HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! YOU ARE CALLER NUMBER 2,014!

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

POP MUSIC DIVA DIES On Saturday, February 11, 2012 publicist Kristen Foster and Fox News confirm that singer Whitney Houston dies at 48. Beverly Hills Police Department Lt. Mark Rosen reports an emergency call at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday. He says hotel staff and fire department officials attempt to revive a person on the fourth floor, who they later admit is Whitney Houston. She is born into a musical family: Gospel singer Cissy Houston's daughter, Dionne Warwick's cousin and Aretha Franklin's goddaughter. Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy says: Six-time Grammy winner Whitney Houston was one of the world's greatest pop singers of all time. But by the end of her career, her album sales plummet. In 2009 Houston appears to have a revival when her album I Look to You debuts on the top of the charts and goes Platinum. But when she appears on Good Morning America to promote the album ABC News reports that her voice sounded ragged and off-key. Whitney Houston’s death comes on the eve of music’s biggest night, the 54th Grammy awards at the Staples Center.

BROADCASTERS AND ACTORS PROTEST SAG-AFTRA MERGER Screen Actors Guild (SAG), established in 1933, represents more than 125,000 working actors in film, television, commercials and other new media. For 70 years, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) represents 70,000 professional actors, journalists, announcers, disc jockeys and other performers. About 30 people stage a public protest against the proposed merger between SAG and AFTRA 3 weeks before the proposal reaches member mailboxes. Scott Pierce, former SAG board member who organizes the rally in front of their Los Angeles, CA HQ attests: The delegate system is a template for a pro-management union. Opponents object to the combining of SAG and AFTRA pension and health plans. Warren Berlinger of Union Democracy Now says: People are terrified that they're going to lose their pensions. To pass, it needs a 60% yes vote from each union. The ballots mail out to 120,000 SAG members and 70,000 AFTRA members on February 27, 2012. The tabulation date is March 30th.

Sister station Top 40 WPST FM in Trenton, NJ becomes Nassau's base of operations. In 1994, Nassau begins to acquire other radio stations which grow to 49 frequencies. The auction date is May 8th. Liquidation bids due May 1, 2012. Nassau owns and operates radio stations in Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, NJ, Pennsylvania and Vermont. EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

MIKE KELLAM (Denver-Estes Park, CO) Hi there, Jim! There are two versions of this e-mail address. The most correct is mjkellam@att.net. It was shortened when Yahoo took over ATT e-mail. We are buried in snow now and we are hoping to go to Texas soon for a getaway. I'll e-mail a bit more later today. I am still getting organized. Good to hear from you. Mike Kellam

FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Jacksonville-Lake Striker, TX) Subject: Thanks. Issue 1072. Thanks Jim for the birthday wishes, I've made it to 64 with I hope many more to come. A correction for you is that I'm now semi retired in East Texas instead of still running a church. My wife and I and our mini-dashound "Pudge" moved here in November of last year. It's nice to walk the dog at night and see all the stars clearly. I may get a telescope just to start doing some sky watching. I see you also have Larry Lujack's book "SuperJock" where your closing quote comes from. I have had the pleasure of meeting him on two occasions. Very nice and incredibly funny in person. My best to you and Lacy, Bob Tomlinson=

JOANIE GREEN-GALLO (Tulsa, OK) Jim, Ahhh! Here's one of my funny stories from my time at KNOK (FM 107.5). I was playing album cuts and just before the PD came in, I got a wild hair to go stand on my head (don't ask me whatever possessed me to do that...I had been doing a bit of yoga and had learned new stances and positions). So, I did the Sun Salutation and jazzed I could do that went on to the next thing...I stood on my head...and then couldn't get down. I kept hurting my back as I tried to get out of the position. The PD walked in, saw me, had a puzzled look on his face and I asked him to puh-leeeeeze help me get down...that I was stuck and couldn't move. He did. Thankfully, the album was about a minute from ending and I had the next cut already cued up so I just walked over to the board like nothing happened, did the segue, signed off, thanked the boss for his help, wished him a good day and left (with my thoroughly embarrassed tail between my legs). DOH! Does that count? Joanie

JERRY HEILMAN (Nacogdoches, TX) Subject: debut. Good morning to you! Hope your life is going well. Just to let you know that my show will debut Feb. 16th 2 to 6 p.m. on www.103thebull.com/ (KJCS FM Nacogdoches-Lufkin, TX). If you happen to listen, don't expect too much. My first adventure to computer operated radio. Should be interesting.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Saintly TV. I have a Panasonic TV that I bought in 1998 when moved into apartment at Skillman and Northwest Highway, now those apartments are the site of a Wal Mart, Sam’s, and J. C. Penney. I have it hooked up to a Magnavox CD/VCR with built in tuner...use an antenna from Radio Shack. I watch a few TV shows, but for the most part like radio better...also enjoy watching movies that I rent from Netflix, since they have movies that came to town but often did not stay around. I wonder sometimes about the critics they will pan a movie that I find better than the ones they exult so much about. Having renewed my interest in the banjo have subscribed to banjo-l. There was a mention of how players could use to get by with only knowing a few simple songs well... 73 Charles, KC5RAI

TRIVIA ANSWER: American radio and television writer Andrew Aitken [Andy] Rooney is born on January 14, 1919 in Albany, NY. On September 17, 1978 A Few Minutes With Andy Rooney becomes a regular segment of 60 Minutes on CBS TV. The legendary 60 Minutes commentator becomes very well-known to generations of American TV viewers with his homespun commentary. Andy Rooney is with CBS TV, first as a writer for Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, since 1949. He is a part of the 60 Minutes troop since 1978. On Sunday, October 2, 2011 Andy offers his final remarks on 60 Minutes which caps a career that spans more than six decades. Rooney sighs: This is a moment I have dreaded. I wish I could do this forever. But I can't. But I'm not retiring. Writers don't retire, and I'll always be a writer. The award-winning writer Andy Rooney passes away at 92 on November 4, 2011.

TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: editing. Forgot to mention...you do a great job editing. I don't remember ever seeing a typo. A journalism teacher once told me that the secret of writing was not in the writing, but editing.

NORMAN COUSINS [American political journalist] (June 24, 1915 – November 30, 1990) Words have to be crafted, not sprayed. They need to be fitted together with infinite care.
