ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
ANARCHY ERUPTS ON MOTOWN TV A reign of terror pours forth outside a Detroit, MI courthouse on Saturday afternoon, January 21, 2012 when a woman darts out waving a WXYZ TV ABC CH 7 tripod as a weapon. After cops charge a 35-year-old man on murder charges, the families of the victim and the defendant meet eyeball-to-eyeball outside the courthouse. Things heat up rapidly between the two groups. A female ally of the defendant grabs a WXYZ TV tripod from the sidewalk. She slams the tripod to the ground and rips off one of its legs and waves it around like a jousting Knight of the Round Table. The inflamed woman heaves the tripod over her head as she circles the group. According to WXYZ TV the enraged woman screams: Stand back cameraman, because I’m going to kill these [expletive]! The arm of the law seizes the woman, rips away her lance missile and all's quiet on the western front.

PHILLY RADIO HOST PUNCHES CAB DRIVER Philly.com reports that 31 year old Tom Byrne Philadelphia, PA area evening talk co-host on Sports WPEN FM (The Fanatic 97.5) Burlington, NJ leaves a cab without paying the $5 cab fee. Cabbie says that when he follows Byrne to collect the $5 fee the talk host grabbed his glasses, punched him in the face. According to WPEN FM, Tom is off the air for the time being. Byrne's day in court is on February 3, 2012. Greater Media's reaction: Tom deeply regrets his behavior on Sunday night. He extends his sincere apology to the cab driver and make amends if possible. Tom will be taking a leave of absence and we support him in those efforts. Tom’s broadcasting career begins as the voice of the Scranton Royals play-by-play of his college’s basketball team. After graduation, he returns to the Philly area on WBCB-1490 Levittown. Tom has a daily Phonebet TV show and writes for The Sports Network. In April 2008, he goes full-time on ESPN WPEN-950 as the morning drive update anchor and weekend host. Next, he moves to nights as host of his own show.
COUNTRY LEGEND PERFORMS LAST TOUR The news that doctors diagnose one of our favorite singers, Country music legend Glen Campbell, with Alzheimer's disease shocks all of us. In June 2011, physicians pinpoint the 75-year-old Campbell with Alzheimer's. Before it seizes his memory, Glen decides to go on his final tour. As part of Glen's Goodbye Tour, on February 26, 2012 he performs a benefit concert at Thalia Mara Hall in downtown Jackson, MS with the proceeds going to assist the University of Mississippi Medical Center Alzheimer's disease research institute. Medical books tell us that Alzheimer's is a degenerative brain disease and type of dementia marked by memory loss, personality changes and diminished reasoning ability. There is no known cure or even an effective treatment for Alzheimer's. Our prayers are with Glen Campbell as he battles this mind sapping affliction.

JEFF THOMPSON (Greensboro-Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: Elvis's Birth and Death [arrival in Memphis, TN]. A few hours later, there I was, standing out in the rain with thousands of Elvis fans who had heard the news and just made a turn heading to Graceland Tennessee. The next 3 days were truly intense, reporting on Elvis's funeral, his body being placed in a vault not far from his mother's grave at the cemetery and a hit and run accident that night of his death in front of the mansion. By the way, I visited her grave, and Elvis did NOT die on the anniversary of her death as many report. Mrs. Presley passed on the 14th of August, not the 16th. By the way, however, his first recording success, "Heartbreak Hotel", hit # 1 on the charts in January, same month as his birth. Jeff Thompson, formerly of KXYZ (1320) Houston, & KASE (FM 100.7) Austin: builder of KMSC [Manned Spacecraft Center] (FM 102.1) [now KMJQ FM] Clear Lake and Anchorman/Reporter at NBC Network News, WINS (1010), and WOR-TV in New York City.
FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Subject: Ken Dowe. Well, they (Granny Emma & Ken Dowe) do live in Dallas (Highland Park) but they have a home in Santa Fe (NM) and one in Tyler (TX) on a lake some where. Have not seen that one, but we have been to the Dallas and Santa Fe digs. Ken is all retired now and traveling the world with his sweet wife Dottie. The ice cream was chocolate with sprinkles on it... See you. Frank

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1067) January 23, 2011 [Monday] Jim, Just lately, the news seems to be full with the passing of people I hugely respected. Etta James was, simply, the finest female singer I ever heard. I liked Dinah Washington, and Aretha was great too, but Etta James was in a class by herself. Johnny Otis is best known for Willie & the Hand Jive, but he was a great developer of r&b talent as well. Little Esther Phillips was just one of his finds. Richard Mock was one of the great newsmen and news anchors I ever heard. I listened to him on KLIF (1190) and KNUS-FM, and he served as a role model for me for nearly twenty two years of on-air news work. I guess if you hang around long enough, you have to start running out of people you respect...but it's sure making it harder to watch and read the news these days.
WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS POST IT IN JRRR! Don't delay! We want to hear from you. Send your radio tips and stories to Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.
JAY WEST (Houston, TX) Subject: Alan Shapiro. Caught the message to me from Alan Shapiro. Since he did not leave an email address...I would love to keep in touch with him. Sooooo, if he is reading your column today, please contact me at: jayweststudio@gmail.com. Thanks Jim, and thanks Alan. JAY WEST
JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: good morning. Laughed at Mike's (Shannon) "dressed to look professional." I thought it was because silly girls were always chasing you guys and you wanted to look good for them. Mike seems to be a caring person. He will go a long way in his field. Sorry to hear of Dick Mock's passing.
TRIVIA ANSWER: On July 3, 1974 CBS TV premiers its new variety program Tony Orlando and Dawn. The summer replacement for the Sonny & Cher Show runs through December 28, 1976. Pop music group Tony Orlando and Dawn is very popular in the 1970s. Their first big hit is Candida (#3-1970). In 1971, Knock Three Times not only hits #1 for 3 weeks but it also is the top song of 1971 with sales of over six million copies. In 1973, their most memorable hit is Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree. Tony Orlando and Dawn (Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson) become international sensations. Tony Orlando guests on Jerry's Labor Day Telethon for 25 years, nine of which as the New York host. Tony wins three American Music Awards and a People's Choice Award. In 1990 Orlando scores a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for outstanding achievements to the entertainment industry.
TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Jim, Hi. Years ago, my family also went to California but went through the desert in a non-A/C car -- about 1957 I believe. My dad said my face turned beet red. He swore when we returned to Oklahoma, he was going to get a car with air conditioning. Within a week, he had traded for a new Buick LeSabre (think that was the model) with huge fins on the back like a rocket and A/C vents in the back along the back windshield. Strange. Yes, my dad let me drive a little around town. Today, you'd probably get arrested. When I was 10, I got in my grandfather's old 1947 Plymouth and managed to put it in reverse. It rolled down the driveway into the middle of the street.
JESUS CHRIST [John 16:33b, NIV] In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
