why we do not have this type of personality radio today? Leslie Wayne Hodges

TRIVIA ANSWER: Do you know that out of all of Santa's reindeer, Rudolph with the red nose is first known as Rollo? It all begins way back in the 1930s when Montgomery Ward decides to have their Santa give away coloring books. M-W copywriter Robert L. May receives the assignment to write the book. His story is about a little reindeer by the name of Rollo who is made fun of and left out of group activities because of a physical abnormality. Along with Rollo, other names like Rodney, Reginald and Romeo are also under consideration. M-W executives do not like any of those as the reindeer's name. So, Robert May changes its name to Rudolph and gets a friend to draw funny sketches of the reindeer making merry at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo. M-W execs dig it. During Christmas 1939, M-W hands out the first copies of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer coloring book. May's brother-in-law Johnny Marks pens a tune based on the story of the red-nosed reindeer. What really brings things together is in 1949 when Superstar Cowboy singer Gene Autry's Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer becomes a smash hit.

MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Subject: WFAA promo. Jim, I was going through some boxes of pictures and found this. It was in the Dallas Morning News on Tuesday, May 21, 1968. I remember everybody except John Darrell. Maybe he did weekends. I started there in March, 1967 doing Weekends and production Tuesday through Friday, then moved to 4-7 until I went on vacation that summer and Charlie (Van) replaced me with a guy who had just started, Lee Douglas? I went to all night and finally 7-12 until I moved to KPRC here Labor Day weekend of 1969. Always enjoy the newsletter. Have a great New Year. Mike Marshall

PORTER WAGONER (August 12, 1927 - October 28, 2007) I've enjoyed as much of this as I can stand.
