ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

DARTH VADER'S SABER FALLS In 1922, Robert James Gilbert Anderson is born in Hampshire, southern England. During five decades as a sword master, fight director and stunt performer, Bob Anderson works with motion picture legends from Errol Flynn to Antonio Banderas. In 2 of the 3 original Star Wars films, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Bob dons Darth Vader's black helmet to fight light saber battles. Former weightlifter David Prowse plays six foot six Darth Vader, but Anderson steps in during key fight scenes. Bob's former assistant, Leon Hill, proclaims: David Prowse wasn't very good with a sword and Bob couldn't get him to do the moves. Fortunately Bob could just don the costume and do it himself. Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, reveals in a 1983 interview with Starlog magazine: Bob Anderson was the man who actually did Vader's fighting. It was always supposed to be a secret, but I finally told (director) George (Lucas) I didn't think it was fair any more. Bob worked so bloody hard that he deserves some recognition. It's ridiculous to preserve the myth that it's all done by one man. Other roles include the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Mask of Zorro and sword-fighting stunts in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Olympic fencer and movie sword-fight master, Bob Anderson, dies at 89 early New Year's Day 2012 in an English hospital in West Sussex, England.

RADICAL GROUP BANS BUCHANAN FROM MSNBC A liberal group apparently succeeds in its efforts to persuade MSNBC to drop conservative commentator Pat Buchanan from its shows. The Daily Caller reports: Color of Change announces that the cable network has confirmed that Buchanan has been suspended indefinitely. Since October 2011, the group pushes the envelope for Buchanan's ouster. Phil Griffin, MSNBC President, confirms that Buchanan is suspended indefinitely. Rashad Robinson, Executive Director, said in a statement: ColorOfChange.org welcomes MSNBC's decision to indefinitely suspend Pat Buchanan. The group launches several campaigns against conservatives that include advertising boycotts against Glenn Beck.

FRIDAY THE 13TH IS HERE Many times radio and TV stations and businesses feature Friday the 13th as a special day for big sales and sometimes special events. We do not have Friday the 13th very often. Superstitions about Friday the 13th are that it's a day of good or bad luck. The fear of Friday the 13th has a name, paraskavedekatriaphobia, that comes from the Greek words Paraskeví which means Friday, dekatreís stands for thirteen and phobía symbolizes fear. This is a form of triskaidekaphobia which is a simple phobia (fear) of the number thirteen also known as friggatriskaidekaphobia. Sounds like a bunch of big words on a teleprompter that the president might use to tantalize his cult followers. Most of us believe that Friday the 13th is just a day for us to look forward to an enjoyable weekend. Lacy and I hope that you have a safe, successful and wonderful Friday the 13th.

JEFF THOMPSON (Greensboro-Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: Elvis's Birth and Death. January 8th and August 16th always ring strongly in my mind, dates of Elvis Presley's birth and death. That's because, the day he passed away, I broke the bulletin on NBC Radio Network News that afternoon. First, told America about his sudden death, then I did a report to the BBC. Then I prepared a tribute, which for most famous people are already written...just missing date, age and cause of death. But Elvis' passing was a total surprise to everyone! So with the help of my NBC Colleague, Norm M. Nite's book, "Rock On", I was able to quickly cobble together a fitting obituary tribute. After airing that report, as I walked out of the studio, I was met by my producer with an airline ticket in his hand, saying "Jeff, you're going to Memphis". Jeff Thompson, formerly of KXYZ (1320) Houston, & KASE (FM 100.7) Austin: builder of KMSC [Manned Spacecraft Center] (FM 102.1) [now KMJQ FM] Clear Lake and Anchorman/Reporter at NBC Network News, WINS (1010), and WOR-TV in New York City.
