ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST Motown Hard Rock quintet MC5 is a major influence on Punk Rock. MC5 stands for Motor City Five. MC5's flashing hot Rock single Kick Out the Jams that lands on Billboard in early 1969 knocks my socks off. Can you dig it baby? The band forms in 1964 with Rob Tyner (vocals), Fred [Sonic] Smith (guitar), Wayne Kramer (guitar) and Dennis Thompson (drums). In 1965, Michael Davis (bass) joins the group. Playing loud Rock music is hard on the heart. In 1980, Fred [Sonic] Smith marries Punk Rocker Patti Smith until he dies from a heart attack at 45 on November 4, 1994. Lead singer Rob Tyner passes from a heart attack at 46 on September 17, 1991. MC5 breaks up but reforms in 2004 as DKT-MC5 (DKT is Davis, Kramer, Thompson). In 2006, Davis founds the Music Is Revolution Foundation to support music education in public schools. On Friday, February 15, 2012 Michael Davis dies at 68 of liver disease at the Enloe Medical Center in Sacramento Valley's City of Roses, Chico, CA. Michael's survivors include wife Angela, three sons plus a daughter from a previous marriage.

MERLIN MEDIA's AXE SWINGS WIDE In spite of good news about the January 2012 ratings as Merlin Media News WIQI FM (101.1) slowly grows its Chicago, IL audience, bad bad Leroy Brown cuts loose three people due to restructuring. Industry vet Scott Miller, news anchor and reporter, exits on Monday, February 20, 2012. In 2000 & 2001, Scott Miller is the producer and co-host of Pete McMurray's show on WCKG FM. After that, he hosts a top rated Rock & Roll morning show on WTAO FM in Marion-Carbondale. Reporter and northwest suburbs bureau chief Annie Kelly also leaves the building on Monday. Another exit is actor, musician, voiceover artist and News writer Karen Gollrad. Merlin Media says that the cuts are not performance related, but are part of changes in WIQI FM's operating structure, including new technologies and programming directions.

BIONDI DOES STAGE In 1960, DJ Dick Biondi exits WEBR-970 in Buffalo, NY to move to the Windy City's new Top 40 radio station WLS-890. Dick soon becomes a radio legend on the powerful 50,000 watt clear-channel WLS-890. In later years, TX radio icon Charlie Van Dyke has a WLS-890 morning show. If you ever experience the power of a flame-thrower radio station as I have from 1967-68 on WFAA-820 in Dallas, TX you haven't lived. Cards, letters and telephone calls come in from far away places. The WLS call letters stand for World's Largest Store from its original owner Sears, Roebuck and Company. On February 8, 1963 Dick Biondi on WLS-890 is the first American DJ to spin a Beatles record (Please Please Me). These days Rock and Roll Hall of Fame DJ Dick Biondi pumps out the oldies on sister station WLS FM (94.7). From February 23rd through April 1, 2012 Dick Biondi is the voice of the radio DJ in the Off-Broadway musical Always... Patsy Cline at Theatre at the Center in Munster, IN based on the true story of Country singer Patsy Cline. On Friday, February 24th, Dick Biondi is the very special guest at a pre-party for Friday night's show where fans can meet the man who helps launch careers of many musical acts over the last 60 years.

RANDY KENDRICK (Concord, NC) Subject: Checking in. Jim, I see from your latest issue that my old colleague at Houston Traffic Central is celebrating another successful trip around the sun. If you could forward my regards for a Happy Birthday to Joannie Green-Gallo. We haven't talked in decades, but hoping she is in a good place in her life as well. All the best to you, old friend! Randy Kendrick Concord, NC USA

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego-San Marcos, CA) Subject: 2/20/2012 Trivia Question. Trivia answer. 2/20/2012 =yrs 72/73 I had recommended Frank Bonner (Herb Tarlek WKRP in Cincinnati) for a role in a low budget movie in which I was supposedly cast as the other male lead. There are all kinds of nuances to this bit of trivia but the gist is Frank got the role and I got the shaft. That role gave him enough credit to move into WKRP and then out into the vast wasteland of Hollywood. But I hope he's still around and doing well. I don't know the latter as a fact.

DAVID HOUSE (Fort Worth-North Richland Hills, TX) Hi, Jim, As Logan, Warwick and Davis know, I'm looking for any living soul who may have known and worked with mother (Jewell House of Texarkana) at the (Louisiana) Hayride. I wasn't familiar with (Bob) Sullivan, but he was mentioned as someone I should talk with, so I'm trying to find him. I'm skeptical that he'll have personal recollection of mother, but one never knows. If he doesn't, he may be able to point me toward someone who does. I've been on many a rabbit trail this summer. Yes, I'm in Fort Worth. North Richland Hills, actually. I was senior editor and ombudsman for the Star-Telegram from 2001 to April 2008 when my position was cut in "a management realignment." I've been freelancing since. Best, David House; Freelance Writer (www.fortworthwriter.com) Member: SPJ, Native American Journalists Association, Online News Association

JIM GOUGH (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1075) February 20, 2012 [Monday] I enjoyed reading about Larry Hagman in your latest letter. I was just getting started with an 'acting' career when I landed the role of a Congressman in the pilot episode of Dallas. Had a couple good scenes with Linda Grey and Larry. Luckily, I was able to return and do more episodes on the popular show. My last appearance was in 1985 playing a rodeo announcer. I actually introduced Texas' Governor Mark White. Good memories of good times. Jim gough

TONY WILLIAMS [Ex WKY-930/KRLD-1080/Metro Traffic] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) You're right Jim. Believe the model was a LeSabre (sp.). Yep, the fins were huge. Maybe it was supposed to look a little like the X-15 or something -- the space age and all that. Now that you mention it, he did buy it pre-Mercury spaceflights. We were still living in Holdenville, OK and did not move to Oklahoma City until May 1961. The strangest things, in retrospect, were the clear, plastic (I guess) A/C vents in the back window. Guess there were also vents for the A/C in the front, but I don't remember. When I was young, my parents let me sit in the middle of the front seat and play with the radio. It almost drove them insane with my trying to pick up distant stations and all the static. But they were tolerant of it. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Lacy. Tony

TRIVIA ANSWER: On November 21, 1980 the Dallas TV series episode Who Shot J. R.? is the most-watched program. Ninety million viewers tune in. That means almost 80% of all TV viewers that night tune into that episode of Dallas. Who Shot J. R.? is the second most-watched primetime broadcast in TV history.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Subject: Paul Menard Up and Down the Dial. Paul Menard on his way to be on the air in Las Vegas stops in to KCRS 550 in Midland after being on KILT 610. Paul meets with all the air talent of KCRS where in the mid 1960's Paul Menard was on afternoon drive where Parker Humes then Program Director lets Paul use sound effex on his show. Paul tells us he goes from Midland to Andrews Texas KACT Radio then to Lubbock while sitting at the head of the conference room table where I'm sitting to Paul's left. At the end of his meeting he asked me "what do you do here". I was age 17. Leslie
