GRAMMY WINNER DEPARTS The Recording Academy describes Manuel Galbán as a dynamic musician with a unique guitar style. We hear the Grammy winning Cuban guitarist on recordings by Los Zafiros, Grupo Batey and the Buena Vista Social Club. Galbán becomes an ambassador of Cuban music throughout the entire world. His enduring talent covers several music categories: calypso, bossa nova, bolero and Rock. During the 1940s, The Buena Vista Social Club is a members' only club in Havana, Cuba that features dances and musical activities. It becomes a popular location for musicians to meet and jam. In the 1990s, nearly 50 years after the club closes, it inspires a recording by Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder. They join traditional Cuban musicians, some who are veterans of the club during the height of its popularity, to record a tune called Buena Vista Social Club. The song becomes an international success. With the passing of this fine Cuban guitarist, the music world loses a passionate and legendary artist. His music lives on forever in the hearts of his family, fans plus all of us who are moved by his talent.

DOVE AWARD WINNERS INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT Jeff & Sheri Easter receive two 2011 nominations for Country Album of the Year (Expecting Good Things) and Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year (Workin’ on a Road). In 2010, they win a Dove Award for Southern Gospel Song of the Year for Born to Climb. In Los Angeles, CA they celebrate their second lifetime Grammy nomination. On Friday, July 8, 2011 around 2:00 am, the group travels on US Hwy 82 in Lewisville, AR when a driver enters their lane which causes a collision. They had just left their appearance in El Dorado, AR and are on their way to Mesquite, TX. Sheri remembers: We were on a long stretch of road on Hwy 82 headed into Garland, AR. Our driver, Tyler, noticed one headlight coming toward us in our lane. He veered to avoid hitting the driver. All of a sudden, the driver of the car made a hard right hitting the side of our bus. Jeff says, We called 911 and Madison, Kyle (drummer), Tyler (driver) and me went to check on the man driving the car. He was fine and out of the 9 people involved in the wreck, there were no injuries. Police arrest the uninsured driver of the car and charge him with DWI.

NETWORK NEWS ANCHOR EXITS In 2010, CBS TV replaces Harry Smith, along with Maggie Rodriguez and Dave Price on CBS's Early Show. Just six months after that, CBS TV News veteran Harry Smith vacates the Eye network to join NBC TV. According to broadcast news sources, Harry joins Brian Williams' new NBC primetime show. In an email to his staff on Friday, July 08, 2011 CBS TV news president David Rhodes says: Harry Smith has been a fixture here at CBS News for a generation. In my own recent time at CBS News I enjoyed working with Harry as he reported from Egypt, Libya, Malta and Japan. NBC confirms that Smith is joining the Peacock, but has no comment about his new position at Williams' still-yet unnamed primetime hour. NBC will issue an announcement on Monday.

LEN HART (Geneva, Switzerland) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#991) June 27, 2011 [Monday] Jim, Just a quick line to bring you up to date. When last we corresponded, you had mentioned that you would be interested in my writing a short article about Houston radio. As I have not yet written the article, I hope you don't think I am ignoring you. I was, in fact, honored. But --I hope your offer is open ended. At the moment (in spite of some computer glitches) I am at last wrapping up two screenplays, one of which has already been well-received in Hollywood. Of course, like radio, there are no guarantees in the film biz. But my attitude about films is not unlike my approach to radio: if you have a good product, folk will buy; 'if you build it (and it is good) they will come' :) By the way, one of my scripts will have highly fictionalized references to the Houston radio scene circa the late 1970s. Keep up the great work, Len (http://classicacts.blogspot.com/)

KEN DOWE [KLIF-1190 PD/DJ] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Death of Cousin Linnie. Hi, Jim...Long time buddy Don Sundeen was kind enough to be sure I saw your posting on the death of Cousin Linnie. Linnie was a wonderful person who loved to embarrass me greatly every single time I saw him...with his standard line: "Hey! Looka here. Y'all come over and meet my man Ken Dowe! Ken gave me a job in the '60s...on not just a "white" radio station, but one of the greatest stations of all time. 'Big KLIF in Dallas! THE MIGHTY 1190!' And, he never said a word about color. He just said they needed a good jock, and he wanted me. How 'bout that?? Then, I overhead a fella talkin' to Ken in the hall way right after I went on the air at KLIF." "But, Ken.  Cousin Linnie is a black man." Ken was walking off, ignoring the fella, when he said: "Is he? Linnie? Thanks for letting me know. I hadn't noticed." Maybe I said it, and maybe I didn't. But, I did feel like that about this good man. And, for decades...Ole Linnie just wouldn't let it go. I'll miss him... Keep up the good work, Jim. I look forward to reading you every day. Your friend, Ken

Mike 'Linwood “Cousin Linnie” Henderson, longtime Dallas DJ, dies at 74 By Joe Simnacher Published July 8, 2011 10:50 PM Linwood “Cousin Linnie” Henderson was a household name to radio listeners during his long disc jockey career in Dallas. NEW CALIFORNIA LAW CAUSES AFFILIATE EVACUATION Democratic Governor Jerry Brown signs a new California budget that includes a requirement that out-of-state Internet retailers must collect California sales tax. He brags that his bill produces an estimated $317 million a year in new tax revenues. Amazon warns that the new tax law presents a loss of $152 million in California revenue. Amazon instantly terminates all 10,000 California affiliates effective Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Paul Misener, Amazon's vice president of global public policy, protests: This legislation is counterproductive and will not cause our retail business to collect sales tax for the state. Rebecca Madigan, executive director of trade group Performance Marketing Association, fears: Many of about 25,000 affiliates in California, especially larger ones with dozens of employees, are likely to leave the state. The Sacramento Bee reports that California-based eBay which is a big name in the state has also grown deeply concerned about the effects of the proposed legislation. California lawmakers thought they were targeting Amazon.com, the out-of-state giant... It turns out eBay Incorporated, California’s own golden child of e-commerce, isn’t so thrilled about it, either. George Runner, a member of the Board of Equalization, criticizes Brown's new tax law: Even as Governor Jerry Brown lifted his pen to sign this legislation, thousands of affiliates across California were losing their jobs. The so-called 'Amazon tax' is truly a lose-lose proposition for California. Not only won’t we see the promised revenues, we’ll actually lose income tax revenue as affiliates move to other states.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Subject: Cuzzin Linnie. Hi Jim...We appreciate your posting email remembrances of the beloved Cousin Linnie Henderson, KLIF-1190, circa late sixties and early 70's. "The Cuz" was a unique on-air performer and a warm, considerate, giving man, with a heart of gold. I was on staff at KLIF when Ken Dowe hired Cousin Linnie in '69, then (I) became KLIF's program director in 1970...and it is Ken to whom I give all the credit for breaking the radio color barrier. But in those days I don't recall one single utterance about hiring a black dee jay at a big mainstream radio station like KLIF. I just recall that Linnie brought a great attitude, terrific energy and all around likability, transcending any color coding. My thoughts go to his wife, Lovee and family. Linwood Henderson was a class guy who will be loved and remembered by many for a long time. Michael O'Shea; Bellingham, WA

TV PREDATOR CHASER BUSTED Dateline NBC's TV series To Catch a Predator has behind the scenes cameras that capture footage of males who travel miles to meet in person underage girls and guys who they encounter on the Internet. But when the show's host Chris Hansen along with his camera crew strut out from behind closed doors we hear all kinds of excuses of why the obvious predator is there. Well, undercover cameras catch Predator's host Chris Hansen cheating on his wife with WPTV TV reporter Kristyn Caddell, who is 20 years younger than he is. The National Enquirer says that Hansen has an ongoing affair with the young lass for about four months. Chris lives in Connecticut with his wife and two sons. But recently he spends time in South Florida on a story about the disappearance of a local man who is missing since 2006. A source tells the Enquirer that Hansen and Caddell first meet in the VIP area of a West Palm Beach club and there was an immediate physical attraction between them. The Enquirer receives a tip about the alleged affair. So they set up a sting operation to catch Hansen in his alleged relationship with the young, blonde TV reporter. Last weekend, the Enquirer films the two lovebirds as they enjoy a romantic dinner before they spend the night together in her apartment. And the beat goes on.

RONALD REAGAN TURNS 100 YEARS OLD The world remembers President Ronald Reagan as The Great Communicator. But some of us may not recall that from 1934-1937 former President Ronald Reagan in his young life is a radio announcer. According to www.rockhawk.com/Iowa.htm WOC-1420 Davenport, IA is the first commercial radio station west of the Mississippi River and in 1932 it is the first radio station to hire Ronald Reagan. He moves on up to bigger and better things on 50,000 watt clear channel NBC affiliate WHO-1040 in Des Moines, IA. In 1937, Ronald Reagan's film debut is in Love Is on the Air where he plays a radio announcer. Ronald's acting career extends from 1937 to 1964. The former President is born on February 6, 1911. He dies in 2004 after a struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher sighs that Reagan brought millions of people to freedom. On July 4, 2011 a statue to commemorate President Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday unveils in London to coincide with America's Independence Day celebrations. Neither former First Lady Nancy Reagan, nor former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher are able to attend the event. The Independent reports that former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former British Foreign Secretary William Hague are there to sing the praises of the Hollywood actor turned leader of the free world. Hague says: Statues bring us to face to face with our heroes long after they are gone. Hail to the Chief!

TRIVIA ANSWER: On June 7, 1955 The $64,000 Question with host Hal March debuts on CBS TV as the first big television quiz show. During its 1955-56 season it is the #1 rated scheduled primetime program. In 1955, the show wins an Emmy for Best Audience Participation Series (Quiz, Panel, etc.).

DAVE DWORKIN (Minneapolis, MN) Subject: Elkins Institute. Scott (Gilbert) forwarded me your letter as he knew I would find it of interest. Yes, my name is Dave and I'm an Elkie. I went to the Minneapolis outpost of Elkins in 1972. By this time FM was in full swing and only directional AM's needed a jock with a first class license. But I wanted to work at a specific AM/FM combo, so I got my first ticket. The Dallas location closed its doors in 1990. It took me six years to reach my target station (KQRS AM/FM) but I never worked anywhere that required that license again. Regards! Dave Dworkin - Owner The Radio Mall

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

LONGTIME DALLAS, TX RADIO DJ EXPIRES During the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s Gordon McLendon perfects Top 40 radio on his powerhouse The Mighty 11-90 KLIF-1190 as it completely dominates the Dallas, TX airwaves. The Old Scotsman gets credit for establishing many radio innovations. His KLIF-1190 is also the first Top 40 radio station in America to hire a black DJ. In 1969, a young black fellow by the name of Linwood Henderson becomes KLIF-1190's all night DJ. He establishes himself as Cuzzin' Linnie and becomes a very popular air personality. In 1974, Cuzzin' Linnie moves over to 105.3 MOR KXXK FM (ex KMAP FM). For many years, he is heard on Soul 73 KKDA-730 (ex KPCN-730) until 1998. Since last year Henderson is ill. Recently, his care giver Maryann tells us: ...just to let you know that Linnie is back in the hospital and declining rapidly. His organs are starting to shut down and they are just going to keep him comfortable until something happens. Friday morning brings us the sad news that Linwood Henderson passes away in his sleep on Thursday night.

MORNING RADIO SHOW SHAKEUP Lana Hughes and J.P. Pritchard's morning news show on KTRH-740 is the longest-running in Houston, TX. Lana and J.P., who both are 63, host KTRH's four-hour morning news block for 27 years. In 2009, they are inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. But in radio all things must pass. On Tuesday morning at 5 am their replacements, Matt Patrick is the new host along with former Denver, CO talk show host Lois Melkonian as news reader hit the local airwaves. The new show's format is supposed to mirror Fox TV News' Fox and Friends. KTRH-740's current lineup includes syndicated political conservatives Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. The 52 year old Patrick is in radio since 1979 on stations in Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland and South Bend, IN. His resume says that he likes to engage, entertain and discuss local and national events from a conservative viewpoint. He brags: I'm excited to be in Houston. It's not easy to be replacing somebody who has been on the air for so long...I'm excited to be part of that.

JUDGE SUES TV REPORTER The Nashville Business Journal reports that Nashville General Sessions Judge Daniel Eisenstein files a law suit against News Channel 5 WTVF TV and its investigative reporter Phil Williams for libel. The City Paper reports that Eisenstein's suit differs with a July 2010 story by Williams: Is Another Nashville Judge Under Ethics Investigation? Eisenstein disputes that story. He argues that Williams pursues the story in retaliation for the way Eisenstein presides over Williams' two parking tickets issued in May 2010. And the beat goes on.

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: memories. Mike Shannon seems to be a young man who cares about others more than himself. He helped the family with Sam's (Pate) memorial and did a wonderful job. Lots of foot work. Sorry to hear of Dick Mock. He was one guy you either liked or didn't. (if you worked with him) You were speaking of the shooting of reporters reminded me of when Sam was surprised with a car bomb. He got into his car to go to the station and when he turned the key, wham. Just barely burned as the bomb was placed in a place it did not do much damage.  Scared him enough he started carrying protection. This happened shortly after Kennedy was assassinated.

FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Ft. Worth-Hurst, TX) Subject: Ballot for TRHoF. Hi Jim, Thought I'd let you know I've put my ballot in the mail for the TRHoF. Yes I did vote for you. I certainly hope this is your year. A lot of names I know and many I don't know. Not many from small markets. I think there really should be a division, with large medium and small market inductees. Some of us labored long and hard in small to barely medium markets who might never be recognized. I read with interest Lee Anderson's remarks about the FCC visit. Same thing happened to me. I was working nights at KIOX in Bay City one night when the FCC inspector just walked in. The last person leaving the building had left the front door open and he just walked in. Yes back then you could leave doors unlocked and be safe. When I saw the badge I thought he had said FBI and I wondered "Oh, dang, what I done". He calmed me down and while I called the manager (Jeff McClain, I think) he started looking at logs and such. Only problem we had was a meter that was out on our directional array. Two hours later he was on his way and the rest of my career I never saw another inspector. More memories as I think of them. Fr. Bob Tomlinson; Fort Worth, Texas

DAVID PERKINS (Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Happy Birthday America, and hello Jimbo and Lacy. Long time no talk to, so. We've got a new addition to the Perkins family. No not another granddaughter (we got six now) but a new little brother for "old man" Benny -who is six. Another mutt Mini Schnauzer mix, Max, 13  pound rompin' stompin' shoe and house chewer, was rescued by us at the Fort Worth Humane Society. I'm teaching him to howl like Wolfman Jack so loud Lacy will sit up and wag her tail. Wish we had more room. I'd take on some of those orphans from Alabama and Joplin. Hope everything is well down in Houston. Heading down close to Brazoria to visit Mother in Law. Life is good. Take care. David Perkins (WBAP and KPRC Charlie Brown)

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

SHOTS FIRED AT TV NEWS VAN News happenings often place radio and TV reporters in harm's way. Have many tales about where the KBOX-1480 mobile news unit takes me on the streets of Dallas, TX in 1971 and 1972. But never experience any gun play while on duty. Not so for WCVB TV ABC CH5 reporter Kimberly Bookman in Boston, MA. Her news van is fired upon as she and a photographer finish up a story about a gunfight that happens earlier. According to the Boston Herald as the two pack up their gear after a report on the late newscast, they hear gunshots. Two bullets hit the WCVB TV van. Neither of them receive injuries. Police do not believe that they are the targets of the gunfire. Andrew Vrees, WCVB news director, issues a memo to staff that states police do recover the firearm which they believe is used in the shooting. The firearm is under investigation for fingerprints and DNA. Cops at the scene report that the gun they find on the street has fired at least nine shots.

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Subject: The Five Americans. Jim, Mike Rabon, former leader of the 60's Rock 'n' Roll group "The Five Americans" has written a new book called "High Strung". I'm sure many of your DJ readers played "I See The Light", "Western Union" or their other hits. The book deals with how the group got started, a crooked manager/record company owner, his lack-of-talent want-to-be-a-singer son, no royalties for the group, personal appearances, sex, drugs, groupies, but mostly with how Mike lived through a life of fame, alcohol, and drugs. The book is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and www.thefiveamericans.com where you can also see old videos of the group. Just thought you might want to pass this along someday when you have some extra space in the letter. Thanks, Bud

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#991) June 27, 2011 [Monday] Hi Jim! Just responding to a couple of posts on the last JRRR. Comedian (and now rap artist) Jamie Foxx was indeed from Terrell, TX.  In fact, the city's Bradshaw Street has been co-named "Jamie Foxx Way," and the commemorative red street sign there also has a football helmet insignia with the number "12" on it, to celebrate Foxx's athletic contributions to Terrell High School (where he was known under his real name, Eric Bishop.) Jamie Foxx Way is just off Moore St/Hwy 80, not far from the old KTER studios.

CNN SPORTS ANCHOR PASSES Nick Charles, CNN's very first sports anchor, dies at 64 of bladder cancer on Saturday, June 25, 2011. CNN says that he battles the disease since 2009. Nick starts as a CNN sports anchor on June 1, 1980, which is the same day that the network begins. For almost two decades he co-hosts Sports Tonight with Fred Hickman. His TV career takes him to Baltimore and Washington, DC before CNN hires him at their launch. Jim Walton, Nick's field producer in his early days and current president of CNN Worldwide, says: His passing is a loss to CNN, to the sports world and to the fans and friends everywhere who were with him to the end of his extraordinary life.

FIRST FCC INSPECTION One very cold, dark November or December morning in 1972 when I'm PD/MD/AM Drive DJ on KBER FM-AM in San Antonio, TX a guy in a fancy three-piece suit enters the control room. Figure that he is just another record promo guy but why is he here so early in the morning? Tell him to wait while I get out of the break. Turn around to look at him. He lunges forward and flips out his ID holder. This is not The Man from Glad. This is the real thing. He is a government FCC inspector! In all my years in radio this is a first for me. In an FBI voice he says call the GM and Chief Engineer and tell them to get here pronto. So, I call the owner, A.V. Bamford, who also is the GM and tell him that we have been raided by the FCC. Faster than I can say you are busted both the GM and the CE arrive at the scene of the investigation.

The dude even wore a shoulder holster. Yep. I was face to face with "The Man". He knew he had scared the…outta me and asked for my transmitter log. Thank God I had it caught up that day...other days not so much. He said "Who's the engineer on duty?" I told him I was. He laughed and said "Woman engineer? There ain't no woman engineers!" So I called the FCC Agent a "male chauvinist pig" which was our word back in the day. I pointed to my First Class license on the wall, remember those? The Agent was so taken aback by my smart mouth that he left laughing. Next day there were two dozen roses in my production room and a note from "The Man" asking me to kindly have dinner with him. I did. We got married soon after. That was Husband #1. I refer to him as Fed-X.

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#991) June 27, 2011 [Monday] Hi Jim! Bob Crowley asked about Brent Clanton. Unfortunately, the news he heard is true...Brent's deal with KIKK (650) in Houston ends on June 30 as CBS is changing the station's format. Brent was my boss as well in recent years, and an upstanding man and informative radio talk show host. I'm sure he'll have no problem finding another home for his morning program in the Houston area very soon. Thanks, Jim, for all you do, and take care!  Mike Shannon (www.knus99.com/)

NORMA ELLIOTT (Houston-La Porte, TX) Subject: Where do you read JRRR? Hi, My name is Norma Elliott and I live in La Porte, Harris County, TX. Harris county is the same county Houston is in. La Porte, TX is probably about 25 miles from the east side of Houston. I am trying to get some information about the radio station in Pasadena, TX in the 60's which, as I have read, Roy Lemons was there at that time. Is there any way I can get an email address for him? You have a very interesting website. Enjoyed reading it.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1953 the filmed anthology series General Electric Theater begins. At the beginning of its 1954 season, Ronald Reagan is its host through its end on September 16, 1962.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo, TX) Jim: We will now exchange cigars! My records show Waylon (Jennings) was youngest DJ in America @ 12 when he started in radio. He & Jessi (Colter) met at JD's club in Phoenix (Mesa), where Waylon performed regularly. At his death on 2/13/02, they lived in nearby Chandler, but he is buried in Mesa. On Valentine's Day, 2/14, Jessi received as usual candy & flowers (ordered earlier) from Waylon! They were indeed a dynamic pair. I was at Tennessee Theater in Nashville in mid 60's for premiere of his movie, "Nashville Rebel", hosted by Dick Clark. Their son, Shooter Jennings, is a recording artist & lives in L.A. Best to you & Lacy...BOB

WAYLON JENNINGS (June 15, 1937-February 13, 2002) So I'm not very popular here with those inside the system, as you might guess. I never wanted to be.

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

OH...JUST ONE MORE THING One of our most popular TV shows features the lovable Los Angeles police homicide detective Lieutenant Columbo in his rumpled tan raincoat. Columbo begins in fall 1971 as one of three 90-minute shows on the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie. It alternates with McMillan and Wife and McCloud. Columbo becomes the top show of the trio. By the time that Lt. Columbo arrives on the scene we TV viewers already know who commits the crime. But our enjoyment comes as we watch how Columbo pieces together the clues. His phrase, Oh just more thing completely unravels the criminals. Peter wins four Emmys for his starring role in the television detective series, Columbo. In 1959 and 1960, he also receives Academy Award nominations for movies. Falk suffers from Alzheimer's disease plus advanced dementia that intensifies after his series of dental operations in 2007. At a conservatorship hearing in 2009 a doctor testifies that Falk suffers from dementia and cannot remember the Columbo role which makes him famous and dear to our hearts. Sad to report that Columbo's star Peter Falk dies at 83 at his home in Beverly Hills, CA on Thursday evening, June 23, 2011. In a more than 50-year acting career that spans Broadway, movies and television, Peter Falk appears in more than 50 movies. A co-star in one of his movies, Gena Rowlands, tells the Times: Today we lost someone who was very special and dear to my heart. Not only a wonderful actor but a very great friend.

MUSIC PRODUCER'S HOME CATCHES ON FIRE Famed Nashville, TN record producer Cowboy Jack Clement's Belmont area home catches on fire. Clement is in the back yard when his girlfriend’s son hears smoke detectors going off upstairs. A few minutes after 2 pm, the fire crew arrives. Happy to say that everyone, including Jack's three cats, Fred and Ginger and Edwina, get out of the house safely with no injuries. Inside his house are recordings and other memorabilia from a lifetime of producing records. His favorite guitar, a Gibson J200 that he buys in 1951, is saved from the blaze. Sun records owner Sam Phillips hires him as a producer. At Sun Jack engineers and produces records for Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and Charlie Rich. He pitches She Thinks I Still Care to George Jones which lands at #1. He writes Charley Pride's first two hits, Just Between You and Me and I Know One, plus he produces Pride's first 13 albums on RCA records. Clement writes several songs for Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Ray Charles, Carl Perkins, Bobby Bare, Elvis Presley, Jim Reeves, Jerry Lee Lewis, Cliff Richard, Charley Pride, Tom Jones, Dickey Lee and Hank Snow. In 1973, Jack Clement is inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

LEE ANDERSON (McAlester, OK) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#989) June 22, 2011 [Wednesday] Jim...(KBER-1150) Was nothing but one trailer with studios and an office..studio doubled as production room. The log cabin to the right as you walked out the door had just been completed. KBER had been on about a month. I had heard about but never seen an FCC guy. KBER's directional required a first class license operator to be on duty. I didn't have one. But an engineer was on duty most of the time. I think his name was Dick Jones. We signed on at 7am. He went to restaurant up on Roosevelt Ave to eat breakfast...7:30am. Man walks in suit, flashed ID card and scared me so bad ... He looked around a couple minutes. Said he was going to go get coffee and told me the engineer better be there when he returned. When he returned he called that engineer every name in the book. Made a believer out of me...Lee

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

GLEN CAMPBELL HAS ALZHEIMER'S On Wednesday, June 22, 2011 the 75-year-old Glen Campbell reveals to the world that he has Alzheimer’s disease. This incredible revelation completely shocks us long time fans of Glen Campbell. It's difficult enough to realize that he is now 75 years old but that he has Alzheimer’s is completely beyond belief. During my many years as a DJ on top radio stations all across TX quite possibly the most memorable and pleasant radio interview that I ever have is with Glen Campbell in 1969 on KBUC FM-AM in San Antonio, TX when he is at the height of his career. During that year he sells more records than the Beatles. He has the very popular The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS TV. Glen is a most gracious and refreshing person. The KBUC control room window looks out on the very busy Commerce Street. By the middle of our interview automobiles stop still in front of the radio station blocking traffic. Attractive females rush up to the window for a glimpse of their idol. After the interview ends he has trouble trying to exit the control room because the hall is jam packed with lovely females. Campbell's hit tune Rhinestone Cowboy can very well be my theme song. Since 1962, Glen Campbell releases nearly 60 record albums. His Gentle on My Mind is a five-time Grammy Award winner. Sad to say that Alzheimer's has no cure. According to a National Institutes of Health task force: It strikes one in 8 people age 55 and older. Our deepest prayers are with Glen Campbell as he struggles with his illness. Despite his adversity, Glen Campbell says that he plans to complete his farewell performances during fall 2011. Pop & Hiss reports that his farewell tour supports his new album Ghost on the Canvas that is due out on August 30, 2011. Glen Campbell's new record album features guest artists Chris Isaak, Dick Dale, Billy Corgan, Brian Setzer and Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen.

FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#988) June 20, 2011 [Monday] Jim, Jim Bell is correct about -- Howard Finch -- I worked with Howard for 5 years at KTRH, he was a class act, had wonderful stories and kept us in stitches all the time. He was one of the reasons radio used to fun. No voice tracking. He said the first Tonto on radio was an Irishman who was afraid of horses. In personal appearances, the Lone Ranger rode a white horse, and Tonto ran beside his paint horse. What a sight.

JIM GOUGH [Mr. Texas-actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#988) June 20, 2011 [Monday] On the Lone Ranger story...My favorite radio show of the 1940's was "The Lone Ranger". It came on three days a week around supper time. My Father and I loved the show as we thought Brace Beemer had the greatest voice on the air! The tricks I learned from that show helped me greatly when I narrated over 60 'western' audio books over the years. They are like a one-man radio show. I had to play all the characters and the announcer. When I was in Detroit in the late 60's doing Dodge commercials, I actually worked with character actors who had played on the Lone Ranger radio show. What great memories! Too bad today's kids don't have that kind of heroes! Jim Gough

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) At KXOL (1360), we had a music director named Scott Reese. He was a really nice guy and got along well with everyone. It turns out that Scott was very close to his family and he brought his mom, dad and sister to the station to see what it looked like. It turns out that the production director, Dave, had a bit of a drinking habit. To say the least he could pack away the wine. But Dave was a cheapskate. He bought large quantities of Boone's Farm wine. So here comes Scott on a Saturday afternoon with his family and out staggers Dave with a full half gallon of wine. Scott nervously laughs "are you going to drink that all by yourself?" Dave answers, slurring words like crazy, "Wy not, uh dunk the firsss one by muhsself." TRIVIA ANSWER: On January 19, 1953 a national event occurs when Lucy Ricardo gives birth to Little Ricky on I Love Lucy. Ironically, the star of the show Lucille Ball gives birth to Desi Arnaz, Jr. on the very same night.

JOANNE BUSSELL (Houston, TX) You are spot-on when you said basically that corporate radio "the suits" have turned radio into a train wreck along with so many lives. But you do know that CC is going bankrupt and Citadel just sold off 14 stations? The bigger they are the harder they fall. When they do, people like us will buy those stations and make them the kickers they should be. Talent will return to the airwaves and they'll hire old...like me to whip them into shape and to rock them purple. The listeners will return to radio, maybe even flush their iPods down the toilet, we'll stage a bonfire to burn the automation units; then we'll sell it for scrap metal. Live + local = listeners. Simple equation. But it makes their suits explode. Hey, this is FUN!! Talk to you soon...Sincerely, Jo Bussell, Houston (Former Oldies KLDE, Mix 96.5, Metro Traffic, Clear Channel, Atlanta's Z93 and V103)

HOUSTON'S THE ZONE GOES BUST Cox Media Group ends the Alternative Rock KHPT FM The Zone 106.9 format in Conroe, TX just seven months after it begins with a simulcast of sister Classic Hits KGLK FM The Eagle 107.5 in Lake Jackson, TX. The simulcast begins with the Monday morning, June 20, 2011 Dean and Rog Show on KGLK FM. Each FM signal rimshots opposite north and south sectors of Houston. Mark Krieschen, CMG-Houston VP, brags that the simulcast creates the largest coverage area in southeast Texas. Combining the format on both frequencies will super-serve the entire metro market and beyond and offer our brand to a wider listening audience. The 107.5 FM signal has very strong coverage in the Southeast region of our market while 106.9 FM is robust in the Northwest. From 1998-2000, KGLK FM 107.5 simulcasts northeast of Houston with KKTL FM 97.1 (now Country Legends 97.1 KTHT FM). In November 2010, KHPT FM 106.9 flips from 1980s/1990s Oldies The Point to Classic Alternative. That format moves on over to HD2 and online only.

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Dallas visit. I was in Dallas this week and had the opportunity to visit with two great friends who have been a part of the Dallas news scene for a half century. Former KLIF and KRLD-TV newsman Roy Nichols will be 87 this month...He is partially blind, doesn't leave the house but is as mentally sharp as when he reported Dallas news events including those days of November 1963 when he was at Parkland Hospital when JFK died. It was a great reunion. My other stop was at the home of James R. Leavelle, the detective hand-cuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald when Jack Ruby performed his avenging act. We stayed until sundown reminiscing and remembering. What a great guy and we'll meet again this summer to do a TV interview for our files of historical memories. J.R. will be 92 this summer and is indeed an encyclopedia of that era in our history. Gary DeLaune (www.garydnews.com)

JOHN BASS [KLIF-1190 Newscaster] (Tyler, TX) Subject: Texas Radio Hall of Fame Nominees for 2011. Jim, When I was at KLIF (1190), my mom could listen to the station early when I was on the air with Charlie and Harrigan...even though on paper their pattern showed that it stopped short of the Tyler market. To this day, I can get a slight signal of KLIF in certain parts of the city. But again...too much static and fading to enjoy listening. That's "progress" I suppose! P.S. Someone needs to tell those youngsters to read Bill Young's book to learn the facts and the truth! I finished reading it last night...having gotten a copy from Barns & Noble after you mentioned it to me.

JOANNE BUSSELL (Houston, TX) Barry and I listened to 60s On 6 on Sirius XM until 6 this AM. And we took turns hitting posts & walking intros. Radio tales like no one could imagine. All of a sudden I glanced out the window and the sun was coming up. It was 5:50! I have never had such a good time and I told him I felt as if I was 13 again listening & remembering where I was when I heard those songs. We're both crazy with makes for great radio talent, as you know. So, I'll put some short versions together for you within the next day or so. Hey, I have endless free time since the Big Layoff. 16 months...nothing. But Barry has some well-paying voice work for me very soon. Jo Bussell, Houston (Former Oldies KLDE, Mix 96.5, Metro Traffic, Clear Channel, Atlanta's Z93 and V103)

TRIVIA ANSWER: On July 7, 1952 the term anchor is first used to describe Walter Cronkite's role at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. The conventions also are the first nationally televised convention coverage. CBS News provides 139 hours of televised convention coverage.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo, TX) Subject: Fred Foy. Jim: Your reader, Frank Haley, mentioned earlier he thought the great Lone Ranger announcer/narrator, Fred Foy, had died. Indeed, his bio-file in my archives show Frederick William Foy  passed away on December 22, 2010 @ age 89. He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame, 2000. He wrote his autobiography in 1986, "Fred Foy From XYZ to ABC: A Fond Recollection." He also released a 45-min CD/cassette of memories, "Meanwhile, Back at The Ranch." Quite a story indeed. BOB

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

THE BIG MAN IS NO MORE As we follow Bruce Springsteen's long time saxophonist in the E Street Band from his massive stroke on June 12th and two brain surgeries soon after, our prayers are that he receives a remarkable healing. But we now are in ultimate sorrow at his untimely death. The 69 year-old Clarence Clemons passes away on Saturday, June 18, 2011 almost one week after he suffers a massive stroke at his home in Florida. In an attempt to save his life, doctors perform two brain surgeries but sadly his time has come. Clarence, who is a 40-year member of the E Street Band, is the heart and soul of the band. The New Jersey-born legendary Rock saxophonist appears on Springsteen's 1973 debut album Greetings from Asbury Park. Two years later, he is on the cover of Bruce's Born to Run album. A sax is one of my absolute favorite musical instruments. With the nickname The Big Man, the 6'4" tall former college football player never misses an E Street band appearance. His last performance with E Street is in December 2010. In April 2011, Clemons lures the crowd with his sax to the tune of the National Anthem at the Florida Marlins' season opener. Clarence's final live TV rendezvous is on American Idol's closing show on May 25th when he joins Lady Gaga on her single Edge of Glory. Clemons also appears in the song's new video. He is featured on two tracks on her latest album Born This Way. Clarence Clemons' survivors include his fifth wife, Victoria, and four sons.

REPORTER RESCUES MOO THE CAT A South Strabane, PA family spends eight seemingly helpless days and nights struggling with the fact that their kitty cat is stuck high up in a tree. The Carr family cat, Moo, climbs a 40-foot tree in the woods near their home but somehow cannot make it back down. The family puts in a call to the local fire department but they say that their trucks cannot navigate the hilly area to free their kitty cat Moo. Family member Jessica Carr sighs: ...lost a lot of sleep over it. You can hear him crying outside the window. He’s been out there for eight days without any water or food. On Monday, June 12, 2011 the Carr family gets the idea to call WTAE TV to see what they can do to rescue their kitty cat Moo. The ABC affiliate sends reporter Sheldon Ingram out with a crew. Like Superman, Sheldon comes to the kitty's rescue. He climbs a tall ladder and lures Moo into his arms with a bag of treats. Kitty cat Moo is back home safe and sound.

TRIVIA QUESTION: When does the landmark series You Are There with Walter Cronkite first appear on our TV screens? The answer appears below.

RED JONES (Washington, D.C./Reston-Centreville, VA) Subject: Edited story. Very early in my 63 year career I was told by the General Manager "Kid you ain't got it. Get another profession." That lit my fire and I made it through another 9 successful years to become PD of KILT (610) when we "owned" Houston radio. A jingle salesman came in one day to "see the PD" and guess who it was? The (ex) GM who asked "What are YOU doing here?" We were loaded with jingles (and he was loaded too) as he passed away from the booze not long after that. Morale: Watch who you criticize. They might pass you by in the home stretch. Red Jones; Georgia Radio Hall Of Fame

JIM GOUGH [Mr. Texas-actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Joe Bowman ('the straight shooter") and I were close friends for many years in Houston. As a matter of fact he did his fast draw act at many of the gigs my band, The Cosmopolitan Cowboys, played around town. Joe was an amazing guy, fast as lightning with his pistols, wonderful at card tricks and even learned how to make his own boots! He made a special trip to Gene Autry OK to visit with me one Summer and did a great exhibition. I have a signed picture of him in my office with Robert Duval. Joe taught him to pull his pistols for "Lonesome Dove". We were scheduled to take a show to Jordan once but had the trip cancelled due to riots there. I miss him a lot. JIM BELL (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Lone Ranger Voices. Hey Jim, There's a Houston connection to the story of The Lone Ranger announcers. The late great Fred Foy definitely put his indelible stamp on the famous intro, on radio and TV, but he was hardly the first. Foy got the job in 1948, 15 years after the show began at WXYZ in Detroit. The first announcer was Brace Beemer, from 1933 to 1941. Beemer moved over into the title role in 1941, when the original LR, Earle Graser, was killed in a car accident. Between '41 and '48, a string of local Detroit radio people did the announcing. The best of those was a guy we all remember -- Howard Finch -- who went south to work in Houston radio and TV in the 1950s. I worked with Howard at KTRH in the '70s, and believe me he had some great stories to tell about his own "thrilling days of yesteryear" working with the Lone Ranger live radio crew in Detroit. Jim Bell - Lufkin, TX

JOHN BASS (Tyler, TX) Subject: Texas Radio Hall of Fame Nominees for 2011. Jim, The golden days of radio are gone forever...but we were blessed to have been born just at the right time to have lived and experienced those days. My...how times have changed!!! So...let the youngsters have their turn at it. But they cannot and will not ever experience what we were blessed to have experienced back in the "golden days of radio" during "our time in the saddle"!

BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) I read Jo Bussell's comments in the latest edition of JRRR...and she was absolutely accurate. I heard her air checks and she is very good. She went through the wars all of us radio old timers went through and has persevered. And as for being a very dear friend, that is very true. Barry Kilgore; CCIC Radio/TV/Film/Print/Art

TRIVIA ANSWER: On February 1, 1953 Walter Cronkite begins his Classic You Are There CBS TV series that features dramatic re-creations of historical events. Its last broadcast is on October 13, 1957.

JOANNE BUSSELL (Houston, TX) Subject: I love this site!! Hey, your reply made my night. I'll write some stories of my crazy life. But what a good ride it's been. I don't regret a second and we know that a second is an eternity on the radio! Barry (Kilgore) loves my radio tales! Boy do I have some doozies! I'll write them up for you and will absolutely LOVE contributing to your website. It's the best one I've found. Any way you could put up airchecks on the site? That would attract loads of fans. Believe me. I have searched & searched the Net for airchecks; particularly Barry's. He says they're in a box someplace & he has no idea where. I have a big box of reels (only you & I remember those ;-) and cassettes. But I truly, truly want some tape of Barry. What a genius. Truly amazing. Jo Bussell, Houston (Former Oldies KLDE, Mix 96.5, Metro Traffic, Clear Channel, Atlanta's Z93 and V103)
