LACY AND I WISH YOU A HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR!
ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
CHEETAH IS DEAD! We fans of the early Tarzan motion pictures fondly remember his scene-stealing chimp sidekick Cheetah who is one of Hollywood's best-known animal actors. Cheetah is one of several chimpanzees to appear alongside former Olympic Gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan. Maureen O'Sullivan is Jane. Johnny Sheffield appears as Boy in eight Tarzan films. Cheetah's film tenure in Tarzan is from 1932 to 1934. Cheetah lives at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, FL well past the average chimp lifespan of 35 years to an estimated 80. Cheetah suffers from kidney failure and passes away on Christmas Eve 2011. Rene Lynch of the Los Angeles Times sighs: Cheetah the Chimp lived an awfully charmed life including chauffeured car rides, piano playing and much love and affection. Cheetah loves people's laughter and was known for his ability to stand up straight and walk like his human co-stars. Debbie Cobb, Sanctuary outreach director, tells The Tampa Tribune that Cheetah ...liked finger-painting and playing football. He was very compassionate. He could tell if I was having a good day or a bad day. He was always trying to get me to laugh if he thought I was having a bad day. He was very in tune to human feelings.

BBC RECEIVES TWO BLACK EYES British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) public service scribe receives two black eyes on its facade. The first knock out punch happens after BBC’s online Magazine chooses its annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year from an entirely male rolodex. A rumpus arises amongst British media's petticoat junction. But when BBC includes the face of female panda bear Tian Tian as part of its list of 12 female faces of the year it sets the Twitter line on fire. Female panda bear Tian Tian, also known as Sweetie, arrives at Edinburgh Zoo in December 2011 from China. John Prescott, former deputy prime minister, Tweets: So the BBC couldn't find a woman for Sports Personality of the Year, but they could find a panda for a female face of 2011. Stella Creasy, Labour MP, scoffs: No offence to Sweetie - sure a lovely panda and best in the class etc - but clue is in the title 'women' not 'female of the species' of the year.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Where does R&B singer/guitar player Bo Diddley come up with his stage name? The answer appears below.

KEVIN CHARLES [MINATREA] (Houston, TX) Jim, I do remember KMOO 1510 from when I was growing up in Mineola. In fact my brother Ron got his first radio job there while he was a sophomore or junior in high school. He was half of the "Double O Duo" afternoon show geared toward the kids in town... (even though he way not old enough to legally operate the transmitter. They were in a building like you described, but I think they had a real tower, not just a fence... It was owned at the time by Sam Curry...he ran it along with his wife Joyce for many years... My brother went on to learn engineering there and at KEEE and KEFM (now KJCS) in Nacogdoches. He also did engineering at KEBE KOOI Jacksonville and KDOK Tyler before going to work for Motorola. I got my start at KJCS in Nac in 78 with a little encouragement from my brother. I stayed there for the next 8 years...then moved to KLTR 93.7 in Houston... Then I landed at KLDE and was there off and on full and part time until recently. Kevin - By the way my brother was at KMOO around 1970-72 I think. There is now an FM in Mineola using the same calls.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Bo Diddley is born Ellas Otha Bates on December 30, 1928 in McComb, MS. His adoptive name Ellas McDaniel is from his mother's cousin, Gussie McDaniel. Ellas gets his nickname Bo Diddley from a one string African guitar (the diddley bow) that he plays with a metal slide like in a dobro. He studies violin at his Baptist Church in Chicago and plays his trademark rectangular guitar in South Side clubs. In 1955, Bo records for Chess/Checker records. His first record Bo Diddley/I'm a Man lands at #1 on the R&B chart. As a Rock and Roll vocalist, guitarist, song writer and inventor his signature pounding beat guitar and jive talk influences many legendary recording artists such as Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds and Eric Clapton. In 1987, Bo inducts into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He receives Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation plus a Grammy from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Bo Diddley dies at 79 in Archer, FL on June 2, 2008.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, If you were in town I would treat you to R. J. Cuisine Mexican Restaurant at the West End. I find it a great place to fellowship. Especially for some one who would enjoy talking to another about Radio, plus other subjects. As an amateur radio operator, I have found that it is better to let others talk, since what I need to know can be better learned. I have been practicing Morse code, it is obsolete but still is fun. I read the book Due To Circumstances Beyond Our Control, the same year I read the autobiography of Sammy Davis Jr., Chet Huntley, and the host of the Today Show who later did a news program on ABC. 73 Charles, KC5RAI
YOGI BERRA (May 12, 1925 - p) All the great jazz players alive today are dead except for the ones dying to be like the ones that are dead.
