ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELVIS PRESLEY! On January 8, 1935 Elvis Aron Presley is born in Tupelo, MS. He becomes the undisputed King of Rock and Roll. Elvis Presley's 45 rpm and LP records in my stash present many hours of enjoyment. Thanks to WFAA-570 and KVIL FM Dallas, TX Oldies expert friend from the 1960s, Bud Buschardt, for replacing three turntables that movers wreck with a wonderful Technics platter so that I can once again spin some Elvis the Pelvis tunes. An Elvis Presley fan posts on You Tube: Elvis Presley remains the greatest singer, entertainer, who ever lived. In addition to being the most successful recording artist, Gospel artist, all time Concert SELL OUT record holder for eight years straight, most successful musical act (ratings) ever to appear on TV, and was the ONLY actor whose every movie made a financial profit. Even these 34 years after his death he STILL outsells 99.9% of any other 'artist'. August 16, 1977 lives on in infamy because on that eventful day I'm on 1-10 on the way west to Houston, TX as a new DJ on KIKK FM. As I motor along on the 1-10 TX autobahn try to pull in Houston radio signals, believe that I hear that Elvis Presley has died. No! That cannot be true! But it is. At midnight on Elvis' birthday January 8, 2012 meet at the gates of Graceland in Memphis, TN to join fans from around the world to sing favorite Elvis Presley Gospel tunes and of course, Happy Birthday to Elvis!

CHICAGO RINGS IN ELVIS FEST Dick Biondi, WLS FM Radio Hall of Fame member, rings in Elvis Fest in Chicago, IL once again to salute the King of Rock & Roll on Sunday, January 8, 2012 which is Elvis Presley's 77th birthday. Biondi is the emcee of the annual Elvis Fest event, plus he broadcasts live on WLS FM from 7:00pm-11:00pm at the 12th Annual Elvis Fest. Even though The King is gone for over 34 years (Elvis dies on August 16, 1977 at only 42), fans still celebrate Elvis' birthday every year. Elvis Fest night features Elvis Presley tribute artists from the Elvis Entertainers Network live on stage. You can also wear your Elvis costume to take part in the Elvis-look-alike contest. Winner receives a trip for two to Las Vegas, NV. There's a free buffet that includes Elvis Presley's favorite snack food, peanut butter and banana sandwiches. A large Elvis birthday cake for everyone to share. Dick Biondi fires up The King's birthday cake candles. Biondi leads the singing with Happy Birthday to Elvis Presley. This is the 12th annual Elvis Fest at the Original Mother's, 26 W. Division Street in Chicago. Doors open at 7:00pm for the party. No cover charge to attend, however, Mothers' suggests a $5 donation to their preferred charity the New Orleans Musicians Clinic.

DAN MURPHY [Daniel] (Providence-Warwick, RI) Subject: Bo Diddley. My understanding of the diddley bow that inspired Bo Diddley's name is that it was a wire strung between two nails that was played with just about anything that could be used as a slide (bottles were often used). It was borne out of the poverty that most southern blacks lived with, and was the first instrument of many other noteworthy blues guitarists (B.B. King comes to mind). I've never seen Bo Diddley's real name listed as anything except Elias McDaniel, with E. most often used as his middle initial. Where I saw his name most often was as a songwriter, most often on his songs he recorded. This could all be attributed to something as simple as assuming a stepfather's name (if Bo D. had one), frequently done in the time he was born. DAN MURPHY
THE DIDDLEY BOW originates in Ghana, Africa. Low income southern blacks in America use a rectangular-shaped cigar box with two nails, a long piece of wood, a bungee cord and a soda pop bottle to fabricate diddley bow guitars. Bo Diddley plays the diddley bow with a metal slide like in a Dobro. He amplifies his rig to get all kinds of different loud sounds. He gets the idea for his square-shaped guitar from the diddley bow cigar box. His stage name Bo Diddley comes from his playing of the diddley bow guitar.
TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Cheetah. Gee, I had no idea Cheetah was still alive until a few days ago, or that a chimp could possibly live that long. Cheetah outlasted Johnny Weissmuller (one of many Tarzans) by 27 years and Johnny Weissmuller Jr., who also had a brief film career, by about five years. Clean living ... I guess.
ON AUGUST 16, 2011 we receive an email from an Elvis Presley admirer way up north but not as far as Alaska who reminds us that the King of Rock and Roll dies on that date in 1977.
CHRISTINA L. TSIARKEZOS (Wilmington, DE/Elkton, MD) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio. Just noticed you didn't mention that Elvis died today 8/16 in 1977. P.S. I am in the state of Delaware -- pretty far from Texas.

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: Debi Diaz & All Staff @ 92.1 KTFW. Jim, Don't know any details, but, per Debi Diaz Facebook page, she & all at 92.1 KTFW (Ft. Worth) were let go today. Best, David Faulkner
TRIVIA ANSWER: Dolores Hart (Susan Jessup) plants Elvis Presley's (Deke Rivers) first on-screen kiss in the 1957 movie Loving You. In 1963, at 24, Dolores Hart walks away from Hollywood stardom to become a nun in rural Bethlehem, CN. Mother Dolores prays for a Christmas miracle to save the Abbey of Regina Laudis where she lives as a cloistered nun. The abbey which is a former brass factory that houses Mother Dolores Hart and about 40 other nuns in the little town of Bethlehem, CN needs $4 million dollars in renovations to meet fire and safety codes. Many of the older nuns can no longer navigate the narrow steps to the main building's third floor and must live in another building. Without adequate fire escapes, the monastery catches the eye of local inspectors. The self-supporting nuns launch a New Horizons fundraiser for the renovation project. Mother Dolores says This work may not be in my lifetime, but we're sure trying. The budget is about $2 million for fire code and accessibility compliance plus another $2 million for improvements to the housing and other facilities. You can send your Tax-deductible donations to New Horizons, Abbey of Regina Laudis, 73 Flanders Road, Bethlehem, CT, 06751. What a wonderful way to start the new year!
JOE FORD (Houston-Shenandoah, TX) Hi Jim, Just a quick note to wish you and Lacy a superb New Year! Keep your fingers crossed...this one HAS to be the best, otherwise...well, let's just leave it at that! Joe (http://joefordvoiceworks.com)
JIM GOUGH [Mr. Texas-actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1059) December 26, 2011 [Monday] Well Jim I heard from my old friend Arch Yancey yesterday. He said he's finally retired from radio. He'd been listening to me narrating a Louis L'Amour story on Sirius Radio. Keep you feet dry! Jim Gough
ELVIS PRESLEY (January 8, 1935 - August 16, 1977) And now, the end is near; And so I face the final curtain. My friend, I’ll say it clear, I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain. I’ve lived a life that’s full. I’ve traveled each and ev’ry highway; And more, much more than this, I did it my way.
