BAYOU CITY TALK HOST CRASHES SUV AT GAY BAR A Houston, TX man tells police that conservative KTRH-740 talk host and former City Councilman Michael Berry rams his SUV into another vehicle outside T.C.'s Show Bar on Converse and Fairview in the Montrose on January 31, 2012. Bayou City beat cops view the bar's surveillance video to confirm that conservative talk host Michael Berry is inside the gay club around the time of the incident. Tuderia Bennett, whose car is damaged, is upset: Videos don't lie. I want my money more than anything else. Bennett tells cops that he can positively identify Michael Berry behind the wheel. Video shows talk show host Berry walking into the show bar...ordering a beer. Harris County DA's Office declines to file hit-and-run charges. The former Houston City Council member and KTRH-740 conservative talk show host states: I've always said when you do what I do, the way I do it, you make enemies. When you poke your finger in as many people's eyes as I do every day, you make enemies. Berry says that his critics will accuse you of most anything.

BOB MILLER (Detroit-Plymouth, MI) Subject: old radio guys. Hi Jim, Reading the great information you share regularly is a great way to get a front row seat to our shared history. Sometimes I feel for the guys who spent a lifetime on the air and never got a damn thing in return for their contributions. For many, the nature of the business was that owners didn't have to provide a lot of security or retirement for the men and women who paved the way. Fortunately for me I went back to school, earned the requisite degrees and am able to apply the lessons from radio to the classrooms today. I think it makes a difference when a professor can speak from experience and give a first-person glimpse into the real world of radio and how it all developed. So, for all you folks out there who have something to share, why not consider putting all the experience to good use in the classrooms. Nothing better prepares a student for a perfect GPA than 30 or 40 years of radio experience. It's surprising how much you learn from being in the business. All those years of teletype rip and read were also "rip and learn"! Bob Miller

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-Retired 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: More Dallas/Larry Hagman Trivia. Hey Jim, Jim Bell here. Your trivia item about the TV show Dallas reminds me of one of my favorite TV "back stories." In 1977, NBC was developing a sitcom about a washed up pro basketball player who ends up coaching a high school basketball team. The show was "The Waverly Wonders" and Larry Hagman was signed for the leading role. Early on, Hagman could see it was a rip-off of another series then in development, The White Shadow, and he lost confidence in it. He quickly bailed out to take a supporting role in a new prime-time soap opera about an oil-rich family in Texas. When “Dallas” went on the air in the fall of ‘78, it was built around Bobby Ewing and his new bride, Pam. Bobby's older brother JR was a supporting character. But, Patrick Duffy's bland portrayal of Bobby allowed Hagman's colorful portrayal of JR to take over, so JR quickly became the central character and the rest is history. Oh yes, The Waverly Wonders ended up with Joe Namath in the leading role, and it was an embarrassing disaster. It lasted only 9 episodes. Dallas lasted 13 seasons and became a cultural phenomenon. Tally ho from east Texas.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Subject: Double O Radio. I'm just following what is going on. Town Square Media is supposed to be taking Double O Radio in Midland. They have been since November looking for a Station Manager for Midland. Dale Harris in Lubbock with KFYO and the other Town Square Media Lubbock Stations has been overseeing Midland. Driving around and out of Midland this past weekend is interesting to hear no personalities between the songs. Though was impressed to hear Rick Dees on KODM Odessa Midland at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. Leslie
DOUBLE O RADIO's corporate headquarters are in Charleston, SC. Terry Bond is its chief executive officer. Double O Radio owns 28 radio stations in the U.S. On August 8, 2011, Double O merges with Townsquare Media and becomes part of the Oaktree Capital Management broadcast empire. The Panama City, FL and Columbia, SC clusters are not part of the deal. They continue to be held by Double O's parent company, Pilot Group. Double O TX radio stations include: KHKX FM (99.1) Odessa, KMCM FM (96.9) Odessa, KQRX FM (95.1) Midland, KELI FM (98.7) San Angelo, KKCN FM (103.1) Ballinger, KGKL-960 & KGKL FM (97.5) San Angelo and KNRX FM (96.5) Sterling City.
FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Jacksonville-Lake Striker, TX) Jim you tease us in your email of Dallas talk show host moving up to the Big Apple but then there's no mention in the news letter. Who is it? I hope it's not Mark Davis who is a fixture at WBAP. Oops! Oh I saw it was josh in Movers and Shakers, My Bad, Bob
TRIVIA ANSWER: On September 18, 1978 CBS TV series WKRP in Cincinnati premieres. Its 90 episodes run through September 20, 1982. The comedy series features the trials and tribulations of the staff of fictional radio station WKRP in Cincinnati, OH. WKRP stars Gary Sandy as PD Andy Travis, Gordon Jump ( GM Arthur Carlson), Loni Anderson (receptionist Jennifer Marlowe), Richard Sanders (newscaster Les Nessman), Frank Bonner (sales manager Herb Tarlek) and Howard Hesseman (morning drive DJ Dr. Johnny Fever). WKRP in Cincinnati characters are based on real people, including those that executive producer Hugh Wilson knows. The series wins a Humanitas Prize and receives 10 Emmy Award nominations, including three for Outstanding Comedy Series. In September 1979 the FCC assigns the call letters WKRP to a new daytime only AM radio station near Atlanta in Dallas, GA. MTM claims that it has a hold on the call letters. Therefore, the FCC denies the call letters to the new station. Radio station lawyers plead: MTM is neither a licensee, nor a permittee. Therefore, MTM has no legal basis to reserve the WKRP call sign. The FCC retracts and OKs the new call letters. In August 1989, Gospel WKRP-1500 flips to WDPC.
