As for me, I no longer live in Beaumont, TX, but was born and raised there. I joined the US Navy in 1977, directly out of high school (Hebert High) and spent 27 years in, mostly overseas. I currently reside in Ebina, Japan a city about 20 miles southwest of Tokyo. I have a close friend (Hiro Ishikawa) who DJs late night on 84.7, FM Yokohama, and plays by request the sounds of 1970s Soul and R&B. I currently work for the US Department of Defense, that keeps me here for a few years. I was never in radio, but was a club DJ in a couple of backwoods juke joints in South Texas, early on in my Navy career, inspired by the music of my hometown radio station. My comments to your forum were mainly to reminisce on the cherish moments I experienced growing up in Beaumont, listening to KJET (the jet) with on air radio personalities like William "boy" Brown, Mr. Joyner and others. I found your link by chance looking for any type of info on Boy Brown. I was a very close friend of his daughter Regina. I was a bit disappointed when I could not find anything on this man who in my opinion was the voice of the black "Golden Triangle" during the 1960's. The tragic incident that placed him in a wheelchair for the remaining years of his life and removed the cool deep sound of his voice from radio, would once again expose the ugly side of the Southeast Texas, if put into film. Fortunately times have changed for the better and a film on this subject would educate our young men and women of Southeast Texas on what direction we must continue to go in the future. Thank you for responding to my comment and I hope to hear form you again the the near future. I have spent almost 50 years working in, and writing about radio, and over 25 years doing the same in the online world. And, while we still adhere to the adage "There ain't no geniuses here" I believe this will, at least, spur some thought and perhaps discussion, on what we can do to change those quarterly red numbers into black and make our wonderful industry a more joyous place in which to work. This also introduces our exciting new project...New Radio. I was one of the original DJs at KBNO-FM in Houston, along with Johnny Goyen, Ted Maynard, and a handfull of other crazies when KBNO began broadcasting live in 1970. We eventually became KRLY-FM with the Danny O'Brien in the mornings, Ray Cooper in the mid-day slot, Ron Foster in the afternoons, and Bob Allen (that was me) rockin' at night. What a great time that was for Houston radio. You had the AM powerhouse (KILT, the Big 610) slowly dwindling in the ratings. KNUZ was still a little player on the AM dial, but had a weak signal. On the FM side you had KRLY and KRBE battling it out with the top 40 sounds. KILT-FM, KLOL, and KAUM going after the adult rock ratings. Great radio for the Houston audience! Whatever happened to the good old days of fun radio?? I am now in Charlotte, NC working in the paper industry. I hope you include me in your next radio reunion. I wouldn't miss it. (1917-August 15, 2008)
Legendary music record producer and genius, Jerry Wexler, dies at 91 with congenital heart disease in his home in Siesta Key, FL around 3:45 am on Friday, August 15, 2008. Unless a person pays attention to information that is on record labels the Wexler name might not be in our memory bank but we radio DJs and music connoisseurs study that information each time we pick up a record. On CDs it takes a magnifying glass to try to decipher the tiny words on the miniature labels but not much information is there anyway. Since a little boy of 5 or 6 years old singers' records, music on the radio and its DJs cast spells on me that remain until my final breath. The name Jerry Wexler on Atlantic records seems to pop up often if not all the time. Jerry helps make singers like Ray Charles What'd I Say (#6-1959), Aretha Franklin Respect (#1-1967) and Chain of Fools (#2-1968) and other artists' names household words because of their huge hit records. Real magic takes place when their tunes cross-over to Top 40 radio and the rest is history. Jerry later ventures into other styles of music with such Country legends as Willie Nelson. Under Jerry's guidance on Atlantic records Willie scores with Shotgun Willie (1973), Bloody Mary Morning (1974) plus a duo with Tracy Nelson on After the Fire Is Gone (1974). Jerry is the son of Polish immigrants. Music elevates his enthusiasm for tones and rhythms since his teen years. In the late 1940s after he serves in the Army in World War II, he studies journalism in college. Then Billboard magazine hires Wexler as a writer. Jerry loves black music and its artists. In the 1940s and early 1950s the music industry refers to black recording artists as Race Music. That is until Wexler renames it Rhythm & Blues during his time at Billboard and that moniker remains today. David Ritz is the co-author of Jerry Wexler's 1993 memoir Rhythm and the Blues.

TRIVIA QUESTION: Andrea True has a #4 hit in 1976 with More, More, More. What former profession is she also a star? The answer appears below.

REPORTER SHOT IN GEORGIA
War zone journalism is a mighty risky business. Especially in the heat of a battle like the invasion of Georgia by its massive raging big bear neighbor Russia. Tamara Urushadze is on live TV when shots ring out in the middle of her report as a Russian Sniper bullet strikes her body. Like a real broadcast trooper she gets back up to say that the bullet only grazes her. She continues her live news report to let TV viewers know what just happens. This incident goes on near Gori on Georgia's east-west highway where some of the bloodiest battles occur. Despite the so-called ceasefire, Russian troops still are on the move in the area. A peace-pact indicates that Russia may withdraw its war machine on Monday, August 18, 2008 but we certainly don't hold our breaths. We can only pray that Russia does indeed get their military tanks, weapons and soldiers the heck out of Georgia and let its citizens try to repair the damage and get back to their normal lives. This kind of activity is unacceptable in times like these or anytime. We live in troubled times on all fronts. That's why America's new president must be one we can trust who has the military experience to keep America strong, safe and secure. If not, this same thing can happen to us right here in the land that we love.

FLAG-DRAPED CASKETS
Early Friday morning, August 15, 2008 I run across an interesting story in a newspaper about a bill that introduces into the U.S. House of Representatives which requires The Department of Defense to give photojournalists access to ceremonies that honor America's fallen military heroes. If you remember not too long ago photos that capture groups of flag-draped caskets that return to America from the war overseas receive the stiff-arm treatment by American authorities. Actions like these hide the deaths of our young women and men who die on foreign soil. This new bill brings this extremely important subject to the forefront once more. To find out the thoughts of a select few of JRRR's readers and subscribers about this I forward a photo of flag-draped caskets along with the news story about the new bill. Here are comments from those who choose say anything.

DERRILL E. HOLLY (Arlington, VA) You are saying there shouldn't be a ban on photos right? I know it is truly sad, but people do need to get a real view of the ongoing high costs of not just freedom but U-S foreign policy. I've had occasion to be on the grounds of both Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the U-S Naval Medical Center at Bethesda when the ambulance buses pull up... Been in the wards at Walter Reed too, and Jim, it's enough to break your heart. Strong men and women in good spirits just trying to put their lives back together... It ain't about agreeing or disagreeing with the war, it's about feeling for these young people who make so many of us on your email list seem really, really old... The numbers are not what they were in the Viet Nam era to be sure and the good news is that military medicine is keeping so many more of them alive... but pictures like this and of the survivors could serve a very useful purpose... that's making sure that those who serve get a deal that truly makes sense for what they contribute. Still grimace about stories of folks being hit for the cost of their post combat medical care or scraping by to keep their families close during long recoveries, and the children of fallen service personnel having to worry about college costs. It has not in the past nor will it now deter patriotism, and respect for those who fell in service to our country. Cemeteries are open to the public and every Federal holiday that salutes Veterans a flag is placed in their final resting place. It's not a disgrace, a protest or dishonoring them by having photos.
JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Jim, I checked you out in Cashbox. How cool is that?!? I somehow met through the internet a guy who covers radio events in Houston and I meant to send his email to you. It just seems to me that the two of you would hit it off. I have misplaced his email while having ISP problems, but if I run across it...well, it keeps crossing my mind that the two of you just might hit if off and perhaps be of benefit to each other. He's an old radio guy from the Houston area. You may already know him. I never did tell you how I found your site. An old friend of mine from KLIF, Scott Hodges, who lives down in Louisiana sent it to me. We were in the process of his trying to locate some old Kliffers at the time. Keep up the good work. JC

DAN MCCURDY [Charlie & Harrington, Charlie Brown, Dan Patrick] (Sherman-Denison, TX) Jim, an "I wuz there" correction for your August 13 issue of JRRR...and so were a bunch of other jocks country-wide who found great, um, bathroom comfort in the fact that Marty Robbins recorded "El Paso" in 1959, long before "The Animals' " rendition of "House of the Rising Sun" in 1964. Marty's song, at 4:21, :45 version and 4:41 album version, long predated the Animal's great 4-minute plus hit. And boy were Ron Chapman and I (Charlie and Harrigan, KLIF in Dallas) and many others of that era glad for the "whew" unintended consequences of Marty's opus. Matter of fact, though the song is somewhat of a classic Zane Grey-like epic poem, I've long felt that the length of the song and the, uh, comfort it provided, added considerably to its airplay, and thus its ultimate national success. My very best to you and all true radioheads out yonder... Keep up the good work. Dan McCurdy - aka: Charlie Brown, Dan Patrick (KLIF; WMEX - Boston; KBOX) Sherman, TX. McCartney and Shevell visited an antique shop and a restaurant in Tucumcari on Thursday, then stopped in Gallup on Saturday to take in dances at the 87th Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial. Dario Chioda was in the announcer's booth at ceremonial when he learned McCartney was in the audience. But he said McCartney motioned that he wanted to keep his visit quiet. McCartney and Shevell began their journey from his holiday home in The Hamptons, N.Y., on July 31. They picked up the old Route 66 in Illinois on their way to Santa Monica, Calif. Most of them involved sex, drugs, and hard country music. Probably a basic difference in the way we've each lived our lives, Jim. I've always been pretty much interested in The Edge of Reality, right there where it begins to veer off into Unreality. Staying up "roaring" as we used to call drinking whiskey with George and/or various members of the Jones Boys for 2 or 3 days at a time was more my kinda thing in the 60's. And then in the 70's, Willie and Waylon and all the stoned craziness that happened at those outdoor concerts that seemed to go on for weeks at a time. I've got stories, sure enough, but they may be kinda hardcore, and likely not very suitable for your website (or perhaps even you). We need to have some sort of a more X-rated forum, 'cause I know for a fact that I'm not the only ol' radio guy with such tales to tell. You're doin' great, Jim. Keep us talkin'. As a youngster who grows up in Dallas, TX in the Fabulous Fifties when Elvis begins to Rock, the sound of a steel guitar does not ring my chimes. But the first time that I ever hear Don Helms' steel guitar on Hank Williams' tunes it knocks my socks off. Helms has his very own special touch with a steel guitar that no one ever matches even unto this day. We hear Don Helms' steel on more than 100 of Hank, Sr.'s recordings that include the ultimate Classics: Your Cheatin’ Heart, Cold, Cold Heart, I Can’t Help (It If I’m Still In Love With You) and many other timeless tunes. Don's steel causes Hank's recordings to reach out and grab us and makes us fans for life. In 1953 Hank Williams passes away but Helms' steel never leaves the playing field. We hear his guitar on big hits by Patsy Cline (Walkin’ After Midnight #2-1957), Stonewall Jackson (Waterloo #1-1959), Lefty Frizzell (Long, Black Veil (#6-1959). Don writes tunes that Brenda Lee, Hank Williams Jr. and more put to wax. In 1984, Don Helms inducts into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. Don continues his fine art in Nashville, TN until his untimely death. The 66-year-old former Beatle and his girlfriend Nancy Shevell are on a U.S. road trip across America's famed Route 66. That scenic cruise is one of my goals in life but nowadays just a half-mile trip west on Memorial to the grocery store is as far as I go and that's akin to a destruction derby. Tony Contos, a museum assistant, remembers, They parked in the wrong bay and were nearly towed away. Paul was engrossed, Nancy seemed in a bit of a hurry. Sir Paul and his lady friend put a slight shock into the museum staff when they stop in en route from Nancy's home in the Hamptons, NY. Pamela Blesen at the museum says I froze.
DEAN DANIELS (Dallas, TX) Hi Jim, Another legend in the shaping of Nashville's music history passed away last week. Elmer Alley was the creator of "Fanfair," "Opryland" and the person in charge of the launch and programming of TNN, The Nashville Network prior to the sale of that network to Gaylord Enterprises in late 1983. Here's the press release making the rounds on the internet: "Elmer Alley, creator of Fan Fair, Opryland, dies at 87 - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 – Elmer Alley, 87, a creator of Fan Fair and Opryland, died Monday. Alley also had a career in radio, television, the record industry and cable television. Accomplishments spanning over 40 years included recording audio engineer (Hank Williams, Beryl Ives and others), songwriter, comic on the Waking Crew on radio, program director for WSM TV, producer/director of syndicated country music shows, puppeteer, a voice on radio and television commercials, co-creator of Opryland, creator of Fan Fair, launched the Nashville Network and executive producer/writer for Hee Haw for two years. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II as a communications specialist in India." According to Ralph Emery on his own website, Elmer was the person who recognized Ralph's radio talents and gave him a shot at television. Elmer Alley was a gifted visionary and by all accounts a very good person who will be missed. I’m reading Chuck Dunaway’s book now. He tells some fascinating stories about stations we knew and loved. Hope it is not another decade before we get together again. Hi, As usual great column. T. S. Monk was great; however; I think one performer was also instrumental and that was Charlie Christian. I think every guitarist after hearing him knew they would need to practice, or put away their instrument for good. It is interesting to that he was in a group with T-Bone Walker. Unfortunately they were gone from the scene when I got interested in Jazz and Blues but not their influence. I still have a copy of Solo Flight with Charlie Christian and a lp recorded at Mintons with Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonoius Monk. I like the work of Thelonius Monk's son. I use to enjoy listening to Pat Patterson, Jazz Workshop, Sundays on KFAD. He talked about the music in an educated manner and not just played the recordings. I am getting use to my new hearing aides, I don't feel as bad seeing that my favorite weatherman in a newspaper ad mentions wearing hearing aides. My mother let me know I needed hearing aides but I thought no way... They tested me and I could not hear a signal word on the list, then when I went to a booth I was able to copy 90% with headphones. I hope everyone here takes care of their hearing and vision considering I have had problems with both. This morning on my Sangean ATS-818, I was hearing Voice of Indonesia on 9525, there is not much on shortwave like there use to be but there are still interesting stations to hear. I once got to meet Bob Stewart when he was with KSAX 970 in the Quadrangle, I visited with another friend in radio. Last night I heard a station on 1070 with a talk show, but it faded just as ID time approached... The 77 year old Novak is a 25 year charter member of CNN where he co-hosts Evans and Novak for many years. During most of its 25 years on the air he is the Conservative voice of CNN cable TV news network's Crossfire. This involves several important radio properties: KYRK FM (The Rock of New Orleans 104.1) New Orleans-Houma, LA; WAKS FM (Cleveland's Hit Music Channel 96.5) Cleveland-Akron, OH; Alternative WURH FM (104.1) Hartford-Waterbury, CT and Alternative WJRR FM (The Rock Station 101) Orlando-Cocoa Beach, FL are just a few. The multibillion-dollar Clear Channel buyout closes the last week of July 2008. CC places some of its radio stations in what they call the Aloha Station Trust to meet FCC ownership rules. On Monday, August 4, 2008 CC releases the list of the stations that move to the Trust that Jeannette Tully controls. Remember the 1950s and 1960s Classic TV game show, Who Do You Trust? Do you recall the name of its host? Aha! It's Johnny Carson. That's pre-NBC's Tonight Show days. In 2007, when CC buys KLOL FM (101.1) it switches Houston, TX's 30 year legendary Album Rock station to music from south of the border down Mexico way. Creates quite an stir with us loyal Classic Rock listeners but we have no control over the situation. Maybe a new owner sees the light and brings back the Bayou City's Album Rock station along with its great DJs but we do not hold our breath. Another popular Houston radio station is in the shuffle: Hot AC KHMX FM (Mix 96.5). What's at hand is CC either sells off or exchanges Classic Rock WOFX FM (92.5) & Adult Album Alternative WNNF FM (Radio 94.1) Cincinnati, OH along with the two Houston radio stations to comply with the government's ruling. Mindful of a huge basket full of radio stations with a mad rush of buyers' hands that reach and grab everything in sight. Does this bring back a sliver of hope for America's terrestrial radio's return to glory? That word terrestrial only becomes a hot topic since the arrival of the Land of the Free's two satellite radio companies. But here in the summer of 2008 they join hands as one to create a new radio cartel which puts an end to its free trade.

DEAN DANIELS (Dallas, TX) Hi Jim, It never ceases to amaze me what the government these days considers a monopoly, the XM and Sirrus merger making that entity the only satellite radio network out there and without competition (the definition of monopoly?) Meanwhile a couple of years ago the powers that be decided against the merger of Direct-TV and Dish Network because in their opinon THAT would create a monopoly, despite the fact the two satellite programming companies compete against cable and phone system networks for the same audience. That merger would not have actually been a monopoly, just another delivery source freely competing against the cable and emerging monolithic phone system program delivery services such as Verizon. Not only old-time Country artists rebel but fans join them in protest. One well-known Country Classics artist who comes to mind is Stonewall Jackson. He has a lawsuit against the Opry because he no longer has a prime time spot on stage. These are the recording artists who make the 83 year old Grand Ole Opry an American icon. Of course the Opry denies this shun happens but seems like the facts outweigh their words. Guess the Opry wants to put a kind of hush to these rumors about Classic Country artists because the Grand Ole Opry adds a fourth show to its normal weekly schedule with the name Opry Country Classics that spotlights those Oldies which definitely are the Goodies. Steve Buchanan, President of Gaylord Entertainment's Grand Ole Opry Group, refers to these as the standards of Country music. Beginning in 2009 Thursday nights become known as Opry Country Classics with Classic Country stars picking and singing the tunes that make them and the Opry famous as institutions. Probably another factor is that Country radio no longer plays Classic Country hits that go back to the 1950s to the 1980s. John Conlee, an Opry member since 1981, who has one of Country music's great hit standards Rose Colored Glasses. In 1978, while I am a DJ on KNUZ-1230 here in Houston we play that song when it is brand new. A great tune like that really sticks in our minds but we never hear them anymore. Conlee performs at least 80 shows each year. His fans yearn for Classic Country tunes, What I've found in the last few years is there is a hunger for Classic Country like never before. I think part of the hunger is they don't hear us as much on new Country radio. So the best way for them to hear us is to come to a live show. I think this new Opry night will give yet another opportunity for that. I think this is going to bring some of those standards back into play. I think you'll hear a lot of us do those songs again, and that's great because when you stop to think about many of the folks who did those songs are no longer here to do them. Cannot express it any better myself because I, too, miss playing those Country Classics on the radio because I remember them as brand new tunes. Like present Grand Ole Opry broadcasts we get to hear Thursday night Classic Country on Nashville, TN's legendary WSM-650 which shoots out its signal all over America at night. Bring on the Classics! Salute!

TRIVIA QUESTION: Who is the backup singer on Carly Simon's hit You're So Vain? The answer appears below.

COUNTRY CLASSICS BIRTHDAY
One of Nashville, TN's finest songwriters, singers and pianists Bobby Braddock is 68 years young this week. Bobby comes to life on August 5, 1940 in Lakeland, FL. He goes on to write timeless Classics like one of my absolute favorite George Jones' tunes He Stopped Loving Her Today and countless other hits. The song reaches #1 in 1980. If you never hear that song before, it's well worth your time to find it and listen closely to the words. The first time that I ever play the song on the radio, the last line nearly knocks me off the chair. Guarantee that you cannot wait to listen to the tune again and a little closer the next time. The song tells a story that captures our heart. Sometimes it seems like songwriters are overnight sensations but Bobby says he writes maybe 150 songs before he gets his first writing deal that pays money. Braddock claims that it takes another two years and 100 songs before his first Top 10 hit. Then a few months later comes his first #1 hit tune. Bobby says after his first big hit by Tammy Wynette, D-I-V-I-O-R-C-E, he splurges and buys a swimming pool. Bobby is a member of the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame with 13 #1 hits and 29 BMI performance awards. Sony/Tree publishes Bobby's hit songs for over 38 years! Salute!

DERRILL E. HOLLY (Arlington, VA) Subject: The KIKK and Elvis item. Chris Collier, that is a name I hadn't heard in years. The old South Shaver studios in Pasadena were a fun little ole radio factory back then. You'll recall that the sales, accounting and business departments had moved over to Gulfton in late spring. You, me and Charlie Ochs were hired within a matter of weeks of each other (Think I got there first and joined the news department under Buddy Sadler). Bottom line was that with no one there but the promotions crew, half the engineering staff and the air staff, the inmates really had a summer to run the asylum. It was a good time. Still remember the day Elvis died, we went to the walls on the news side while Collier, Ochs, Joe Ladd and others put together a huge tribute vigil special. It was good radio, KIKK was number one, and to paraphrase Barbara Mandrell, Country was so darn cool. Derrill E. I congratulate them all, however I believe some reform is really needed in the election process. I don't ever to be inducted myself, and I am okay with that really, but there are so many that deserve to be, that (under the current ballot form) most likely will never be either. I have spoken in the past about this, and received a cool reception. There are several "inductees" who ar in agreement with me whom I also spoke with about the way the ballot is composed. The first year of balloting it was broken down according to market size and I believe position. Now it's a single one size fits all. The well known names over shadows the others who literally worked their b***s off and contributed significantly to broadcasting in Texas. They are the small to medium market guys, producers, etc. The ballot needs to go back to market size and position, second the vote tallys should become available at the Texas Radio Hall of Fame site. After all if elected offices in government can show vote tallys, why not the TROF? A change is needed. Also on that fateful day - August 16, 1977 - while I motor west on I-10, scan the AM dial to find KIKK-650. Think I hear the words that Elvis Presley dies. Oh no! But it's true. So always remember that day of the year as the time that I move to bigger and better things on KIKK FM but we lose our favorite singer and entertainer who is like a part of our families. Both KIKKs still broadcast from old hurricane tested 2-story building in Houston's far eastern corridor of Pasadena, TX where its main significance is proximity to Houston's giant Ship Channel that leads to the Port of Houston. Pasadena also has some great rodeos and gun shows, too. The brand new 2-story building is under construction on Gulfton in Houston's bright and shiny southwestern area off I-59. When the new construction completes both KIKKs move into new headquarters and no longer simulcast. KIKK-650 is the original legendary Country radio station for Houston but our city outgrows its 250 watt daytime only operation. KIKK FM brings a strong 24 hour Country music operation with top flight DJs. On the very first day to broadcast from the new location the powers that be select me to be the first voice listeners hear on both KIKKs. We begin with KIKK FM in its new control room. After that I go down the hall to the new KIKK-650 control room. Now both KIKKs are in a brand new building with great new equipment in our city's hot place to be - Southwest Houston. Next week is the annual Elvis adulation Week in Memphis, TN with countless celebrations of The King's music and mystic. 2008 brings a new addition of Elvis and Priscilla Barbie doll sets with only 198 available for sale.
MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Glad you all had a great time at the Houston radio reunion! Wish I coulda been there. Great photos on Josh's site. We had a nice lunch get-together in Dallas last Friday for our local radio folks...good turnout as well! Marvin Brown wrote you a few days back about the history of KBOX. Don't know if he ran across it already, but I've got what's hopefully the definitive history of KBOX on my website; go to www.knus99.com/kbox1480.html. Lots of former KBOXers helped out on it, including the late Bill Ward, who was the PD who flipped it from Top 40 to country in 1967 (in fact, we lost Bill 4 years ago this week.) The site lists the announcers and other talent by year, as Marvin asked for. BTW, we're still doing "The Hi-Fi Club" every Sunday night, 6PM-7PM on KMNY-1360 in DFW (the old KXOL.) Lots of local radio/TV news, 'this week in music history,' celeb birthdays, and a few oldies sprinkled in. We're now part of the new Rational Radio Network, a progressive talker that features former longtime KAAM personality Jack Bishop as GM and talk show host. The "Hi-Fi" website is www.thehificlub.net; a link to streaming is there as well. MIKE

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, When I was a member of NRC and IRCA, clubs for MW DX, a friend sent me of an air check of Jazz hosted by a Bob Grant. This was in the 80's. I am wondering whether it is the same Bob Grant. It came from Greg Monti who I think now works for NPR. I was thinking about stations I have heard from San Antonio. I use to get KTSA 550, and they come in here in the day but not like in the past, I think they have changed their antenna pattern; I use to like the AOR on KMAC 630, but then they went religious, they still put in a good signal in the daytime; 680 makes a great signal hear best in the morning but most of the day, but forget their call sign though at night KFEQ is usually the dominant station and at times a station from Cuba; at sunrise for about an hour I can sometimes pull in the station on 930, Usenet Rec.Broadcasting use to have the consultant for their Big Band Format in the news group but not sure if he still contributes; WOAI 1200 can be heard almost anytime here day or night. On FM I have heard KAJA 97.5. I use a Sangean ATS-818 with a Select-Antenna from C Crane and also a G.E. Superadio II with a Radio Shack Loop, since Gary Ketler impressed me with his catches using the Superadio. I still wonder how Gary could hear his DX since I thought I was very good at this until I met him. I did not know other DXers exsisted until I was in college in 1971. 92.1 is a hoot to listen to hear since sometimes the station from Cleburne dominates other times the station from Farmersville, both have Country programming so I have to wait for ID or spots to be sure which I am receiving. I just use the built in whip for my antenna on FM. I have tried to pull in KONO 860, but have not had any luck. I usually get KKOW, Pittsburg, Kansas and sometimes a station in Mississippi at sunset. I even have gotten at times the station in Nacogdoches,Texas. I once heard XEUAM 860, Radio UNAM, Mexico City, D.F., Mexico and sent them a letter, the engineer replied saying he was surprised but I did hear the station. At night if I play with my antenna I can usually null out KKDA 730 enough to copy XEX from Mexico, City. At night about 12:30 CST 0030 UTC have been getting All India Radio in Hindi and some English on 7190. It seems the Eagle 97.1 has taken to doing AOR, makes me wonder why stations give up good programming only to return. I still remember calling it when it was KWXI and talking to the announcer on duty. He was kind enough to discuss radio and music for about an hour when I was in high school. He asked me why I liked KWXI instead of the others... I never did go with the pack. I can be a cameleon in my musical tastes. I liked the station when I needed to study. My parents would let me listen to the radio when I studied as long as it did not keep me from studying. From 1973-75 Josh's dad the late legendary newscaster/news director Joe Holstead reports the news on my KFJZ-1270 DJ program in Ft. Worth, TX. Try my best to stay away from large gatherings of folks but famous Houston, California and Nashville, TN radio esquires Barry Kaye and C.C. McCartney insist that I attend. The gentlemen arrive in their bright red chariot to swiftly haul my buns to the big radio event. Grab a table as soon as I get there. Guess that my bright yellow KITE-930 basketball jersey from 1972 shines a glow that attracts radio folks from the past and present. Once while wandering through the maddening crowd a very attractive young woman stops me to take a picture. But she only wants to cature my yellow KITE jersey on her digital camera. So many wonderful radio friends in attendance and a whole lot of JRRR readers flock to our table. Most of the folks snap pictures with the latest digital cameras but my big boxy Poloroid 600 instant camera performs like a champ. Let's see if I can remember all of the wonderful folks who visit our table to pose for pictures: Chuck Dunaway and his wife Kendall, Paul Williams, Clint Wright, J.R. Kennedy, Bud Bushardt, Colonel St. James and his girlfriend, Phillip Stewart, Shotgun Cook and his wife Karen, Mike Cannon, my favorite female traffic reporter of all time T.J Callahan, Jerry Miller [Mueller] and wife. Hope that I don't leave anyone out because in haste leave my writing instrument at home with Tejas to guard it. As I wander about, run into my KILT FM buddy Jim Carolla, John Steel, Dade Moore, Mark Landis, Harold Gunn, Bill Bailey, Josh Holstead, Robert B. McEntire, Sally Williams, Dan Gallo, Andy Waldrop and Chuck Joseph gives me a big bear hug. Want to give a special thank you to my good buddy from WFAA radio and TV days in the late 1960s Bud Bushardt because he brings a plate full of mighty good-tasting food, salad and Dr. Pepper and places it right there in front of me to devour in between photo shoots, handshakes and hugs. Do not bring enough film to take snapshots of all of the wonderful folks who we see. At times it seems like the entire 200 media guests surround our table. Makes me dizzy miss lizzy. Every single one of these starbrights head my list as the absolute finest people in existance. Wonderful time up there. Do run into one bad apple, though. Josh says that because of its success another Houston Radio Reunion takes place next year. Mike Marshall, WFAA DJ friend from the late 1960s, and his wife should be back from Italy to attend.

TRIVIA QUESTION: Where does Rock band Lynard Skynard get their name? The answer appears below.

IT'S A DONE DEAL
Well it finally comes to be. America's only two satellite radio companies, XM and Sirius, merge and become one. This can never happen because our federal government declares that before they become satellite radio broadcasters they never are to merge. How many of those fine folks cross their fingers behind their backs as they sign this important federal document? Evidently all of them have fingers in X positions but do they say Hope to die? All of them speak with forked tongues. If you remember last year I make this prediction but no one agrees with me. To me it is inevitable. Alone they remain in red but together they may soar like eagles or flop like fish. The name of the new company is Sirius XM Radio with the Nasdaq symbol SIRI.

IMAX COMES TO JAPAN
Tokyu and Imax sign a deal to bring four Imex theaters to Japan.
