NBC TV COMMITS HUGE BLUNDER Remember  when NBC TV gets the bright idea to retire Tonight Show host Jay Leno into a prime time TV show on September 14, 2009 with Conan O'Brien as his Tonight Show replacement host? Entertainment Weekly calls Jay's new prime time program television's Biggest Bomb of All Time. After being on the air for only four months, Leno's new prime time TV show ends on February 9, 2010. NBC settles with O'Brien for $45 million to end his contract so that Leno can ease back into his Tonight Show TV spot. On March 1, 2010 Leno returns to Tonight Show as its host. O'Brien inks a deal with cable TV network TBS and his new show, Conan, debuts on November 8, 2010. Then, all's quiet on the western front.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF Once again, NBC TV retires Tonight Show host Jay Leno, this time with Jimmy Fallon as his replacement on February 17, 2014. In 2010, Conan O'Brien is a pitiful excuse for Jay's replacement. But, this caps it all to bring in Jimmy Fallon. When he debuts as host on February 17, 2014 the 39 year old Late Night host relocates the show from its longtime Burbank, CA home near Johnny Carson Park off Bob Hope Drive to its New York birthplace. As Jay Leno's 22-year run on the Tonight Show draws to a close, his tenure is second only to Johnny Carson's 30 years behind the Tonight Show desk. Tonight is #1 among viewers when Jay Leno takes over the seat and it continues to be when he hands it off to Jimmy Fallon with its final and 4,610th show.

TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV NYC, WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO-860/KONO TV San Antonio, TX News Anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Never lived in anything but a tiny, and I do mean TINY apartment while attending UT, working at KVET [1300-Austin, TX] and sporting a wife and two babies. Talk about scratchin and scrapin to get by. We were living right on the edge. Used to  park my 6-cylinder '50 Ford on a hill so I could coast down and pop the clutch to get it started. Couldn't afford a new battery. Willard Deason was paying me $1.50 an hour at K-VET, and wouldn't give me a raise till I graduated UT...after which I scooted to Seguin for 10 months, then to KONO [860-San Antonio, TX] where the fun began. The building boom had not started yet in Austin when I was there in the '50's.

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KLIF-1190, KILT-610] (Houston-Katy, TX) Jim; You mentioned some old western stars and that brought a story to mind. When I was manager of WMFX-fm in Columbia, SC I discovered the head of a big Advertising Agency was a huge fan of old western movie star Al “Lash” LaRue. I located Lash, through Snuff Garrett who was a collector of western information and paraphernalia. Fortunately for me, Lash was living in North Carolina, not far from Columbia, with a lady who owned a beauty parlor. I contacted Lash who agreed to come down to Columbia and hook up with me and the sales rep for a trip to Greenville to pull a huge surprise on the agency guy by an appearance and performance. Lash wanted only 400 bucks and a room for the night to seal the deal. The advertising agency was in Greenville, SC and the head of the agency was having a birthday party on the day we were pulling off the surprise visit. Let it be known I was also a Lash LaRue fan. On the way to Greenville Lash quoted poetry and told Hollywood stories. At the Agency Lash, who brought his whip, did several tricks, posed for pictures, signed autographs and entertained for over an hour. He was dressed in  the black cowboy outfit he’d worn in so many B westerns in the 40’s and 50’s. It was the best surprise I ever arranged. I got an autographed video for my father in law and one for myself and Lash only charges 25 bucks for each video with autograph.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [ex KRCS DJ] (Marshall, TX) Subject: Seattle : Perry Como. I'd like to request this song. This record I was playing on KCRS 550 Midland in 1971. Seattle by Perry Coma number 1 in Midland 79701 WITH A BULLET. The beat and Perry Como I love this. TRIVIA ANSWER: After Diana Ross' farewell show with The Supremes at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas, NV on January 14, 1970, Jean Terrell takes her place as The Supremes lead vocalist. Born Velma Jean Terrell on November 26, 1944 in Belzoni, MS she is the sister of former WBA heavyweight boxing champion, Ernie Terrell, who loses twice to Muhammad Ali. Diana Ross scores solo hits with Ain't No Mountain High Enough (#1-1970), Touch Me in the Morning (#1-1973), Last Time I Saw Him (#14-1973), Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To) (#1-1975) and Love Hangover (#1-1976). Jean Terrell and The Supremes hit with Up the Ladder to the Roof (#10-1970), Stoned Love (#7-1970), Nathan Jones (#16-1971) and Floy Joy (#9-1972).

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI - ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Going Kasual. Yes, Kenny (and The Kasuals) has the hat. I find musicians will talk to me at times and share tips on playing, just not share their book. For some reason they guess I play an instrument even if I don't tell them. Dizzy in his autobiography once said Cab Calloway did not want his band members playing with others, since Cab felt like Benny Goodman managed to steal Flethcher Henderson's ideas that away. I find I like the stations that play musicians while they are still with us to perform live.

CAB CALLOWAY (12/25/1907 - 11/18/1994) Everybody that you could name would join in our audiences from Laguardia on down. Everybody came to the Cotton Club.

TIM TEBOW IN SUPER BOWL In a trade for Peyton Manning to come to Denver, CO John Elway releases Broncos' quarterback Tim Tebow. So, Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow has no NFL contract to play this season. T-Mobile CMO Mike Sievert asks: Who better than Tim Tebow to embody the relevance of contract freedom? Tim Tebow stars in T-Mobile’s first-ever Super Bowl ads in comic skits to promote T-Mobile’s contract-free plans. T-Mobile President/CEO, John Legere, agrees: We thought Tim Tebow was the perfect choice for these spots. And, like T-Mobile, he has the grit, determination and passion for doing the right thing. LISTENER COMPLAINT AWARDS KILT HOST GOLDEN AXE According to the Houston Chronicle, KILT-610's nighttime sports talk show co-host Fred Davis is no longer with the station. Fred co-hosts the show with former NFL linebacker Ted Johnson. Over the weekend, KILT-610 removes Davis' name from its website. Ryan McCredden, CBS Radio KILT-610 program director, affirms that Davis is no longer with the operation. McCredden avows that, along with Johnson, KILT hosts Paul Gallant, Patrick Creighton and Brien Straw will fill KILT-610's open spot while the search is on for Davis' replacement. Fred admits that his dismissal is because a listener files a complaint to KILT-610 that also goes to federal regulators. Davis says: They thought something that I said was indecent to them.

THE BIG 86 SWAPS OLDIES FOR SPORTS Heritage 5,000-watt KONO-860 in San Antonio, TX goes all the way back to the 1920s when radio is in its early stages. In the 1960s and 1970s, The Big 86 KONO is one of the Alamo City's leading radio stations as it does battle with cross-town rival Top 40 KTSA-550. In the 1980s, KONO-860 broadcasts as San Antonio’s One and Oldies Station using their similar 1960s jingles. There is also ABC affiliate KONO TV (later KSAT TV) Channel 12 in the city. For more than 20 years, CMG KONO-860 simulcasts its Greatest Hits sister station KONO FM (101.1). Times change. Many former Top 40 powerhouse AM radio stations switch gears to Sports. Just in time for Super Bowl weekend, Cox Media Group flips KONO-860 to a new Sports authority.

WACO HEADS TO AFGHANISTAN In 1971, on my way back home to Dallas, TX from DJ/co-host Talk show spot on KBAT-680 in San Antonio, wonder how it is to be a DJ on Top 40 WACO-1460 in Waco. Park my 1970 Dodge Charger in front of the WACO-1460 building and wander inside. Robert Weathers, WACO-1460 GM, and I chat about radio for about an hour. Soon, I become WACO-1460's new AM Drive DJ and Program Director. Over 40 years later, on Thursday, January 30, 2014 WACO FM (99.9) reports The Zack and Jim Morning Show live broadcast from the Afghanistan war zone begins on Monday, February 3rd to Friday, February 7th. Along with its popular Country music, The Zack and Jim Morning Show will feature exclusive interviews and shout outs from American soldiers.

FRANK HALEY [News Director KKIM FM 102.9] (Albuquerque, NM) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1273) January 31, 2014 [Friday] Thanks Jim, Did you get my up date on Bill Young. John Rook says he's in a Houston Hospital, supposed to go home tomorrow. I don't know what hosp. My information is 2nd hand, there should be someone in Houston who knows, Jim Carola, Bob McIntire. I just don't know anyone else in the area. Sorry... I think Bill is suffering from breathing problems. Also, Brad Messer told me that Brad has the same problem, and can barely walk, uses a wheel chair to go more than 10 feet. He's on oxygen. Frank

Kendall and I were with Sharon and Bill (Young) at the TRHoF shindig you mentioned. We sat in the back to make an early exit without causing a scene. Possible we were our schmoozing when you spotted Bill alone. I saw but did not recognize Bob Cole at that same function. Take care my friend. You’re a lot more appreciated than you think. If you care to publish the Lash LaRue story...please be my guest. It can take up some space on a slow day. Take care. Chuck

BUD BUSCHARDT [former Director WFAA TV CH-8, ABC satellite radio PD/host] (Dallas, TX) Subject: KULF [790 Houston, TX] Oldies Show. Jim, I never met Hank Moore. Between you and me, I'll skip my PD critique of his performance. I will say that you sounded very good...very personal...very friendly. The show with the (KTRK TV CH) 13 guys was disorganized but that made it fun. (I listened while I was eating dinner tonight.) I probably made those tapes when I was visiting Houston. For some reason I used to carry my old Sony radio/cassette deck around when I traveled. Bud

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S RADIO? WHERE IS RADIO HEADED? We want to know what is on your mind. Let's start a radio revolution.  Give us your opinion about today's radio or whatever is on your mind at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Clones. I have always liked radio stations that had programming not found elsewhere on the dial. The problem is that there maybe a reason for there being so many stations that sound a like. Like I thought Wolfman Jack was very talented but could never figure why so many tried to be like him. Same with KVIL, I liked it but could not see why so many stations wanted to sound just like KVIL. I am not a professional, so if I were voting for others, it would be those that sound original. Like Talk Show Hosts that want to emulate sounding like another  controversial figure. Do I want carbon copies of another personality, no. I know I don't know anything as I have been told before by people. Like at churches where they tell me I don't understand, and I say then can you explain it so I can, or is this just another way of not answering the question. Charles George

TRIVIA ANSWER: The first NFL team that fails to score a TD in a Super Bowl is the Miami Dolphins vs. Dallas Cowboys in 1972 Super Bowl VI. Garabed Sarkis [Garo] Yepremian's 31-yard field goal in the second quarter is the only thing that keeps Miami from a shutout. Dallas Cowboys defeat Miami Dolphins 24-3. Super Bowl MVP is Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach. Probably what takes the edge off of a near shutout is Miami Dolphins' famous undefeated season plus Super Bowl title the following year in Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum when the Miami Dolphins whip the Washington Redskins 14-7.

JOANIE GREEN-GALLO [Longtime Houston, TX DJ/traffic reporter] (Tulsa, OK) Jim, Even Emergency Infant Services had a few "gotchas" for me today...I took over a position I normally don't have on Mondays ~ the regular person was out, so I slipped in and started doing the job. So, while doing her work, I had to train someone to do my Monday job. Consequently, I was interrupted every couple of minutes between 9 and 12:30. Couple that with some clients at EIS who were a tad over the top with their attitudes and demands, I just sort of wiped my brow, bit my lip and thought, "...this too, shall pass..." (sigh)

EMORY AUSTIN (motivational speaker) Some days there won't be a song in your heart. Sing anyway.

NEWS ANCHORS SNOWED IN From Detroit to Philadelphia to New York City heavy snow piles strand motorists. The same is true at WPBN TV NBC CH 7 in Traverse City, MI where more than six feet of snow covers the newsroom's outside windows. Morning news anchor Holly Baker tweets a photo of her view from inside the WPBN TV studios: It’s official! Windows completely covered by snow at 7. On Tuesday morning's newscast, Holly says that the snow completely blocks out the sunlight. We’re a little bit underground, but still - that’s a lot of snow. One of our directors who has been here for 20 years told us it has never gotten this bad before. Guess that meteorologist Al Gore's weather prognostication of global warming is a little bit off the ramp.

RADIO PERSONALITIES GO WITHOUT PAY WFTL call letters move around a bit in South Florida. Originally, WFTL-1400 goes on the air on September 16, 1946 but flips to WFLL-1400 on July 16, 2003. Briefly, in 2003 WFTL holds onto 1420 kHz but quickly flips to WDJA-1420. In October 2003, WEAT-850 becomes all-news WFTL-850 and remains. The Miami Herald reports that 75 employees of WFTL-850 West Palm Beach, FL and Sports radio WMEN-640 Royal Palm Beach, FL are without paychecks since January 1, 2014. The two radio stations' owner is Jim Hilliard's James Crystal Radio Group. Hilliard's GM Steve Lapa tells the Herald that the holder of a $17 million loan has frozen the group's bank accounts, so there's no cash coming out for things like payroll.

Tribune's new property WGHP TV Fox CH 8 Greensboro-High Point, NC adds hour of local news each weekday with 30 minutes to its 12 pm/noon and 6 pm news beginning on February 3, 2014. These additions expand WGHP TV local news to nine-and-a-half hours each weekday. WGHP TV is the lone local news for the Piedmont region.

Chet, a native of upstate New York, came to Boston in the late 60's as a reporter for Channel 5. His talent soon elevated him to the anchor chair. After an extended and distinguished career at Channel 5, Chet was lured to New England Cable News, where he anchored numerous news and information programs until his illness forced his hospitalization last year. Chet was an icon in New England Television, and we miss his smile, professionalism and positive personality. Tom

From 1980 there is a show with you and Hank Moore (Father's Day) [June 15]. From summer of 1980 a show with you, Ed Brandon (KTRK TV Weather guy), and Bob Allen (KTRK TV Sports). Hank was doing a reunion in League city that night so there is very little of him on it. That made the show more enjoyable for me. If you are interested in having the cassettes, I'll be glad to send them to you. It is not often the us DJs find unscoped versions of our shows because most stations just had scanners. Quality on these is not bad for the age and fact that they are cassettes. On another subject, a friend just sent me an article from the Dallas Morning News about the death of singer/songwriter Steven Fromholz. I knew him when I created the music format for KTXZ in Austin. He appeared on some of the live shows we did at the station.  Nice guy. Bud

LYNN WOOLLEY [former KRLD-KTEM-KNOW] (Waco-Temple, TX) Subject: GC. I put some additional information on my Logic Letter today. Gaylon Christie had a big voice and a big heart. When he was 18, he played steel guitar for Clyde "Barefoot" Chesser on KCEN-TV's Bluebonnet Barn Dance. (Remember when local TV stations created programming?) He became a deejay on KTEM using the name "Korn Kobb." It was hokey, but he became a local celebrity. He later went to KTON and KXOL in Fort Worth before putting KOOV on the air. So many of the greats have passed in the last few months. Russ Knight (the Weird Beard) from KLIF and KILT, Chuck Kelly from KOMA and KTEM, Alex Burton from KRLD, and most recently, Larry Lujack from WLS. We miss them all. Their kind will never be back. Radio consolidation has seen to that. Take a stand. Logically, Lynn Woolley (www.BeLogical.com)

TRIVIA ANSWER: Originally, Smokey Robinson writes Being With You about his singing duo partner Kim Carnes. By the time that Smokey plays the tape for producer George Tobin, George discovers that Smokey and Kim are no longer together as a singing duo. When Smokey records Being With You as a solo, it rises to #2. What artist knocks his song out of the top spot? It's none other than Kim Carnes' hit Bette Davis Eyes that steals the #1 position.

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Film I liked. I watched a movie: Starting Out in Evening  with Frank Langella, he is an aging author who finds a young woman taking an interest in his work. I found it an interesting movie. I am not sure when it was released but I found it thought provoking. I like the acting of Frank Langella. The other movie I liked with him, Robot and Frank. I hope you are staying warm and safe there in Houston.

FRANK LANGELLA (January 1, 1940 - p) One of the safest places to be in the world is the stage.

FOX TV SENDS SUPER BOWL TO EUROPE For the first time ever Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia will be able to watch Super Bowl XLVIII live via Fox International Channels. New England QB Tom Brady says that he will not watch the Super Bowl: I could care less. Super Bowl XLVIII with the NFC champion Seattle Seahawks vs. the AFC Champion Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on Sunday, February 2, 2014. The live European broadcast begins at 00:25am (CET) on February 3rd. It's Denver Broncos vet QB Peyton Manning against Super Bowl newcomer young Seattle Seahawks franchise quarterback Russell Wilson. Manning is four-time MVP with the Indianapolis Colts for 14 seasons from 1998 to 2011.

COLLAPSE OF MAINSTREAM MEDIA Cable TV channels in disbelief as to why their ratings numbers plunge. From November 2012 to November 2013, MSNBC loses almost half of its viewers as 45% of its audience disappears. Same is true at CNN when 48% of its viewers evaporate over the same 12 month period. MSM ousts real news reports for celebrity paparazzi. A recent case in point is the breaking news of 19-year-old Teeny Bopper diva Justin Bieber's arrest for racing his yellow Lamborghini submarine on the streets of Miami Beach. What about real news items like NSA spying on American citizens? A good example is when MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell interrupts Congresswoman Jane Harman as she discusses NSA spying to switch to breaking news about Justin Bieber’s arrest for racing.

AGENT FOX CHARLIE CHARLIE CLOSES IN Upon inspection of its tower site, the FCC awards Birach Broadcasting's 13,000 Watt Daytime Only WTOR-770 Ethnic (Punjabi, Serbian, Macedonian and Urdu Radio) Youngstown, NY a $10,000 NAL (Notice of Apparent Liability) fine because the FCC says it fails to enclose its antenna structures. The FCC agent observes that almost half the fence surrounding a tower is on the ground. When the agent tries to lift the fence, the agent finds it difficult because the grass grows through and around the fence. Now get this. The FCC agent says: the gate and fencing support posts for the tower had been removed and are lying on the ground. The antenna structures have radio frequency (RF) at their bases. The FCC says this is a no no.

CHUCK CASHMERE [ex KNUZ] (San Diego-Carlsbad, CA) Subject: Gaylon Christie. What a loss to the local community. Gaylon was one of the finest people I’ve known in radio. He was one of the fellows who referred me to a job at KTEM after I was discharged form the army at FT. Hood. He and the other guys at KTON had played a record I’d cut shortly before being drafted and I'd gone by to thank them for the air play. When they quizzed me about my future I mentioned I'd had a little experience in radio and they suggested I try KTEM where there was an opening. So began my short venture into broadcasting. I didn't last long and migrated back to Houston where I did a little radio with two other part time jobs. I never forgot Gaylon and tried to stay in touch for a few years. He was a real down to earth person, never saw him with an inflated ego and know that he contributed a lot to the local community. RIP Gaylon. You were one of kind.

I have many students out there in radio-land, TV-land, and movie-land that I'm very proud to have known for a short time while they were in the RTVF Department at UNT. Some have stayed in touch and I always enjoy hearing from them. Those with passion, drive, and persistence have gone on to do some big things in the biz. Bud

JO BUSSELL [ex KLDE FM/Mix 96.5/Metro Traffic/Clear Channel/Atlanta's Z93 and V103] (Houston, TX) Subject: KSBJ FM contact. I worked for KSBJ about 11 years ago before Troy and I moved to my hometown of Atlanta...and back after the station suddenly sold. That's the only reason I left because that is one great station to work for. Maybe someday I'll do some radio just for the fun of it. But, no time soon because there's nothing open. I'd love to work for this station in Conroe but they recently had to cut back, too. But I've been talking to them for months. I'd really enjoy that!!

TRIVIA ANSWER: British pop band The Nashville Teens form in Weybridge, Surrey, England in summer 1962. They are perhaps best known for their 1964 single Tobacco Road a top 10 UK hit and a top 20 hit in the United States. The book Tobacco Road is a 1932 novel by Erskine Caldwell about Georgia sharecroppers. John D. Loudermilk writes the song Tobacco Road and first records it in 1960. While playing in Hamburg, Germany (as several British bands of the era do) The Nashville Teens back Jerry Lee Lewis on his Live at the Star Club Hamburg album which is widely considered one of the greatest live Rock and Roll albums ever.

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Sunday, I went to the Balcony Club and heard The Dave Burris Combo, there were only a few there, so I was able to talk to a few of the members when they went to take  a break. I noticed when I asked certain questions they looked at me like why did you ask that, but I only talked about music. There are lots of good talented musicians not played on the radio. Texas Slim has a new CD, That's Who I Am on ITunes. Charles George

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [ex KRCS DJ] (Marshall, TX) Subject: Radio News the Times They R A Changin. Jim, good job on bring us No Brag Just FACT. "No brag, just fact” is sometimes said to be an old Texas saying, but it originated on the short-lived television western The Guns of Will Sonnett (1967). Will Sonnett (played by Walter Brennan) would tell old western stories and often say that he was the fastest gun in the west. Sonnett would then quickly add that his comments were “no brag, just fact.” CafePress.com I Love Texas Of course Texas is a great place! No brag, just fact. Thank you Leslie

TEXAS SINGER SONGWRITER DIES IN HUNTING ACCIDENT Texas music we love in the 1960s and 1970s at Dallas, TX's old folk music coffeehouse The Rubaiyat on McKinney Avenue where we sip our first espressos and enjoy many of the great Texas singer-songwriters: BW Stevenson, Jerry Jeff Walker and Steven Fromholz with his Martin guitar. Good times! On Sunday afternoon, January 19, 2014 Steven Fromholz (68) dies in a hunting accident when a rifle falls and discharges. The Schleicher County Sheriff's Office reports that the accident happens at the Flying B Ranch near Eldorado, TX which is about 40 miles south of San Angelo. Chief Deputy George Ariste says Fromholz leaves to hunt feral hogs. His long gun slips through the bottom of its case, hits the ground and fires. Boom!

RADIO OLD TIMER CALLS IT QUITS Longtime Dickson County, TN radio voice Warren Medley retires from the airwaves after nearly 60 years behind the mic. WDKN-1260 Dickson's Hometown Station  personality's Pet of the Week and Swap Shop are just a few of Warren's several radio programs that go as far back as 1956. In the 1950s, just after WDKN goes on the air, Medley begins his radio program, Saturday Sidelights. Dale Ragan, fellow Saturday morning radio personality and local businessman describes Medley as a personal friend with a long, long lustrous career. I don’t remember when he wasn’t on the radio. He’s been a real plus for Dickson and Dickson County, and always been supportive of the county. At 91, Warren Medley decides to retire from radio.

LIMBAUGH RUSHES OUT OF KFI When radio Super Talker Rush Limbaugh moves it on over from Clear Channel powerhouse Talk KFI-640 Los Angeles, CA to co-owned newly re-branded The Patriot KEIB-1150 (formerly KTLK-1150), Clear Channel shuffles the air times of some of its air personalities. Morning voice Bill Handel moves up one hour from 5:00-9:00 am to 6:00-10:00 am. Bill Carroll changes from 12:00 noon-3:00pm to 10:00 am-2:00 pm. PM Drive home time radio stars John & Ken add one more hour to make it 7:00 pm in their 2:00-6:00 pm spot. Tim Conway Jr. remains on the air from 7:00-10:00 pm. Syndicated air talent George Noory follows Tim from 10 pm to 5:00 am. As Shakespeare says: All's well that ends well.

FRANKIE VALLI FLEES THAILAND'S POLITICAL UNREST Elizabeth Barrett Browning's How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee is a reminder of how many Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons tunes that we love: Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, Rag Doll, Dawn, Working My Way Back to You and many others. In early 1975, on Top 40 KFJZ-1270 in Ft. Worth, TX we spin Frankie's #1 solo smash hit My Eyes Adored You. In April 1975, after I move over to Top 40 KXOL-1360 in Cowtown, we spin his #8 Rocker, Swearin' to God. Frankie Valli still tours the world in concerts. But Valli's event promoter BEC-Tero Entertainment announces on Monday, January 20, 2014 that they have to cancel Frankie Valli's Bangkok concert this week because of Thailand's political unrest.

JACK PARNELL [former Program Director/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Subject: "Daddy Sang Bass". Jim/Lacy: I always thought the tenor voice on "Daddy Sang Bass" was the tenor Statler Brother...thanks for getting it straight. Speaking of Carl Perkins, I'm from Milan, TN., which is 26 miles from Jackson, Carl's hometown, and knew him well. I was working at WKBJ in Milan when "Blue Suede Shoes" first came out, and was at the station the day Bill Haney, who was pd at the station, played it for the first time it was ever played anywhere...it was even Carl's personal acetate recording. Bill and Carl were big friends, and he had played all of Carl's previous records ("Movie Mag", etc). Bill, who passed away about 6 years ago, also gave Carl Mann ("Mona Lisa") his first shot at playing on our station when he was 14. Lotsa musicians were from that area; Eddy Arnold, from Henderson, T.G. Sheppard, nee Bill Browder, of course our buddy, Wink Martindale, from Jackson, and others. Sandwich on beautiful Cape Cod where the sun always shines...except on this Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014, where there's almost a foot of snow...winds gusting to 50mph...chill factor minus 3 degrees. This blizzard comes on the anniversary of the Blizzard of '05, when we got 3 FEET of snow here at this old house...and I was anchoring the news at NECN that January 22nd evening when our 5 to 5:30 newscast set a station ratings record that to this point has not been broken.

HANK [Henry] WILLIAMS [prior KTEM-1300 DJ] (Austin, TX) Steven Fromholz, one of Austin's foremost songwriters during the 1970s outlaw country era, died Sunday from an accident with a firearm, his family reported. He was 68. Longtime friend Craig Hillis said Sunday night that Fromholz died at the Flying B Ranch in Schleicher County, about 40 miles south of San Angelo. A brief statement from the family says: "The accident involved the unexpected discharge of his shotgun as he prepared for an afternoon hunt to address a feral hog infestation that had been menacing the goat population in Schleicher County. Steven died being a rancher, an avocation he heartily embraced with his sweetheart, Susan Buchholz."

GARY DELAUNE [ex KENS TV CH 5 Sports anchor - KLIF-1190 newscaster] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1269) January 17, 2014 [Friday] Hope you are having a healthy new year. I enjoy reading the many comments you receive. True, I also wonder about the Texas Radio Hall of Fame selection and I also wonder how I was ever selected to be a member. But that said; I know there are so many deserving of the honor like yourself and others. I have nominated you twice and Eddie Morris three times. He has been the Spurs audio engineer for about 28 years, has been in Texas Radio for 60 years and you name it, he has done it. John Barger told me a few years ago that Eddie and John Furr both deserved to be in the Hall...John made it...Eddie hasn’t. I also think it would be great to have a web site about the members and what they have done. But that takes time and money. Keep up the good news reporting in this day of so much negativity. Gary DeLaune (www.garydnews.com)

TRIVIA ANSWER: On January 28, 1960 the Dallas Cowboys join the NFL as an expansion team with Tom Landry as its head coach. Dallas Cowboys' first Super Bowl appearance is Super Bowl V on January 17, 1971 with a 16-13 loss to the Baltimore Colts. The Cowboys share the record for most Super Bowl appearances (8) with the Pittsburgh Steelers and most NFC championships (8). The Dallas Cowboys is the only NFL team with a record 20 straight winning seasons (1966–85). Super Bowl Championships (5): 1971 (VI), 1977 (XII), 1992 (XXVII), 1993 (XXVIII), 1995 (XXX). On February 25, 1989 Jerry Jones buys the Cowboys.

GILLIGAN ISLAND'S LOVEABLE PROFESSOR PASSES Five passengers plus one skipper and one first mate set sail for a three-hour tour but end up stranded on Gilligan's Island. SANDY HOOK SHOOTER CALLS RADIO STATION Adam Lanza's shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School causes controversy amongst the anti gun posse. Recently, a question arises: Did Lanza call a radio station before his killing spree? The Daily News reports that it has and verifies the tape of a call Adam Lanza made to Oregon University radio station KWVA-FM, using the name Greg, one year before he went on a shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The Daily News says: Lanza compares “a teenage mall shooter” to Travis, a chimpanzee who rips the face off a Connecticut woman in 2009. At one point, Lanza says: I just don’t think it would be such a stretch to say that he very well could have been a teenage mall shooter or something like that. Is this The Twilight Zone?

DALLAS, TX MAKES WAY FOR THE BERT SHOW Beginning on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 the syndicated Bert Show lands in mornings 5-9am CT on Clear Channel Adult CHR KDMX FM (102.9 Now) Dallas, TX. DUCK DYNASTY'S RETURN SCORES BIG After Duck Dynasty's patriarch Phil Robertson's controversial GQ interview, its fifth season premiere on Wednesday night, January 15, 2014 draws 8.5 million viewers, down 28% from 2013's record telecast which is the top non-fiction program in cable TV history. The one-hour episode, which is the first since Phil's fire-eating GQ parley, averages slightly higher than the 8.4 million who tune into 2013's finale. Duck Dynasty also dips 33% with adults 18-49 to 4.2 million and 35% with the 25-54 bunch to 4.1 million. The fifth season premiere marks the first time that Duck Dynasty suffers a year-over-year loss for a season debut.

To be inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame, you first must be nominated by a fellow broadcaster, your resume, qualifications, experience and credentials are analyzed, then your nomination is voted on by a large board of fellow professional broadcasters. It's an honest, lengthy and complicated process, and I'm proud to have been inducted in 2010.

HENRY [HANK] WILLIAMS [KVET-1300 vet] (Austin, TX) Subject: Larry Monroe passes. KDRP and former KUT DJ Larry Monroe has died. This is a statement from KDRP: We are devastated to announce the passing of KDRP's patriarch, Larry Monroe. He was a pillar of both the Austin and music worlds - a renowned on-air personality, a musician's advocate, and a dear friend to all of us here at KDRP. He's a legend, plain and simple. Larry was with KUT for 29 years. More recently on KDRP in Dripping Springs. He was 71. This news is sudden and unexpected, and at this time we do not have any further information. Please stay tuned to the radio station that Larry helped us to build for updates regarding services as they become available.

LYNN WOOLLEY [KTEM-1400 Talk host former KRLD-1080, WFAA-570, KNOW-1490] (Waco-Temple, TX) Subject: GC. Gaylon Christie was my first radio hero at KTEM and a major reason that I got into the business. He was one of a kind. Many people forget that he also made records with his band The Downbeats and put on major C/W shows in the downtown Temple auditorium. He brought Johnny Cash to Temple on 11/22/63 -- and I was there that night at the age of 13. I still remember what he said to open the show and Johnny sang "Remember the Alamo" in honor of Kennedy. The last time I saw Gaylon was in 2011 when, by total coincidence, we went to the same show in Branson. He recognized me in the lobby and we had a great visit. He was a wonderful radio personality, steel guitar player, and a civic leader. His full story would make a book. RIP, Gaylon. (www.BeLogical.com)

TRIVIA ANSWER: In early 1969, Johnny Cash's Daddy Sang Bass is #1 on the Country charts for 6 weeks. Grand Ole Opry artist Jan Howard sings the line Mama sang tenor. Rockabilly legend Carl Perkins pens Daddy Sang Bass. Carl also writes and sings Blue Suede Shoes. A severe car crash almost kills him prevents Carl Perkins from his appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Instead, Elvis Presley is his replacement and becomes the undisputed King of Rock 'n' Roll. The lyrics to Daddy Sang Bass are true to Southern Gospel Bible Belt family sing-a-longs where family members harmonize and sing each part.

DUKE GILLELAND [Bob Wills Western Swing chat board] (Belton, TX) Subject: Gaylon Christie... Sure hated to hear of Gaylons passing. He was always highly respected in the Central Texas area not only in radio but in all fields he touched. As one of his old DJs Joe Lombardi said “Gaylon believed the community came first, unlike today’s corporate radio mindset. In March 1973, while he was manager at KTON in Belton, they chartered a bus from Belton to San Antone for a big Bob Wills tribute and benefit. Of course, with family and friends, I was on that bus for my only view of Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys together. Good Lord it was great! I always tell folks that I saw it as my senior class trip! Gaylon and KTON 940 AM made it possible. Like others such as Larry Scott, Bill Bailey, Arch Yancey, and Tom Perryman, Gaylon knew what folks and Texas Country & Western music was about. RIP old friend and spin one up there for us! Duke Gilleland; Belton, Texas

NO! TOM MARKER IS NOT DEAD! In 1897, Mark Twain writes in the New York Journal: ...the report of my death was an exaggeration. The Chicagoland Radio & Media website updates an online report about WXRT FM's radio personality Tom Marker in December 2013 about his exit from WXRT FM after 33 years is not correct. Tom Marker indeed remains on 93XRT's airwaves, plus he plans to be a part of WXRT FM going into the future. However, Tom's position changes from full-time to part-time status. Marker continues to host his signature program Blues Breakers each Monday night. But in addition to those duties, he also performs one or two other air shifts each week, as well as being a regular fill-in host on WXRT FM.

SHOOTER CAPTURES CALIENTE MEXICAN During the Christmas holidays, M&M Broadcasting flips Regional Mexican KOOV FM (La Caliente 106.9) Killeen-Kempner, TX to a simulcast of Texas Country KRMX FM (Shooter FM 92.9) Waco-Marlin, TX. Regional Mexican KOOV FM debuts toward the end of February 2013. KOOV FM Shooter covers the western half of the Temple-Killeen radio market. KRMX FM handles Temple's side of the area. Radio listeners also hear KOOV FM simulcast on KTAE FM (107.7) Hico area northwest of Waco. KOOV FM's Regional Mexican format continues on KLRK-1590 Mexia, TX plus on FM translator K267AI FM (101.1) Moody, also in the Waco market.

COOL RADIO ACTIVITY Greenup County Broadcasting flips both of its frequencies. WLGC FM Country (105.7) Greenup, KY/Portsmouth, OH/Huntington, WV spins to Classic Hits (Kool Hits 105.7) vs. Clear Channel WBVB FM (Oldies 97.1). WLGC-1520 Greenup, KY chucks Oldies for News. In August 2013, Greg Reed wants to purchase six outlets in Pittsfield, MA market: AC WSBS-800 Great Barrington, AC WNAW-1230 North Adams, Classic Hits WUPE FM (100.1) North Adams from Berkshire Broadcasting and WUPE-1110, News/Talk WBEC-1420 and Hot AC WBEC FM (95.9) Pittsfield from Gamma Broadcasting but the deal falls through. On January 1, 2014 Great Southern Broadcasting WAMB-1200 Nashville/W257AR FM (99.3) Donelson, TN tosses Adult Standards for Spanglish CHR.

TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV NYC & WBZ TV Boston, MA news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Subject: JRRR. Greetings, Jim and Lacy, Seeing Lynn Woolley's comments in your Sunday edition of JRRR prompts me to ask as he did..."What the h... do you have to do"? I'm assuming he's wondering how one gets into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. His resume is amazingly full just as yours is, and you're not in the Hall either. DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1268) January 13, 2014 [Monday] In answer to Lynn's question about what it takes for a nomination/induction, I am pretty sure that it has nothing to do with what you have done, how hard you have worked, how dedicated you are to the profession, how much difference you made or how many people you influenced. It is all about block voting and getting someone to regionally pull for you and work the phones. I don't know that it could be done different, but it seems like so many of the really important but unknown folks are not allowed into the cool-kids-club and that is very frustrating. Jeff Cunningham, DC, MA; Kyle, TX (www.zoesplaceclinic.com) / (www.myspace.com/drjeffcunningham)

TONY WILLIAMS [former WKY-930/KRLD-1080/Metro Traffic] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) I agree. He's on the money. It was my thought that the board of directors should select the inductees, not a bunch of people who never have and never will be in radio. It's silly. Now that the ceremony is over, I am going to campaign again TRHOF site. After a couple of plugs for you, I also included Lynn (Woolley). I did it on my FB site and on the TRHOF.

MIKE HARTMAN [Elvis Presley impersonator] (Ft. Worth-Joshwa, TX) Subject: My 1 song tribute to Elvis. Jim...It's hard to believe that Elvis would've turned 79 just a couple of days ago. I don't you if I ever sent you a copy of this before; but, in case I haven't, here's a recording of me doing one of my all-time favorite Elvis tunes, "A Mess of Blues".  I used a pre-recorded "track" for the background music. How good were Elvis 45's? The flipside of "A Mess of Blues" was "It's Now Or Never". Is that two good songs, or what? I hope you enjoy my one song tribute.  Later. Mike

JOAN PATE-DAY [late Sam Pate's sister] (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: belated wish. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year a few days late. My Christmas present finally arrived by UPS on Dec 30. Better late than never. Worth waiting for a Casio 88 keyboard from my hubby. I also have an accordion, marimba, (wood keyboard played with mallets and pipes underneath. (at least 70 years old) and a large WURLITZER theater organ white trimmed in gold. It has three keyboards. You behave yourself this new year and may the good Lord bless and keep you and each of your fans safe and sound with no bad dreams and no belly aches.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1959, Berry Gordy, Jr. founds Motown record company in Detroit, MI. Motown which stands for motor and town is also Detroit's nickname. Motown plays an important role in the racial integration of popular music with tremendous crossover success. In the 1960s, Motown comes to be known as The Motown Sound, which is a style of Soul music that has a distinct Pop influence. Gordy sets up two separate record labels (Tamla and Motown) to avoid accusations of payola if DJs happen to spin too many records from just one label. On April 14, 1960 Tamla and Motown incorporate into just Motown.

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Going Kasual. Last week I went to the Balcony Club at Lakewood. I was able to catch a show by Kenny and The Kasuals. I even managed to get a photo of me with him. Do you remember hearing him when in Dallas? Tonight I went and heard Deanna Witkowski at the Dallas Art Museum, was not hearing as well as I would like so I bought 3 CDs of hers on sale and came on home.

TRIBUNE NOW IS AMERICA'S LARGEST TV OWNER On Friday, December 27, 2013 Tribune Company reports that it closes on the purchase of Local TV, LLC's complete portfolio of 19 television stations in 16 markets. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval of the transaction paves the way for a blockbuster $2.7 billion package. This transaction places Tribune Broadcasting as America's largest commercial television station owner with a total of 39 TV stations nationwide. But due to FCC ownership regulations, Tribune agrees to immediately sell off three of the newly acquired television stations to another company. Ed Wilson's new company Dreamcatcher Broadcasting is the buyer of these stations. Ed is previously President of Tribune from 2008-2010.

OPIE LOSES HEALTH INSURANCE The latest big news on radio and TV is the fall out of the federal government's new health care law which places millions health insurance policy holders on the cancellation list. One of the biggest names in radio now joins the estimated 5.5 million people who lose their medical insurance coverage due to new federal regulations.  This week, Anthony Cumia, of the satellite radio duo Opie and Anthony, receives a health care cancellation notice. During Friday’s radio show, Cumia tells listeners that his policy is cancelled and he must find coverage elsewhere after February (2014). A sarcastic Cumia says: Apparently, I must not have been happy with my current insurance. Because, if I was happy, I would able to keep it...but I guess I wasn’t happy.

BILL CONWAY [Former PD/OM Entercom KOIT FM] (San Diego, CA) Subject: Charlie Van, Tony Lawrence pranks. Jim This is a follow-up to Bud Buschardt's comments. While still a student at North Texas, I started as a week end part timer at WFAA-FM in 1970 working for Grady Royster and then weaseled my way onto the AM side as well. Bobby Brock was already in Sales so Tony was Van's partner in pranks. For one they would go into the studio when a Jock was out and switch the monitors and VU meters to audition mode making it look and sound like nothing was on the air. Then watch through one of the big windows as the Jock returned and panicked rushing to the board thinking "Dead Air!" Another favorite also involved the jock leaving the studio. While he was gone Charlie or Tony would squirt shaving cream in the ear piece of the Hotline handset which was below the counter and out of sight. Then later they would call the hotline, the jock would grab the receiver to answer quickly and get an earful...of shaving cream. Often provoking and obscene exclamation the included the name of one of the prankster. Bill Conway

LYNN WOOLLEY [KRLD-KTEM-KNOW-KUT] (Waco-Temple, TX) Sometimes I wonder what it takes. I've been in a small market for a while, but I worked 3 years at WFAA 570, 2 years at KRLD doing mornings with Dick Wheeler, Alex Burton and Frank Glieber. I worked two years at KAAM 1310. I've worked Austin -- KNOW 1490 with Mike Lucas and David Kline. I did PM drive in Austin at KTAP 970. Did mornings in Killeen-Temple at KTEM and KPLE -- morning drive on WACO 100 and WACO 1460. Back in Austin I designed and anchored the morning news block for Ron Rogers at KVET 1300. I've done a political talk show now for 17 years -- now heard on KTEM, KVOP, KCRS, KWBC and KBBW. I've guest hosted multiple times on KLBJ, WBAP and KSEV. I have guest hosted for Mike Gallagher and Roger Hedgecock - both national shows. I was host of the Children's Miracle Network telethon on KCEN-TV for 22 years. I have written 3 books about broadcasting -- one "The Last Great Days of Radio" is a memoir about Texas radio. I write a column (currently) for the Dallas Morning News. I have been guest panelist on CNN. I've won AP awards and a Dallas Press Club KATIE. To my knowledge, I've never been nominated. I repeat. What the h*** do you have to do? Maybe we all should send in our bios. I have very little idea what other folks have done in this business unless I know them and have followed their careers. TRIVIA ANSWER: Tom Brokaw, NBC Nightly TV News anchor from 1982 to 2004, brags that, out of all his accomplishments, he is most proud of his books about the greatest generation who he says are the soldiers that fight in World War II. Brokaw is the only person to host all three major NBC News programs: The Today Show, NBC Nightly News and, briefly, Meet the Press. When Tom Brokaw bids farewell to his TV audience on his last night on December 1, 2004, he says: That's Nightly News for this Wednesday night. I'm Tom Brokaw. You'll see Brian Williams here tomorrow night; and I'll see you along the way.

MIKE BRAUN [ex KWTX-1230] (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: KWTX-FM anniversary. Jim, Here's an upcoming radio station milestone: KWTX-FM (97.5), Waco, celebrates its 43rd anniversary next month. The station began broadcasting on Dec. 17, 1970, from a very small control room (about as big as a walk-in closet) inside "Broadcast Center" at 4520 Bosque Blvd. in Waco. The FM station shared the building with KWTX-AM (1230kc) and KWTX-TV (Channel 10). The radio and television facilities moved from Bosque Blvd. to a new building at 6700 American Plaza in 1986. The Bosque Blvd. building later became Oakcrest Funeral Home. KWTX AM and FM were sold to GulfStar Communications in 1996. The stations are now owed by Clear Channel Communications and are located at 314 West State Hwy. 6 in Waco. KWTX-TV was sold to Gray Communications in 1999 and remains at 6700 American Plaza. Mike Braun, Fort Worth (KWTX-AM/FM, 1975-1979)

The newest Cumulus NASH entry is the former Rock WRKN FM (92.3) which leap frogs above alligators into New Orleans, LA. Rock WRKN FM (92.3) is now Cumulus Country NASH FM 92.3. Mike also would love to hear from Country radio DJs who are in need of a new place to hang their Stetsons.

CHINESE GRAB HOLD OF NY TIMES More and more every day, well to do foreign businesses and businesspersons gain control of American companies. Pretty soon most American trade establishments will outsource overseas which leaves their employees on the dole. Wealthy Chinese tycoon, Chen Guangbiao, who makes his fortune in waste management, mulls a bid to take over the New York Times. Chen wants to purchase the New York Times for $1 billion. Multimillionaire Guangbiao who describes himself as China’s most charismatic philanthropist sighs: the New York Times doesn’t want his cash. Chen says that Arthur Sulzberger Jr., publisher of the Times, sends him a memo that says the Times newspaper is not for sale.

POST STAMP PRICE INCREASE ON ITS WAY Are you happy with your USPS mail delivery? Is your mail carrier like a good neighbor? Unhappy with the price of a postage stamp? Well, Uncle Sam's snail mail carrier pigeons claim that if we allow them another increase in the price of a postage stamp the service will be better. Hey, I have a bridge to sell you in San Francisco Bay. Can remember not too long ago when the cost of a postage stamp is 3c. Better buy a stash of Forever postage stamps for your letters to your favorite radio personality quick because on January 26, 2014 America's 1st class postage stamps will leap 3c from 46c to 49c each! This increase is supposed to generate an additional $1.8 billion in revenue to make up for earlier losses.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In the late 1980s, while he walks through the streets of Manhattan, a man approaches CBS TV News anchor Dan Rather and he shouts What's the frequency, Kenneth? at him. It remains a mystery for the reason of the man's bizarre behavior toward Dan Rather. But this freakish experience encourages Alternative Rock group R.E.M. to write a song with the same name in their 1994 album Monster, but, for some unknown reason, they choose to not include Dan Rather's name in its lyrics. It peaks at #21 in Billboard's Hot 100, #9 on UK Singles Chart, plus is the first song to debut at #1 in Billboard Modern Rock Tracks.

NYPD MUG JOURNALIST We all remember TV videos of Occupy Wall Street squatters who take over city parks with their tents, litter and filth. According to The New York Daily News, on the anniversary of the invasion of the Occupiers, Chris Faraone, a journalist from Queens, claims that as he lawfully files a report about the illegal intruders for the Boston Phoenix, cops stop, tackle, batter, search, arrest, detain and imprison him without cause. Faraone says that he attempts to identify himself as a member of the press but Empire State gendarme ignore his pleas. So, Chris files a law suit against New York City, the NYPD plus 10 cops. Faraone claims county mounties deny him access to a lawyer and directed and/or threatened by the defendants to cease his journalism/reporting activities in the city.

WHO WILL MERGE WITH TIME WARNER CABLE TV? After the retirement of current Time Warner Cable Chairman and CEO Glenn Britt in January 2014, Rob Marcus replaces him as TWC's new Chairman/CEO. On Monday, December 9, 2013 as he speaks to a packed house of industry professionals at the UBS sponsored 41st Annual Global Media & Communications conference in NYC's Westin Hotel, TWC's new CEO Rob Marcus does an about-face on a recent Bloomberg News article that quotes him as saying he is the right man to steer TWC through its current M&A situation. He adds that according to unnamed sources TWC would be willing to do a deal in the $150 to $160 per share range. Marcus says that his comments are taken out of context in order to generate 'a sexy headline'.

CHARLIE OCHS (Tampa-St. Petersburg, FL) Subject: Bob Cole. I enjoy reading your (newsletter) although not as frequently as I would like. A year-and-a-half ago I decided retirement was a bore and went to work as a Financial Professional at Prudential Financial and I miss reading it daily. Today you touched my memory with mention of Bob Cole and his time at KIKK-96-FM. As you know, I was doing the morning show at KIKK when he came to us from Ft. Lauderdale. I think he was no more than 19 or 20 years old with the voice of an Armed Forces Radio Network newscaster. The studios were still in the old, run down building in Pasadena TX. Manager Al Greenfield had moved everything else to the new building on Gulfton in SW Houston so, if you remember, maintenance was not a high priority at the studios...including pest control. Bob was deathly afraid of spiders. A few days after he started and shortly before handing off to me at 6:00 am, a particularly large and healthy arthropod fell from the ceiling onto the console in front of him while he was live, on the air. The scream from that "big-boy" voice was a unique wake-up alarm for thousands of KIKKers. Congratulations on the success of JRRR. Keep up the good work. Charlie Ochs

MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshwa, TX) Jim...Just a comment or two about Ray Price. As a Christian, it was comforting to read a statement Mr. Price made, knowing his condition was terminal. This isn't exactly word for word, but real close: "I love and appreciate my fans. I love Jesus. I'm at peace. I'll see you again someday". Several years ago, Ray Price gave a performance at the Joshua High School auditorium, in Joshua, TX...about 4 or 5 blocks from where I live. If my memory serves me right, I had already committed to a singing job that very night. How sad it was to drive right by that auditorium. I never had the honor of seeing him in concert, or meeting him. When I look back, all I can think is "what if". Ray Price's version of "Danny Boy" is my all-time favorite song of his. RIP Ray. Mike

GUYANNE MCCALL [new DJ on KHLB FM - Country singer Darrel McCall's daughter] (Mason, TX) Mr. Rose, So glad to know that you are a supporter of traditional country music as well! I am honored that you know my father and I work hard to make him proud so it’s all about the REAL stuff to me such as Ray Price and Faron Young! Tracy Pitcox taught me everything I know about radio :) I am currently an artist on his "Heart of Texas" Records label (under the name Guyanne McCall)...but I like many have a real job and luckily that will be at KHLB. The new owners are in the process of re-doing the studio and we are currently running on air with no dj while all of this construction is being done. I do not know yet when it will actually be ready but I will let you know when I do! I will also pass on your interest in the other dj's as well. Much Thanks! Guyanne McCall Dannheim

DR. BRUCE NELSON [KFTX FM 97.5 GM/AM Drive DJ Retired on 12/31/2010] (Corpus Christi, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1265) January 03, 2014 [Friday] Best of 2014 to you Jim, Sorry to hear long time Radio Ranger Col. St. James temporally on the beach but I feel this Houston radio Icon will land on his feet!!! Also saw your note on the passing of Gordon Hinkley in Milwaukee, he was a contender to be reckoned with during my tenure in the early 70's a PD of WMIL. Dr. Bruce Nelson (www.kftx.com)

TRIVIA ANSWER: From 1951-53 in the thrilling Ziv Television series Kent Taylor as Boston Blackie tools around Los Angeles, CA in his exotic convertible with his best gal, Mary (Lois Collier), plus his faithful terrier companion, Whitey, as he cracks crime cases always one step ahead of Inspector Farraday (Frank Orth). Jimmy Buffett's Pencil Thin Moustache, plus The Coasters' Searchin' both mention Boston Blackie's pencil thin moustache.

BUD BUSCHARDT [former Director WFAA TV CH-8, ABC satellite radio PD/host] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Charley Van... I know Bobby Brock and Charlie were close friends. Maybe it was Brock who was his prankster friend. I'll have to ask Tony next time I see him. It might have been the three of them that pulled pranks on George, the record librarian. When WFAA-FM was live in 1967, Rob Edwards was the P.D. When Tom Perriman took over, Grady Royster was his right hand man.  By the way, Rob Edwards (from Houston) ended up in L.A. Bud

DAVID CARSON [Rockin' Down The Dial: The Detroit Sound of Radio] It was a simpler, less sophisticated time, but what a great, fun time it was.
