PIRACY IS NEW RADIO Legendary Rock and Roller Neil Young works on next generation iPod with Apple founder Steve Jobs. He calls it a possible higher-definition music device. On Tuesday, February 1, 2012 the 66-year-old singer/songwriter who campaigns his higher-fidelity digital sound on stage at the D: Dive into Media technology conference says that a giant of the industry, the late Steve Jobs, is on his side. Young tells the conference that he speaks with Jobs about creating a format that has 20 times the fidelity of files in the most current digital formats, including MP3. Young says the Apple co-founder is such a fan of music that he doesn't use his iPod digitally compressed files at home: Steve Jobs was a pioneer of digital music. But when he went home, he listened to vinyl (albums). Neil Young says that piracy is the new radio. He says that fans illegally copy low-quality songs to sample music before they buy higher-quality versions.

JIM GOUGH [Mr. Texas-actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1069) January 30, 2011 [Monday] Jim...couldn't help but notice you were on the air at WBAP (WFAA) at one time. During 1995-6 I did "Texas USA" on KRLD every Saturday and Sunday night. First at the old station in Dallas and finally at the elaborate studios in the Ballpark at Arlington. I had never had such an experience! I too had listeners from many states that always called in. Got tons of fan mail. Got a call one night from North Dakota! Unless you've been on a 50,000 watt station..you ain’t lived! Best, Jim Gough www.jimgough.net

WFAA AND WBAP FAMOUS TIME SHARE ARRANGEMENT From 1967-68, I'm the 7pm-midnight DJ on WFAA-820. On Sundays the noon-6pm DJ on WFAA-570. That's when the pair WBAP and WFAA each own 50% of 50,000 watt clear channel 820 and 5000 watt 570 frequencies. Every 6 hours at 6am, noon, 6pm and midnight at 10 seconds before the hour each DJ gives a station break on one frequency and at 5 seconds before the hour we flip the switch to the other frequency and give an I.D. on that frequency. This is the only time in American radio that the FCC allows that to occur. On May 1, 1970, WBAP pays WFAA $3.5 million for their 50% share of 820 and 570 frequencies. MOR music WFAA-820 becomes News/Talk WBAP-820 and News/Talk WBAP-570 becomes MOR music WFAA-570. Later, WFAA-570 flips to News/Talk. Then, 50,000 watt clear channel WBAP-820 hires Bill Mack to do an all night Country radio show. It becomes so popular that in 1972, WBAP flips from all news to all Country and quickly becomes #1 in DFW because it covers such a huge area. In 1972 I move over from KBOX-1480 to the Mighty 11-90 KLIF-1190. Much later after KLIF abandons its famous 1190 frequency, WFAA-570 flips to Talk KLIF-570. KLIF-1190 becomes News KFXR-1190 (CNN 1190). So, at one time or another I'm on all four frequencies in Dallas, TX: 1480, 1190, 820 and 570. Those were the days my friend.

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: Issue 1069. Greetings! Jim & Lacy, Enjoyed the recollections of KLIF 1190 in Issue 1069. Ken Dowe, Charlie Van Dyke, Michael O' Shea, & Jim Rose, a few of the many legends from a legendary station. Spent much time listening to it when I was growing up. Best, David Faulkner

TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Gabe Kaplan. Gabe Kaplan, the teacher on "Welcome Back Kotter", also was a professional poker player.  He probably has won close to $1.5 million playing poker. He also has been a commentator on numerous professional poker championships. Kaplan will be 67 in March.

TRIVIA ANSWER: On January 15, 1978 the Dallas Cowboys defeat the Denver Broncos 27 to 10 in Super Bowl XII at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, LA. Dallas Cowboys head coach is the legendary Tom Landry. Roger Staubach quarterbacks Dallas. Former Cowboy Craig Morton is the Broncos' quarterback. Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier do the play-by-play. MVPs are Cowboys' Randy White [Defensive tackle] and Harvey Martin [Defensive end]. 76,400 fans watch the Halftime show that features the Tyler Junior College Apache Belles, Pete Fountain and Al Hirt. Super Bowl 30-second commercial costs $162,000. CBS TV has the largest audience ever to watch a sporting event. It is the highest-rated Super Bowl to date with 47.2 national household rating and 67 share.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Jim, What Follows a drought history has always shown is major flooding. In a meeting last night [Thursday evening January 19 2012} in The Harrison County Ag Office this drought is very very bad. If we go through another summer like 2011. Beaumont, TX will not have any water. What I was told last night by a CPA Mac Abney. Mac says the experts do not know what to make of this drought. Mac was involved a meeting on this drought situation. I'm looking for encouragement on what is to come. Might be we need to build an ark? Mac said my hair cut looks more like I work in the media last night. That made me smile. Leslie

MICHAEL MCCAUL (January 14, 1962 to p) Texas has been hit especially hard this year by a continuing drought, threatening high winds and increasingly destructive range fires. Simply, these conditions have lead to extremely adverse conditions in the agriculture industry.
