ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
FLORIDA RADIO ICON IS GONE John Picano is the voice of Clear Channel WJNO-1290 in West Palm Beach, FL for years. On Thanksgiving Day 2012 John looses his battle with lung cancer. Jim Edwards WJNO-1290 morning host tells Radio Ink: There aren't enough positive words in the English Language to describe John Picano. He hired me at WJNO in 1984. I was working in Miami radio at the time. John had tried two previous years to hire me away from the "big city", but I declined until he offered me the News Director's job. John became my best friend in the business. I'll never forget John Picano. He was and will always be a great friend. My heart and prayers go out to his wife and children who I know well.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! YOU'RE FIRED! In December 2011, Midwest Family News/Talk WTDY-1670 begins to simulcast what was WWQN FM (106.7). WISC TV reports that the entire local air staff of WTDY-1670/WTDY FM (106.7) Madison, WI leaves the building including morning host John [Sly] Sylvester plus 7 or 8 others. WTDY drops its News/Talk format and stunts with Christmas music. WTDY FM-AM will probably debut a new CBS Sports Radio format after the Christmas holidays. In addition to WTDY and WTDY-FM, Midwest Family owns Rhythmic CHR WJQM FM (93.1 Jamz), WJJO FM Rock (94.1), AC WMGN FM (Magic 98), Country WWQM FM (Q106.3), Spanish CHR La Movida WLMV-1480 and Oldies WHIT-1550 Hit radio all in the Madison market.
ROLLING STONES CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION The Rolling Stones first London show in their 50 and Counting anniversary begins 30 minutes late. Because of London’s strict sound rules, the original bad boys of Rock run past London's 11pm curfew. The Sun estimates the Stones' fine is $320,000 (200,000 pounds). The 11pm curfew causes the Stones to drop their worldwide 1965 hit (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction from their encore performance. The Stones confuse fans when they end their show with Jumping Jack Flash instead of their usual closer (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. However, departing fans hear Satisfaction blaring out on loud speakers at a nearby railway station.

WINK MARTINDALE [network TV game show host] (Los Angeles, CA) Good morning Jim: Many thanks to you for your very nice note, and request. I enjoy reading your column on a regular basis. As the old Carly Simon song of the seventies goes, "nobody does it better". I would be delighted to share my thoughts and memories with you. Did you have in mind a phone interview? Or if it would be easier I could e-mail you a past interview or two I've done, which you could take from as you saw fit. If a phone interview would be your preference, with the holidays upon us already, would the first week or two in January work for you? You can call me at your leisure and we'll set this up. In the meantime, I'd like to wish you and Lacy the Merriest of Christmases and Happiest of Holidays. Best blessings, Wink

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: Wink. Looking up the lyrics to Deck of Cards, I ran across Wink Martindale. Remember him? He was one of the great hosts on Television. Quite handsome and his picture looks even better of him today. We all should age so well. By the way, my Christmas shopping is done, wrapped and paid for. While everyone was buying power ball chances I was shopping.

TONY BRIDGE [2010 Inductee-Texas Radio Hall of Fame] (Fort Worth-Benbrook, TX) Tony Bridge Reflects on Radio. As a High School student in Marshall, Texas, a trip to Dallas always included a visit to the WFAA Early Bird Show. After WBAP rang its Cowbell at 6:59am ending the stock reports and such, the shared 820 frequency switched to WFAA. At that point in time all big coverage stations had their own studio orchestra. So the music played as Announcer Norvell Slater introduced funny man Jimmy Jefferies and the day’s talent. So the day began in the Penthouse Studios high atop the Santa Fe building downtown. Little did I know then that during my senior year at SMU, I would receive a paid internship at Belo’s WFAA and the Dallas Morning news, writing feature stories for the paper and rewriting wire copy to localize the stories for radio. Also, writing news that would show up on the American Airlines sponsored electric sign that circled the First National Bank. When an American Airliner crashed and many passengers killed, it never occurred to me that the sponsor would be offended. What an uproar. Had not the News Director been an earlier member of the same SMU Fraternity as me, I would have been terminated immediately. Lesson learned at an early age. Always look after your sponsors' best interest. It served me well during my 60 year radio career. Next time: International news when KLUE Longview burns the Beatles' records.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In California there is no such roadway as Ventura Highway. But there is a Ventura County in California and Highway 101 runs through it. In 1973, Pop-Rock group America reaches #8 with their tune Ventura Highway.
JOANIE GREEN-GALLO (Tulsa, OK) OH!!! I LOVE THE PUN!!! That reminds me of Laugh-In where they had a shot of Flip Wilson bare-chested from the waist up and he had string of pearls around his neck. He deadpans into the camera, "What else do you wear with basic black?" Joanie
FLIP WILSON (December 8, 1933 - November 25, 1998) The devil made me do it.
