ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

JAZZ LEGEND TAKES FIVE FOR FINAL TIME In 1961, a very interesting Jazz instrumental recording that features a piano solo captures my attention. The song is Take Five by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The Jazz Classic rises to #25 on Billboard's Pop records survey. The song is from a 5/4 pattern that Dave Brubeck Quartet drummer Joe Morello enjoys playing backstage. Dave asks legendary alto saxophonist Paul Desmond to write a two-part melody over the rhythm, and Brubeck patched the pieces together. Dave Brubeck is born on December 6. 1920 in Concord, CA. He dies of heart failure one day short of his 92nd birthday on Wednesday, December 5, 2012. Dave Brubeck's survivors include his wife, Iola; four sons and a daughter; grandsons and a great granddaughter.

A NEW COUNTRY COWBOY RIDES INTO HOUSTON, TX Many thanks to former KILT FM news reporter, T.J. Calahan, for making us aware of new changes at Space City's CBS Radio purveyor of Country music. Effective Monday, December 10, 2012, Keola-Lui-Kwan rides into town to shake up local radio desperados as the new APD/MD/PM Drive DJ. Mark Adams, KILT FM PD, is ecstatic: Keola is a great on-air personality and programmer with a strong background in, and a passion for, Country music. Keola rides into Houston, TX from Lincoln Financial KYGO FM (98.5) Denver, CO. He has his hands full because during my time as a DJ on KILT FM from 1991-96 it is a solid #1 in the Bayou City. He faces strong competition from arch rivals KKBQ FM (92.9) and Country Legends KTHT FM (97.1).

IT'S ALL IN THE FAMILY The Wall Street Journal reports that its managing editor, Robert Thomson, will become CEO of the still-unnamed publishing company that News Corp will create next year in a spin off. In 2011, The New Yorker‘s Ken Auletta describes Thomson as perhaps Rupert Murdoch’s only close friend. The two men are both from Australia, married to Chinese women and were born (thirty years apart) on the same day. They are also both raising their children Catholic, and Murdoch is godfather to Thomson’s nine- and eleven-year-old sons. In the late 1990s the two's friendship begins when Thomson is U.S. managing editor of the Financial Times. In 2002, Robert joins News Corp when Murdoch names him editor of the Times of London. In 2007, Thomson relocates to the WSJ. After it spins off its News Corp publishing unit, Murdoch remains chairman and CEO of News Corp to focus on its TV and film properties that includes Fox TV.

JAMES MARVELL [Mercy lead singer 'Love Can Make You Happy' 1969] (Tampa, FL) Subject: My Country side. Hi Jim and Lacy, Well, you know a lot of my story with the group Mercy and the million seller "Love Can Make You Happy" but I also have a country music side to my career. It's about the long haired anti-drug duo who stirred up Nashville in the early 70s. WHISNews21 just broke the story. Folks can see our history including an old TV appearance from ABC TV's Wilburn Brothers' Show. Go to http://whisnews21.com/2012/11/14/james-marvell-and-the-country-cavaleers-story

DAVE MICHAELS (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Dave Brubeck is dead. I played Count (Take) Five on an FM station in the 60's...we did the news Over the top of Music ...hung a Mic out the back window of the Bldg while the rain (storm) was coming down. Played: John Lee Hooker, Oscar Brown, Sonny Stitt, Miles Davis, Peggy Lee, Lena Horn, John Gary, Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, John Lunsford, Cal Jyader, Pete Fountain and the Bonzo Dog Band all in one night of Music to eat "Hoss-en-pheffer" bye...with black eyed peas and baby-red potatoes steamed cooked with some crayfish in garlic sauce and a shot home-brew. Turn out the lights on the turntable. Dave Michaels

JOHN BASS [former KLIF-1190 newscaster] (Tyler, TX) Subject: Your ISP Suddenlink issues a delay. Exactly! My friend Robin Hood Brians (of Robin Hood Studios in Tyler) commented one time that whenever Microsoft comes out with a new version of Windows, they put the steering wheel in the trunk, the engine on the rear axel, and the most critical functions inside the crankcase...just to screw us all up...then we have to learn completely new ways to run the blasted thing! He was furious!!! And I must say, I totally agree! Why don't they make the blame things work like the ones we are replacing worked...and make the new functions operate within the same framework of use that we were accustomed to?!!

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S RADIO? WHERE IS RADIO HEADED? We want to know what is on your mind. Let's start a radio revolution.  Give us your opinion about today's radio or whatever is on your mind at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

PAT MCCUTCHIN (Austin-Georgetown, TX) Subject: At 4:19am Saturday another bounce email. Jim, Thanks for letting me know again about Suddenlink. I had the same problem about two months ago and it seemed to be cleared up. The entire email system was down all day yesterday and I just got a big load of them this morning. Ed Brandon were good friends at UT but I moved to west Texas and didn’t keep up with him. I have tried to find his email address. If you have time, email him and let him know I’m looking for him. We had some good times together. Thanks so much. Pat McCutchin

TONY BRIDGE [2010 Inductee-Texas Radio Hall of Fame] (Fort Worth-Benbrook, TX) Subject: THANKS JIM (and Lacy). Caught the WFAA story. The KLUE Burn the Beatles story follows. Will turn 81 on December 17th. At least for now, “I’m on the right side of the dirt.”

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Seekers (1962-2012 half a century!) is the only chart-topping group from the 1960s who still exist in 2012 with its original line up. Aussie born lead singer Judith Durham, Athol Guy (double stand up bass), Keith Potger (twelve-string guitar, banjo) & Bruce Woodley (guitar, mandolin, banjo) are Folk-Pop music quartet The Seekers. Three tunes make it big on America's charts: I'll Never Find Another You (#4-1965), A World of Our Own (#19-1965) and Georgy Girl (title song of the film of the same name #2 for 2 weeks Christmas 1966-67). Judith's voice is so mesmerizing. In 1962, The Seekers form in Melbourne. They are the first popular Down Under music group to achieve major chart and sales success in both the UK and the U.S. In 1995, they induct into the ARIA Hall of Fame with record sales of over 50 million. The Seekers new studio recordings celebrate their 50th Anniversary at www.youtube.com/watch?v=whpEYN3L_Zg.

GEORGE SCHANK [KSBJ FM engineer] (Houston-Conroe, TX) Subject: last week's trivia question. Jim, Interesting that you mentioned California Highway 101 in last week's trivia question. I've travelled that highway. While on a recent trip across Texas, with my grandchildren; I played "The Terror of Highway 101" for them. I have it on CD; along with many others. They asked me where I got all of those crazy old songs. Then, I started telling them the stories of my "glory" days in radio; and, they asked "You mean you really played music on the radio?" That's right kiddos! Now, turn off the I-Pod! Turn up the radio! George Schank

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN ['Glory Days'] Well time slips away and leaves you with nothing mister but boring stories of glory days.
