ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

YOU AIN'T NOTHING BUT A HOUND DOG Big Mama Thornton is the first singer who growls and moans that statement in her R&B recording of Hound Dog. In 1953, her Hound Dog is #1 on Billboard's R&B survey for 7 weeks with sales of almost 2 million copies. Those soulful words also are very familiar to us avid Elvis Presley fans. Elvis the Pelvis' version of the tune is #1 for 11 weeks with sales of over 3 million copies. The song's writers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller are extremely successful with tunes by several other singers in the 1950s and on into the 1960s. Their tunes are fun and exciting. Leiber and Stoller write more than 50 Classic Rock and Roll hits for singers and groups like The Coasters, The Drifters, Ben E. King, Elvis Presley and many others. In November 1969. when Jazz singer Peggy Lee records Leiber and Stoller's Is That All There Is? she weaves her very own piece of magic. Plus, it is her last #1 tune. So very sad to report that on Monday, August 22, 2011 Jerry Leiber dies of cardio-pulmonary failure at 78. JRRR extends our deepest sorrow to Jerry Leiber's family, friends, fans and to Jerry's creative partner and friend for more than 50 years, Mike Stoller.

She declares herself to be a Martyr to Protect Colleagues. Misrati waves a pistol while on the air during her weekend broadcast. She shouts: With this weapon, I either kill or die today. You won't take the channel, Tripoli or all of Libya. I will protect my colleagues at the channel… We are willing to become martyrs. On Monday, August 22, 2011 the head of Libya's rebel National Transitional Council brags that the rebels capture Muammar Gaddafi's son, Saif Al-Islam. At press time the anarchists pretty much are in control of the city of Tripoli. Breaking news! Foxnews.com issues this statement: Col. Muammar al-Qaddafi’s son and heir Saif al-Islam, who was believed to have been captured by rebels, appears at a Libyan hotel and tells Fox News that the rebels have been lured into a trap and will be crushed.  Stay tuned to this Bat channel.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Hi, Jim and Lacy, I'd gladly share some of this rain and cool temps with you. We got near ten inches and it's down to below 60*. August on Cape Cod has gotten to be a very rainy month. We're WAY over our limit, and the month is only half gone. I know...that's nothing to complain about, but I'm just venting. Sorry you guys are in such a hot/dry cycle. Tom

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1015) August 22, 2011 [Monday] Hey Jim" Great commentary. radio is not all that compelling to listen to anymore unless it's severe weather moving into an area, traffic report or some major news flash. I bristle when I hear some kid on the air with an oldies...oh pardon me...I mean "classic hits" station who can't pronounce some group names, sounds less than thrilled about being on the air plus you can tell they are reading a liner. Those hooked on phonics courses need to be revamped. Ad libbing is gone, knowledge about the music is gone, reading info from entertainment weekly E! channel, "Access Hollywood" is not prep. "researched music" in one market doesn't mean it fits all markets. There is no sense of local identity, except call letters and geography. Contests used to be local and large, like give away dream vacations, cars, cash giveaways in the amount of the frequency. Now it's call at 7:20am to a toll free number, where you are unbeknownst competing with others across the country via their station that may have a completely different format at the same time, trying to get through. Then there is Voice tracking, CHEAP, no local atmosphere, slotted when the 34 song playlist rotates. requests are banked and "maybe" played back if that particular song comes up in rotation perhaps a month later. Radio is on life support and the oxygen level has reached critical, All my best to you Jim. Ray Whitworth

JIM GOUGH [Mr. Texas-actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Re: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1015) August 22, 2011 [Monday] We were talking about KRIV TV-26 in Houston when my computer crashed. My office was in the building at 3935 Westheimer when 26 occupied the bottom floor. George Elliott was manager and he asked me to represent the station. I created the logo (they remembered I had recently done the logo for KPRC channel 2) and we started a campaign called: "KVRL...it's an eyeball!" The station got way behind with paying my bills and I had to get Leon Schindler (who ran their ranch) in Ellinger to make Raymond pay up! Another good friend from the station, Pat Burt was in sales along with my good friend Erik Johnson whom I still work with in Colorado Springs to this day. And now you know the rest of the story. Jim Gough

ROY LEMONS (Grove, OK) Subject: Good to read your column. I was at KIKK (650) in the beginning. We were dead last in the Bayou City and had to overcome signing off at sundown. After Buffalo Bill Bailey joined the station as PD we started kicking a**. Bailey, Arch Yancey, Richard Dobyn and other Top 40 retreads brought modern country music to Houston. Amazing what that station did, Leroy Gloger was a promoting genius and he pulled the right strings. Love your column and remember the great days of radio...glad to have been a part of it. Roy Lemons, KIKK SM, KBUY GM, KTYL/KJET GM, WBOK GM, KTYL Owner

TRIVIA ANSWER: On TV's the Dukes of Hazzard, Uncle Jesse's CB handle is Shepherd, Bo and Luke Duke's handle is Lost Sheep and the foxy Daisy's handle is Bo Peep.

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: idea. Jimbo why don't you get a giant fan, put it by the Gulf, face it toward this direction and blow some of the water this way. We have had no rain this summer. The wild animals are coming to my yard for feed and water. Our water is rationed. The lake is over five foot low. It has ranged from 108 to 113 degrees on average. Trees are shedding brown leaves like snow.

HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW (1807-1882) The best thing one can do when it's raining is to let it rain.

ANOTHER SUMMER ROCK CONCERT STAGE TUMBLES DOWN Reports arrive on Thursday, August 18, 2011 from Belgium and Holland about three people who perish at the Pukkelpop music festival. Chaos erupts when a strong gale causes the Pukkelpop stage to collapse while Chicago, IL Rock band Smith Westerns perform during its annual three-day festival just east of Brussels in Hasselt, Belgium. The 60,000-person event struggles when a tempest uproots trees and crashes into the stage. Hasselt's mayor claims that at least three spectators die and possibly 40 others receive injuries. Rick Hoogkamp, of Dutch NOS TV, informs the Associated Press that the sky got dark and violent winds as well as hailstones threatened the concertgoers. Festival organizer Chokri Mahassine confesses to the AP: We have for now put the festival on hold until we understand the situation completely. Other bands experience mayhem during typhoons. On July 27, 2011 Cheap Trick ducks out of the way when the Ottawa Bluesfest stage crumples during a storm that causes a few injuries. On August 7th, Flaming Lips lighting equipment is destroyed by a storm in Tulsa, OK.

BYE BYE FM ROCK RADIO Rock music on the FM dial today fast becomes like Rock music on the AM dial in the 1970s as News-Talk radio pushes Rock groups like the Rolling Stones off into the sunset. Shock Jock Howard Stern takes credit for the demise of Classic Rock music on CBS WYSP FM (94.1) when he exits terrestrial radio five years ago. Beginning on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 37-year Rock WYSP FM in Philadelphia, PA debuts its simulcast with CBS Sportsradio WIP-610. But the annihilation of Rock music on the FM dial goes much deeper than that. Listeners are sick and tired of hearing the same old 300 tunes over and over again with a handful of them on rotation almost hourly. There are other great songs that never reach the Top 10 which still are favorites of ours. But they disappear like dust in the wind as all FM Rock stations play the exact same tunes over and over again. This is probably because today's new FM Classic Rock programmers are not even alive when these songs first hit the airwaves. Each one of these new FM programmers uses the very same list of guidelines plus the same stacks of CDs that someone far away says that they must play over and over.

FRANK HALEY [Legendary 1960s KLIF-1190 Newscaster] (Albuquerque, NM) There's an old sea story about a ship's Captain who inspected His sailors, and afterward told the first mate that his men smelled bad. The Captain suggested perhaps it would help if the sailors Would change underwear occasionally. The first mate responded, "Aye, aye sir, I'll see to it immediately!" The first mate went straight to the sailors berth deck and announced, "The Captain thinks you guys smell bad and wants you to change your underwear." He continued, "Pittman, you change with Jones, McCarthy, you change with Witkowski, and Brown, you change with Schultz." THE MORAL OF THE STORY: Someone may come along and promise "Change", But don't count on things smelling any better.

TULSA'S TOWER MAN COMES DOWN In the last issue of JRRR we file a report on a man who climbs half way up the 300' tower of a Tulsa, OK TV station on Thursday morning, August 11, 2011. This ties up two-dozen cop cars plus no telling how many fire and EMS units. Police identify the 25 year old guy simply as William. We learn that William Boyd Sturdivant II is well-known to local authorities because of his history of mental illness plus he just leaves jail in April 2011. Because of the heat William pulls off his shirt and pants down to his boxer shorts. He refuses to come down from his ivory tower for over 6 days. On Tuesday evening, August 16th retired police negotiator, Tyrone Lynn, coaxes the man down off of the tall TV tower. Around 6:40 pm Tuesday Sturdivant climbs into a Tulsa Fire Department truck lift which brings him 100 feet down to the ground.

AUGUST 16, 1977 On Tuesday, August 16, 2011 I receive an email from a JRRR reader way up north near Wilmington, DE with a reminder that I forget a very important date. She says that Elvis Presley dies on August 16, 1977. JRRR keeps me knee deep in so many things that it completely slips my mind. Well, August 16, 1977 also marks the day that I'm on I-10 on my way to Houston, TX as a new DJ on KIKK FM. Back then KIKK FM is a solid #1 here in the Bayou City. It shares its studios with KIKK-650 in a hurricane worn old 2-story building in Pasadena. Chris Collier is the KIKK FM PD who hires me. The legendary Joe Ladd is the KIKK Music Director. Charlie Ochs is to be the new KIKK FM MD. At the same time a brand new 2-story building is under construction at 6306 Gulfton in the exciting and popular SW Houston. KIKK FM simulcasts with sister station KIKK-650 but the two go separate ways in the new building. When we move into the new location I'm to be the new mid-day DJ on KIKK FM. But until then I fill in on weekends on KIKK FM plus whenever needed on KIKK-650. But before we move into the new building toward the end of 1977 Chris leaves the building and a new hot shot PD is his replacement. In early 1978 when both KIKKs go on the air in their separate studios with brand new equipment I am the first voice that they choose to be a DJ in the new KIKK FM studio. After that I move down the hall to the KIKK-650 studio as its first voice in the brand new building. The new KIKK FM PD and I do not see eye-to-eye on several things. So, Larry Vance KNUZ-1230 PD makes me an offer that I cannot refuse as a DJ.

KEN DOWE (Dallas, TX) Jim. ...Rod Roddy heard me and stopped in at KBOX while on his way to WQXI in Atlanta. I was so impressed.  I'd listened to Rod when he was "Hot Rod Roddy" on KOMA in Oklahoma City. Rod recommended me to Kent Burkhart.  I stayed there for a year until Ron Chapman suggested to the McLendon folk that I was the only guy who had beaten KLIF, so I should return to DFW.  But, this time to KLIF.  So, I'd made it.  And, Russ "The Weird Beard" and I were working together at KLIF. Chuck Dunaway come over to KLIF, too.   Joe Long was at KLIF, as well.  He and Gordon handled the Kennedy assassination on air, hour after hour.  Quite incredible work.  Better (by far) than any network. Years later, I hired Rod to work for McLendon.  (Paying it forward.) I gave Rod a couple jobs when he was out of work.  I always believed in him.  It was as much fun for me as for Rod when he'd call me and say stuff like, "Hey, Kenny!  I'm in my new convertible, cruising through L.A. traffic on my way to tape a few PRICE IS RIGHT shows!  Can you believe I'm in Hollywood!!"

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Hi Jim, John Hale here. I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that I have been getting the newsletter at the alternate email address I sent you a while back. I haven't had the chance to write much lately, due to traveling a lot in my training job with the state. I've also had some minor health issues with my heart. (Some folks I know are surprised to hear that I have one.) I'm getting tested and treatment, and not too worried. BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo, TX) Subject: Obit. Hello Jim: The Tennessean was not my source, but I will now check it out. My country historian close friend in Va (since 1965), who was always in contact w/B. Grammer, says in his last years of retirement, Billy was blind from that eye disease. So sad. His other records included "Bonaparte's Retreat," & "I Wanna Go Home." He was magical on that guitar too. Saw list of inductees this Nov into TRHOF, & was sorry to see your name was not on that list. I am amazed indeed at this obvious oversight. We do appreciate you. Your friend, BOB, at The Southwest Outpost.

TRIVIA ANSWER: On January 7, 1941 the popular old-time radio program Inner Sanctum Mysteries debuts on Sunday nights on the Blue Network (ABC). A memorable trademark of the show is the squeaking door that opens and closes each episode. The scary voice of Boris Karloff adds terror to the show. In fall 1943 the show relocates to CBS. Inner Sanctum's creator is producer Himan Brown. A total of 526 episodes air until October 5, 1952.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Subject: Sending again Jay Fox. Hi Jim and Lacy, Jay Fox was on the air on the ABC OLDIES Satellite Music Network when I was with KMCM 97 GOLD 96.9 FM in Midland, Texas 2003-2004. I was wondering what Jay is doing today. I see his web site is www.jayfoxproductions.com. Jay is a volunteer fire fighter with the Lewisville Texas Fire Department. Leslie Wayne Hodges (www.kzqx.com)

INDY WIND STORM SPAWNS RADIO COVERAGE Tragedy strikes at the Indiana State Fair on Saturday night, August 13, 2011 when a wind blast from Hades knocks down heavy scaffolding that supports the stage. Emmis Country WLHK FM (Hank FM 97.1) sponsors Sugarland as they are about to go on stage when tour manager Hellen Rollens glances up at the sky and decides to keep Sugarland off stage. An instant later, 60 to 70 mph wind gusts topple the roof and metal scaffolding that holds lights and other equipment. That snap decision may have saved Sugarland's lives. Charlie Morgan WIBC-1070 GM springs into action with his live on the scene radio coverage while he stands close to the gridiron as the wind takes it down. Five bystanders die and more than three dozen others receive injuries. This is another example of how important that live on the scene radio coverage really is.

STANDOFF ATOP TV TOWER A 25-year old man who police only identify as William climbs the FOX 23 TV tower in Tulsa, OK during a rain-and-lightning storm and he's still there. Shortly after 11am Thursday, August 11, 2011 employees at FOX23 notice the guy trespassing on the property. He runs to the roof and climbs about two-thirds of the way up the broadcast tower. He is still there for over six days. KTUL-TV CH6 reports that the 25 year old man has a history of mental health problems. The tower is near the Clear Channel Communications studios in east Tulsa. He refuses to come down from his perch. More than 25 police units and fire trucks remain on the scene. After 4 days, a police officer climbs up the tower and leaves him a bag with water and a cell phone. The man says that he has to work out some issues and that he can remain on the tower for a week if he wants. Cops fire pepper spray balls to try to get him to come down, but he just climbs further up the 300-foot tower. Things worsen as severe weather approaches. The Tulsa Fire Department's technical rescue team uses a bucket truck to help him down but high winds force them to pull the bucket back. The longest standoff in Tulsa, OK police history passes day 6. At press time the man is still high up in the tower. Where is Superman when we need him the most?

PAT MCGOWAN (Chandler, AZ) Subject: KVRL-TV. Hi Jim, I'm sure you meant that KVRL-TV Ch 26 in HOUSTON went on the air in August 1971. I would know, part of the original sign-on crew! Was owned by Crest Broadcasting, and the call sign was for the three Schindler brothers Victor, Raymond and Leon. Raymond was the one who ran the store as well as Hurricane Fence Co. We went on the air from an office building across the parking lot from the future studios at 3935 Westheimer Rd. Later in the fall moved everything over during an all night session. Both buildings long gone. Hope you and Lacy are surviving the heat. Patrick McGowan; NCP 3 New Century Productions

LARRY SCOTT (Dallas-Terrell, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1012) August 15, 2011 [Monday] So happy to see The Oaks have finally been accepted as members of The Opry. The Oak Ridge Quartet worked The Opry many times when it was Wally Fowler and The Oak Ridge Quartet. Their piano player, in those days, Livy Freeman is still living and resides in Greensboro, NC. My acquaintance with The Oaks goes back to the late fall of 1958. I was going to embalming school, in Nashville, and working weekends at WAGG in Franklin,TN. Smitty Gatlin was the manager and tenor singer for the group. He brought me a single that I still have. The Oaks were what we call four manin’ it. Smitty sang tenor, Herman Harper, bass, Ronnie Page, baritone and lead and Tommy Fairchild played the piano and he and Ronnie would switch lead and baritone, depending on the song and key. Willie Wynn, from Moultrie, GA joined the Oaks in late December of 58 and made his Nashville debut on The Wally Fowler All Night Singing, at The Ryman Auditorium, in January of 59. I had the pleasure of being there. I’ve known Bill Golden for goin’ on 50 years. That was back when his hair was styled and not a hair out of place. Been knowin’ Duane since his days with The Prophets Qt. out of Knoxville. Duane sang lead and another ol’ boy from Paris, TX, Dave Rorgers sang bass. ls

DANNY MACK MCWILLIAMS (Houston, TX) Jim, I found it amazing that Ed Stern’s letter showed up just below mine, in your latest edition. He was my GM for five-years from 1987-1992, in Uvalde, during that time he became my close friend and my second Dad. He was instrumental in my move to Corpus Christi in the early 90’s. I am so happy he’s home and will be following his progress! Danny

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Subject: Enjoyed visit. Jim, Really enjoyed visiting with you and talking about radio in the days when it used to be good. Thanks for the nice comments in Monday's JRRR.. Best wishes and take some time to get out them old records and listen to them! Bud

BOB POER [ROBERT] (Dallas-Highland Village, TX) Subject: Bud Buschardt. Hello Jim. Good to hear you and Bud had a nice visit. Bud is a great guy and has been a good friend to me over the years. ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

BILLY GRAMMER TRAVELS ON From 1957-58, singer/guitarist Billy Grammer is a regular guest on CBS TV's The Jimmy Dean Show. He is a well-known Nashville, TN guitar session musician. In 1959, Billy lands the #5 spot on Billboard's Country survey with a rousing up-tempo tune, Gotta Travel On. The hot song travels on over to #4 on the Pop map. Grammer's follow up tune Bonaparte’s Retreat is another favorite of mine that finds a place on Billboard's Pop graph in 1959 but for some strange reason misses out on the Country blueprint. However, the song does reach Billboard Country's page by Pee Wee King (1950), Carl Smith (1970) and Glen Campbell (1974). Billy Grammer is born on August 28, 1925 in Benton, IL. He joins the Grand Ole Opry in 1959. Billy Grammer passes away on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at 85. In 1965, he co-founds the Grammer Guitar Company which designs acoustic instruments that remain popular with guitarists. In fact, Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill recently buys a vintage Grammer guitar. Vince remembers: Billy was a really big, friendly soul. He was a guy who could do everything. There’s a kinship between those of us who have been able to garner respect from the musician community and as singers, a sweet brotherhood. He was also a neat guy to get to know.

OAKS JOIN THE OPRY For decades I am a big fan of the Oak Ridge quartet's fine Gospel music. In 1969, my latest flame Betty and I attend the Oaks in concert in San Antonio, TX. They are absolutely marvelous. We meet the Oaks tenor Willie Wynn backstage for a chat. Really nice guy. In the late 1970s when the Oak Ridge quartet becomes a Country group with their new name The Oak Ridge Boys, Willie chooses to leave to form his own Gospel quartet. In summer 1977 when I'm MD/noon-3pm DJ on KTRM-990 the Oaks new Country tune Ya'll Come Back Saloon arrives on my desk. The terrific song is an instant add to our play list. For the next 10 years The Oak Ridge Boys top the Country charts as well as cross over into the Pop surveys. The Oaks still sell out concerts wherever they appear. They win many awards. But their latest achievement may top them all because on Saturday night, August 8, 2011 Little Jimmy Dickens inducts The Oak Ridge Boys - William Lee Golden, Joe Bonsall, Richard Sterban and Duane Allen - into the Grand Ole Opry. President George H.W. Bush surprises The Oaks with a video greeting. Salute!

BUD BUSCHARDT continues as Professor of Radio, Television and Film at the University of North Texas. He also is a legendary Oldies expert on WFAA-570 and KVIL FM in Dallas, TX. His Oldies stash of vinyl records puts mine to shame. A celebration dinner honors Buschardt as he retires from his Program Director command center at ABC Radio Network in 2007. From 1967-68 when I'm a DJ on WFAA-820 and WFAA-570, Bud is a Director at WFAA TV ABC CH8 in my hometown Dallas, TX. On Tuesday, August 9, 2011 long time friend Bud stops by for a visit out here in far west Houston, TX. We take our radio chat down the street to a favorite Tex-Mex restaurant on Memorial Avenue. Bud Buschardt is a class act, real nice fella and a wonderful tribute to radio.

BREAKING NEWS! Mike Fleming of Dateline Hollywood reports that Disney shuts down production on The Lone Ranger movie because of its budget. Armie Hammer is to play The Lone Ranger while Johnny Depp is Tonto. Fleming says: Disney wants to reduce the film's cost from $250 million (some even say $275 million) down to $232 million. But it wasn't the $200 million that Disney wanted to spend. And between Depp, Bruckheimer, and Verbinski, the gross outlay on the film is substantial. The scheduled release date for The Lone Ranger movie is to be December 21, 2012. Stay tuned to this Bat Dial.

Had to wait for surgery until June 24 so I could be completely free of the pneumonia I had in March before my neurosurgeon would do the deed. Following surgery I went into rehab at Parklane West, a rehab facility next to the high rise where we live. I'm having a hard time regaining my mobility and have to spend most of my time getting around in a wheel chair. The therapists are working hard at trying to get me back in shape and I start eight weeks of PT/OT tomorrow. I think you know you do a great service and you have proven the quality of workmanship, so you will always have a place in the Kingdom. I admire the work you do, at times I wonder how you get the energy, also I have tried to redirect questions to you from another broadcaster, since I figured you would be much better at helping him than I would be since you knew the industry, I could only speculate. ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

BEWITCHED RETURNS TO TV? The Bewitched TV series runs from 1964-1972. We fondly remember Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens and her husband Darrin Stephens. Samantha twitches her nose to cause objects or people to disappear or appear. Darrin is first performed by 6' 1" tall Dick York who leaves the series in 1969 because of chronic back problems. The 6' 2" Dick Sargent fills in as the second Darrin. His three seasons in the popular series introduces him to millions of viewers. Agnes Moorehead plays Samantha's flamboyant witch-mother, Endora. Initially she turns down the role in Bewitched, but when Elizabeth asks her in person, she changes her mind. Agnes joins the cast but she doesn't expect the series to last more than one season. But Bewitched becomes a long-running hit. David White is Darrin's advertising agency boss, Larry Tate. Bewitched is set in Westport, CT. In 1968, ABC TV buys its re-runs for nine million dollars. Another of my favorites is Barbara Eden as the beautiful two thousand year old blonde genie by the name of Jeannie in I Dream of Jeannie (September 18, 1965 to September 7, 1970). Larry Hagman plays the confused astronaut Anthony Nelson. In 2005, the big-screen movie Bewitched stars Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell and others but doesn't do well at the box office. In 2011, CBS orders a script for the 2012-2013 season from Sony Pictures Television for a remake of the classic TV series. Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher from the 2005 movie are its new producers. Marc Lawrence will write the script, plus is executive producer.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Subject: Ken Dowe (KLIF-1190). Jim...When I got back to WOHO I put together a composite tape with a bit of our mornings, midday, PM drive and just a few snippets of what Bobby Rich and I were doing on our nighttime "team" show. Three months later Ken called me and said: "We have an opening and we'd like to hire a 'good Yankee jock'...you wanna come to Big D??" My first big market job, joining the Amazing 50,000 watt Texas Giant, "Big Kliff", doing Noon to Three. The station was solidly earning mid 30 percent shares in the Hooper and Pulse ratings. Ken later told me he had a bet with McLendon National PD Chuck Boyles as to whether or not this "Yankee jock" would make it in Dallas. Four months later the Hooper rating for Noon to Three was a 44.3 Share. I have the print out sheet and will scan it and send it to you. Ken won the bet, but I won the best radio experience and found the best teacher a young jock could ever have, Ken Dowe. We had two teenage jocks on the staff at the time: Charlie Van Dyke, PM drive and Hal Martin (Mike Spears), 9-Midnight, both 18. I was barely 20... but we all received a PhD in top forty radio programming working with Ken Dowe and the amazing team at KLIF. Thanks, Ken!! Sincerely, Michael O'Shea

JIM GOUGH [Mr. Texas-actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Jim, here's another Clint Eastwood story. I have an old friend from Austin that I've known since Jr. High days. He has been very successful in radio station management and has owned several small market Texas stations over the years. He owned KAND in Corsicana for a long time. Richard C. Parker Also had a piece of KTEM and still owns one in Louisiana. He's a great guy...we used to pick and grin together and both went to the Navy during Korea. He and his wife have a condo in Carmel where they spend most of their Summers. Once a few years back they were at a social function there and were standing in the buffet line next to Clint. My friend said he had enjoyed Eastwood's movies. Clint said something like.."did you like Space Cowboys, my latest?" My friend said..."sorry Clint, I don't care much for Science-Fiction"! Adios for now, Jim Gough

TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: exits. How come in broadcasting when a person leaves a job, he or she "exits". Seemingly, they never resign or are fired in the trades. They always exit. Or when they win awards, they receive kudos. Who uses those words? Friday, I saw a documentary, "Page One", about The New York Times. Part of the documentary included The Times coverage of the Tribune Co. collapse. Did you ever meet Sam Zell or Randy Michaels?  What a pair of goofed-up characters.

BLAKE LINDSAY (Dallas-Addison, TX) Hi Jim! Jennifer and I are happy that you and Lacy Girl are doing well in this extremely hot summer. Dallas Fort Worth is currently in 2nd place for the hottest summer over 113 years, and unfortunately the driest also. Not the healthiest combo in town. I'll give radio stories some good thorough thinking this weekend Jim, and do my best to send a good one your way. I'll keep it short for you too. I still love to read your column three times each week. When a musician or broadcasting celebrity passes away, I learn more from your research, than anywhere in normal cases. Thank you for putting your passion in to Jim Rose Remembers Radio. You made a fan out of Jennifer also. Blake Lindsay (www.blazinblake.com)

Some of the show's guest stars become household names: Charles Bronson, Peter Falk, Suzanne Pleshette, Burt Reynolds, William Shatner, Robert Redford, Steve McQueen and Robert Duvall. DON IMUS' BROTHER DIES According to the New York Daily News and Radio Ink, WABC-770 morning host Don Imus' younger brother Fred is found lifeless at 69 on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at his home in Tucson, AZ. We often see and hear Fred as a guest on his brother Don's syndicated talk show, Imus in the Morning, on Citadel Talk WABC-770 which simulcasts on the Fox Business Network cable TV channel. Reports suggest that after Fred does not show up for his Saturday radio show, Fred's Trailer Park Bash, that he co-hosts with former western actor Don Collier and Missy on Sirius XM's Outlaw Country, friends find him resting in peace in his trailer. Talent runs in the family because Fred Imus is also a radio talk host and songwriter. Along with Phil Sweet he pens Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius' #1 hit I Don’t Want to Have to Marry You. In 1977, Music City News proclaims it as the song of the year. Fred Imus also appears on the cover of The Fred Book that he co-writes with NY Daily News columnist Mike Lupica. The I-Man credits his brother Fred with the idea to banter back and forth with his producer Bernard McGuirk and engineer Lou Rufino on Imus in the Morning. In 1942, Frederic Wayne Imus is born in Los Angeles, CA. He grows up in the Southwest before he serves in the Army. He later is a brakeman on the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1963, before his brother Don Imus enters radio, both he and Fred write and record the tune, I'm a Hot Rodder (And All That Jazz), on Challenge records. They go by the names Jay Jay Imus and Freddy Ford. Before he moves to Tucson, AZ Fred assists in the operation of Don Imus' Ranch for kids with cancer in Ribera, NM. NEXSTAR SWAPS FOX FOR ABC Nexstar Broadcasting loses its Fox TV affiliation in Evansville, IN. Almost in retaliation, Nexstar ends up swapping its Fox affiliate WTVW TV in Evansville for Gilmore ABC affiliate WEHT TV for $18.5 million. In effect, Nexstar trades its Fox TV station for an ABC affiliate in the same market. Nexstar reports 2010 revenue of $313 million. But it is in a duel with Fox about programming fees or reverse compensation that Fox begins to demand from all of its affiliates as part of affiliate renewal. Rather than pay the fees, Nexstar decides to give up its Fox affiliations in four markets: Evansville; Terre Haute, IN; Fort Wayne, IN and Springfield, MO. Nexstar also sells its one-time Fox affiliate WTVW TV to Mission Broadcasting for $6.7 million. But  continues to operate WTVW TV under a local services agreement (LSA). The deal increases Nexstar's number of ABC affiliates to 11.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Subject: Ken Dowe (KLIF-1190). Jim...I enjoyed reading Jeff McClain's comments about how KLIF PD Ken Dowe influenced his career. My story is similar. While I have thanked Ken personally, I have not publicly declared how important he was to my early career and development: I was doing nights at WOHO, Toledo, Ohio in the late sixties. My mother was a travelling executive for a company and based out of Dallas, listening to Ken Dowe and Granny Emma every morning. While visiting she suggested that I go to meet Ken. I was a bit shy to "bother" a big league radio PD like Ken, being just a night jock in small market Midwest...so my mother made the call without my knowing and set up an "appointment" for me to meet with Ken at KLIF. Like Jeff, I went to the famous "triangle point" studios of Big Kliff a bit nervous that I was interrupting Ken's day. He was gracious, giving and accommodating...visited with me about radio trends, gave me a tour of the terrific facility (midday jock Dave Ambrose on air at the time). As I left Ken asked me to send him a tape of what our station in Toledo was doing. Sincerely, Michael O'Shea

KEN DOWE (Dallas, TX) Jim. Dottie and I would be in Los Angeles on business from time to time and Rod (Roddy) would always take us to dinner. Every time was déjà vu. Rod would enter MORTON's (always Morton’s) and the folks having dinner would erupt into applause and say together: "ROD RODDY! COME ON DOWN...ROD!!" Then, he'd order his favorite drink to go with his steak. A DIET Coke, to which he would add 8-10 teaspoons of sugar. I never got it, either. And so...the ADVENTURE continues. Beats working for a living, doesn't it? Keep up the good work, Jim. Ken

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1009) August 08, 2011 [Monday] Hi Jim; To let you know; Bruce Hathaway is still recovering from back surgery on July 30th but has had complications and has been transferred from Stone Oak Methodist to a re-hab pain management facility. TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: The Fugitive. My favorite too. Never got to see it as a kid because my parents made me go to bed before it aired. So I watched all the episodes (taped all too) when A&E aired them about 1991. A guy in Needles (another hot place) has some of my video tapes. In a latter episode, Robert Keith, Brian's real-life father, portrayed Kimble's dying father. Robert Keith died in 1966 I think. He was in a great number of films as well as television. Nearly all the episodes were on YouTube a few years ago and then removed probably because of copyright infringement. Now someone else is posting them again. Lately, I have been watching "Route 66" on RTV -- 31.4 in Dallas. Another great show.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo, TX) Subject: Music Obit. Hello Jim: I'm certain you are aware of death yesterday A.M. (Aug. 7) of Marshall Grant @ 83 in St. Bernard's Medical Center, Jonesboro, AR. He was an original member of Johnny Cash's Tennessee Two Band, 1954-1980, first as a guitarist, then gaining fame as bassist, with never formal training in music. (He was in AR to participate in the Johnny Cash festival fundraising shows for restoration of his boyhood home in nearby Dyess, AR) Grant was an inductee of Musicians Hall of Fame, 2007, & was Manager of Statler Bros until their retirement in 2004. I know you have much more info on this famous, well respected musician & key component in Cash's band. BOB

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1923, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) orders that all radio station call letters east of the Mississippi river begin with the letter W while those west of the Mississippi river start with the letter K. The only exceptions are those radio stations that go on the air prior to the new law.

CHARLES DRAKE (Ocean-going Mariner in Houston, TX port) Jim, Actually, to use the computer at sea is an infraction of the rules...as it is the Captain's and it is only a courtesy to be used for family correspondence and then only for once-in-awhile use. Since the ships I sail on are under government security bond, and the cargo we handle is classified, we are not allowed to be free with our emailing. This will be probably be the last one you will get from me for some time.

TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Bubba Smith. Smith was also an All-America at Michigan State under coach Duffy Daugherty and played in the controversial 10-10 tie with Notre Dame in 1966 often referred to as "The Game of the Century." At the time, Notre Dame was ranked #1 nationally while Smith's Spartans were #2. For some reason I cannot remember, that game was not on television in Oklahoma City. So I sat in the kitchen and listened to the game on my mother's AM-only radio. How did you like Austin? I was already on my own when my dad was hired to head the Texas Press Association.

KEN DOWE (Dallas, TX) Jim. First, Chuck Dunaway gave me my start in Big D at KBOX. Chuck was fresh from WABC and now was PD at KBOX. He was missing one jock. Somehow he found Mike Ambrose's name...then at KDEO...working with me. Mike said he didn't want to leave California, but he had a friend named Ken Dowe who'd love to be in Dallas. Chuck hired me. (Later, Mike's brother Dave worked for me at KLIF.)

CHARLES DRAKE (Ocean-going Mariner in Houston, TX port) Jim, We stay at sea for a long time in the shipping lanes that are not that frequented and it takes longer to make a haul. The strategy on this is that the security is higher. We also have submarine support. Can't go into this any further than that. Can't tell you the name of the ship or the shipping line. If I were to be caught doing this email right now it could mean my job, or the brig. This is serious stuff and I've been with it for many years. Got to go to late mess. I think Cookie has some steaks for us tonight. It's also movie night. At least they provide popcorn and soda. No alcohol allowed onboard. That's grounds for dismissal and immediate time in the brig. Life at sea, under these conditions is no yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum movie plot! Have a great week. The Old Salt, Charles P.S. Best wishes on your continued success with the newsletter. Great job. And thanks for using my submission.

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: B.J.'s (Facebook) box is too full... Jim, I should apologize. When I saw your mention of his upcoming birthday in the latest JRRR it crossed my mind that you two should be friends on Facebook. I saw that he already had a lot of friends but was hoping that you'd be able to get through. Good to hear that he's a JRRR subscriber. Of his many hit records, one of my favorites is "Mighty Clouds of Joy." Used to hear it on the Mighty 1190. I'll have to think of some radio stories. Always look forward to reading your newsletter. Peace to you & Lacy, David

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Honeymooners debuts on CBS TV network's The Jackie Gleason Show. It films before a live audience. The show begins as a half-hour series on October 1, 1955 at 8:30 pm Eastern Time (during prime time) opposite Ozark Jubilee on ABC TV and The Perry Como Show on NBC TV. It runs with its original cast through September 22, 1956. The Honeymooners is in continuous syndication ever since. Through 1978, Gleason continues The Honeymooners in sketches and hour-long specials. It is one of my all time favorite TV shows. The Honeymooners cast includes Jackie Gleason as bus driver Ralph Kramden at the fictional Gotham Bus Company. His best pal is NYC sewer worker neighbor Ed Norton played by Art Carney. Ralph's wife is Alice Kramden played in the first seven episodes by Pert Kelton. But actress Kelton is blacklisted on the Red Channels blacklist. Audrey Meadows replaces her as Ralph's wife during the rest of the 39 episodes. Joyce Randolph is Ed's wife Trixie plus Alice's best friend. Ralph Kramden is the inspiration for the animated cartoon character Fred Flintstone in the Flintstones.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo, TX) Jim: He (Waylon Jennings) died in his sleep from diabetes related complications; in fact, his left foot was amputated in a Phoenix hospital, Dec. 2001, 3 months prior to his death. Another little-known tragic fact: In 2003, a 22 year old Ft. Worth man reportedly ran a red-light at approximately 80 mph at the corner of Pioneer Pkwy & W. Freeway in Grand Prairie; the accident killed two. Turns out Dallas Morning News said he was illegal immigrant, with no driver's license & no Insurance. Blood tests revealed alcohol registered 0.24 or 3 times legal limit, with trace of cocaine. He was later sentenced to 16 years in prison. The victims were Taylor Ray Jennings, 22, & his 19 yr old girlfriend, Stacey Norman. He was grandson of Waylon! BOB

JAMES MARVELL (Tampa, FL) Subject: Marvell listed by Radio Historian (Great radio news). Hi Jim, thought you should know. I've been sending your reports out and some news folks are picking them up! (supposedly several hundred stations/DJs & industry folks). 'Especially taylored for everything about radio and the history of radio is the report. Jim Rose is a well respected historian on radio facts. Everyone should read his news releases. James Marvell is mentioned in his recent updates. Marvell who has always had a great respect for DJs and radio is in this week's 'Jim Rose Remembers Radio' Click icon here http://news.jimroseremembersradio.com.' Thanks again! James Marvell

BOB

NATHAN DEAL (August 25, 1942 - p) Births to illegal immigrants now account for nearly one out of every ten births in the United States.

MORE ARRESTS IN NEWS PHONE HACKING SCANDAL The Guardian reports that British bobbies arrest former News of the World Managing Editor Stuart Kuttner on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 on suspicion of eavesdropping on phone conversations and greasing the palms of five-oh officers while in the employ of News Corporation's now comatose British tabloid. Police charge that he violates two codes: the Criminal Law Act of 1977 and the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906. These are the same charges that both of the two News of the World editors, Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, face. The gendarme already busts them in connection with the phone bugging scandal. The London Metropolitan Police nab Kuttner on Tuesday when he arrives for questioning. Brooks admits that she uses private investigators, but she has no memory of making specific payments. She passes the buck on to Kuttner who is her underling.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Hi, Jim and Lacy, All of us old radio guys can tell stories, but not nearly as well or as clearly as you...with your photographic memory of every stop in your career. There are a lot of things I remember of my early days in Fort Worth, Austin, Seguin and San Antonio, but not nearly so accurately and graphic as you. You remember the brand names of all of the equipment, the layout of the studios, the personnel and everything about the job. I only remember certain things and certain people, and the rest is history. Tom

JIM BELL [KUFH FM 88.7 Retired 1997-2010] (Lufkin, TX) Hey Jim, You're right. The WORST thing an announcer can do is call attention to an on-air booboo. That Fox news anchor showed her inexperience by apologizing for Patty Shieh’s on-air no-no and calling attention to it. Something like that happened to me when I was at KPRC Radio in the early 70s. As morning newscaster, I used taped stories the overnight guy left for me. Those were the days we would take a stack of clean cartridges into the production room and record our stories straight onto cart. One morning I had a story about an overnight traffic fatality, so I hit the cart button and KPRC's audience heard the overnight guy say a few words, followed by a lot of obscene cursing. He had stuck his label on one of his blown takes. I was taught the worst thing to do in that situation is to call attention to it, because most listeners probably didn’t notice. So I pretended it didn’t happen and continued the newscast. News Director John Davenport heard it, and he wasn’t happy, but he just told me and the overnight guy it just showed why we should ALWAYS audition our news tapes before the newscast. We were lucky we didn’t get fired. Jim Bell

STEVE EBERHART (Dallas, TX) Subject: KGAF in Gainesville. Hey Jim, We just received the yearly Arbitron County ratings for Cooke County and again this year, KGAF 1580 is the number one radio station in Cooke County! This, despite the fact that essentially all Dallas Fort Worth stations come in like a local in Cooke County, plus several out of Oklahoma. ARB says we are #1 12+ total week Monday thru Sunday and #1 18+ as well. To be #1 against 30+ signals out of a major market like that is really amazing.  Needless to say, we are thrilled with the results! If anyone would like to check us out, we stream at www.memories1580.com. Steve Eberhart, owner/operator KGAF "Memories 1580" Gainesville, TX (www.klifhistory.com)

JEFF MCCLAIN (Houston-Cleveland-TX) Subject: Your Barracuda filter bounces JRRR. Jim, I’m not familiar with Barracuda. It may be something my server is using. I use WebWise to host my web site and email account. They use various protection software I’m not aware of. I’ll make sure you are in my address book, maybe that will help recognize your email. I read your news letter religiously and enjoy it very much.

TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: "Another Tear Falls" by Gene McDaniels. Jim, Here is Gene's website: http://genemcdaniels.com/ I would not have recognized him with the white beard.

CHARLES DRAKE (Ocean-going Mariner in Houston, TX port) Subject: Follow Up. Jim, By the way...I just happened to get your latest email, as we are very limited to Internet time out here. They have to use satellite feed and with the many guys on-board, they only have ONE computer hook up. Fact is, they want us WORKING most of the time. Imagine that. We do have off-time, but that is usually spent doing odd-jobs and such. This ain't no pleasure cruise. Food's not bad. That's about all. Pucking overboard helps cut the boredom at times. (That's a bit of Old-Salt humor, there, Jim. Take care.) Charles

TRIVIA ANSWER: Before Barbara Walters, before Katie Couric, there is Nancy Dickerson (nee Hanschman). In February 1960, she becomes the first female CBS TV News network correspondent. She is the first female member of the Washington, DC TV news corps. Nancy is the first reporter to speak to President Kennedy after his inauguration. The night after the Kennedy assassination she has dinner with LBJ. Dickerson is ambitious, beautiful and smart. She dates senators and congressmen. Legendary newsman Edward R. Murrow bestows accolades on her as he gives her advice. She is one of President Johnson's favorite reporters. He often greets her on-camera with Hello, Nancy. Prior to her acclaim, Dickerson is a producer for CBS News in the 1950s.

CHUCK DUNAWAY (Houston, TX) Subject: New Pistola. Ruger is coming out with a new pistol in honor of Senators and Representatives. It will be named the “Congressman”. It doesn't work and you can't fire it.

WILL ROGERS (November 4, 1879 - August 15, 1935) Congress and the Senate, don't scold em. They are just children that's never grown up. They don't like to be corrected in company. Don't send messages to 'em, send candy.
