AL JAZEERA COMES TO AMERICA Current TV founded in 2002 by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and businessman Joel Hyatt goes on the air at midnight EDT on August 1, 2005. On January 2, 2013 Gore sells Current TV to Qatar-based Al Jazeera who plans to shut it down with a new New York-based channel called Al Jazeera America. Surprise! Surprise! Qatar TV comes to America! At 3pm on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 Current cable channel becomes Al Jazeera TV. But AT&T U-verse drops Current TV before it becomes Al Jazeera. Time Warner Cable, second-largest U.S. cable operator dumps Current TV after its sale to Al Jazeera. Comcast, DirecTV, Dish and Verizon do carry the Emir of Quatar's new cable channel Al Jazeera (AJAM).

RUSH IS IN HANNITY IS OUT Rush Limbaugh, who celebrates 25 years on the air is America's #1 radio Talk host, tells us not to worry. El Rushbo remains on Cumulus radio stations. According to Radio Ink, when Premiere Radio Networks agrees to unbundle Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, this leaves Sean out in the cold to fend for himself. When Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey claims that the talk format does not bring in the big bucks that he thinks it should, he pastes a code red sticker on it. America's #2 Talk host Sean Hannity's fee may be too high. So, the Cumulus 2014 lineup places Michael Savage in Sean's seat. As we report in Monday's issue of JRRR, America's #1 Talk host Rush Limbaugh will leap through the hoops from WABC-770 to Clear Channel WOR-710 in America's #1 radio market, NYC.

SEAN HANNITY'S NEXT MOVE In August 2012 Clear Channel buys WOR-710 which is New York City’s oldest radio station and one of its last independents to survive. CC already owns five FM music radio stations in NYC. Clear Channel's purchase of WOR-710 might provide a Gothom City home for talk programs which it owns through its Premiere syndication. At the end of 2013 Rush Limbaugh leapfrogs from WABC-770 to WOR-710. Will Sean Hannity replace WOR-710 morning host John Gambling whose family is on NYC radio since 1925? When Hannity's contract terminates at the end of 2013, Michael Savage is his replacement on Cumulus radio. Will Sean Hannity flip from WABC-770 to WOR-710 in The Big Apple at the end of 2013? Only the Shadow knows. Stay tuned to this Bat channel.

FOX NEWS CHANNEL LOOSENS ITS ROOTS America's #1 TV talk host, Fox News Channel's Bill O-Reilly, continues to hit his stride with a new contract. The network's #2 talk host, Sean Hannity, doesn't fare as well at the Fox studios in New York. Although Fox News signs long-term pacts with Megyn Kelly, Bret Baier, Shepard Smith, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Greta Van Susteren where are they going to place Sean Hannity? Don't mess with success. When Fox TV's popular daytime TV host, Megyn Kelly, moves to the 9 pm spot on Fox News, where does that leave Sean Hannity and Greta Van Susteren? Observers believe that Kelly will bump Greta Van Susteren off Fox TV because her show has the lowest-ratings. But Greta growls that she ain't going no where. Don't touch this Bat channel.

MIKE BRAUN [ex KWTX-1230 Waco, TX] (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: KWTX anniversary and Buddy Bostick birthday. Jim, An application for KWTX was made in May 1941, but the start of World War II imposed equipment and construction restrictions, delaying the station’s approval and completion for five years. KWTX radio’s inaugural broadcast was May 1, 1946, at “1-2-3 on your dial” (1230 kc) from its original second-floor studio at 108-1/2 South 6th Street in downtown Waco. The station was a Mutual affiliate and aired a mix of local and network music, news, sports and drama. The station moved to a new facility at 4520 Bosque Blvd. in Waco around 1952. This building would become known as Broadcast Center, and after the building was expanded, it shared space with KWTX-TV (Channel 10) in 1955 and KWTX-FM (97.5) in 1970. The South 6th building is still occupied by other tenants, although the second floor, where the KWTX offices, studio and control room were located, has completely changed. Best wishes, Mike Braun, KWTX-AM/FM, 1975-1979

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S RADIO? WHERE IS RADIO HEADED? We want to know what is on your mind. Let's start a radio revolution.  Give us your opinion about today's radio or whatever is on your mind at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Jim, I get a kick out of watching my Scottie have dreams while he's sleeping. I think he's dreaming about chasing cats and squirrels, and he kinda barks in his sleep, rather than talking in his sleep, when he's having a dream. Reference your question about doing traffic, I'm working the late shift weekends for Total Traffic, the traffic branch of Clear Channel. I provide reports on DFW traffic for Sirius satellite radio, and Houston traffic for News 92 F-M (KROI) overnight Saturday and Sunday nights. It's just enough work for me, since I'm a retired guy, and I enjoy doing traffic because it's one of the last things left in broadcasting these days where you can use some personality and individuality. Give Lacy a big hug for me, and we'll talk again soon my friend. John Hale; McKinney, Texas (Retired, but not acting like it!)

TRIVIA ANSWER: TV pioneer Sylvester [Pat] Weaver as NBC's program manager creates the Tonight Show. Weaver, who is father of actress Sigorney Weaver, is the innovator of the Spectacular which gives  NBC's owner RCA the advantage to increase the sale of TV sets. Participation advertising with multiple sponsors, also gives more control of the shows to the network. Sylvester [Pat] Weaver passes away on March 15, 2002.

DUKE GILLELAND (Belton TX) Subject: Comment On "New" Country Article... Jim, Your note on Less Classics More New Country should have read Less Classics For NO Country! Thank God there are still a few stations that have the guts to remember those who built the roads that nashville music travels on today! Duke Gilleland; Belton Texas

KEN OLSON [President/Chairman/founder of Digital Equipment Corp. 1977] There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.

BIG CHANGES AT CUMULUS Rumors persist that syndicated Conservative Talk radio hosts Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity may disappear from Cumulus radio stations over contract renewal disputes. Rush says not to worry because nothing will change on his end. Politico.com asserts that Cumulus may drop Sean Hannity from its stations, but it probably will continue to air Rush Limbaugh on virtually all of his current affiliates. Michael Savage tells listeners that he is the heir apparent to Hannity’s timeslot on Cumulus’ stations and predicted he will move to afternoons by the end of the year. Cumulus hires possible replacements for its Conservative Talk stations. Clear Channel buys WOR-710 New York City for a possible affiliate for Rush and Sean in radio market #1.

LESS CLASSICS MORE NEW COUNTRY It's out with the old and in with the new on Classic Country KHLX FM (93.1) Sacramento, CA. In the July 2013 PPM, KHLX FM has a 1.9 share. Radio Insider reports that Ken Charles, VP/Programming of Clear Channel Sacramento registers 931Country.com, 931NewCountry.com, Country931FM.com and NewCountry931.com which indicate a taste for New Country as opposed to Classic Country on KHLX FM (93.1). KHLX FM competitor KCCL FM recently relocates from 92.1 to a stronger 101.5 signal. A move to New Country makes KHLX the third Sacramento radio station with New Country to join CBS KNCI FM (105.1) and Entravision KNTY FM (The Wolf 101.9).

BRIGHAM YOUNG STATE DOES THE RADIO SIDESTEP In January 1996 Cumulus debuts its Classic Hits The End format on KENZ FM 107.5 Salt Lake City, ID. In 2005 Cumulus moves Classic Hits KENZ FM The End to 101.9. In April 2010, it flips Classic Hits The End to 1990s Hits. But in December 2010, Cumulus revives its Adult Alternative format on 101.9. On Friday, August 16, 2013 at 12pm, Cumulus relaunches KENZ FM as Classic Hits 101.9 and picks up the syndicated Bob & Tom Show from sister Classic Rock KBER FM 101.1. KBER FM afternoon hosts Mick & Allen move their Freak Show back to mornings. KENZ FM's new format places it in competition with Bonneville Classic Hits KRSP FM The Arrow 103.5 and Clear Channel duo Oldies KODJ FM 94.1 and Rock KAAZ FM 106.5.

FAMILY BATTLE OVER GOSPEL SONG FLIES AWAY On Thursday, August 15, 2013 the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals orders more hearings in the fight over who owns the rights and royalties to Albert Brumley Sr.’s classic 'I’ll Fly Away'. Judge Boyce Martin says that a trial judge is wrong when he excludes two articles that quote Brumley about where he works when he writes I’ll Fly Away. Albert Brumley Sr. writes the song in the late 1920s while he picks cotton on his parent’s Oklahoma farm. He copyrights the song. In 1960, he renews the copyright. But in between those times he sells the song to Hartford Music Company. A few years later, he buys Hartford Music's copyrights. Brumley's children argue that they are due a share of the royalties to the song.

CHUCK DUNAWAY (Houston-Katy, TX) I went to two lunch bunch gatherings in the beginning, but haven’t been in some time...My health gets in the way or I have other plans that cannot be broken. The 50’s were nice for me too. I just returned from a trip to OKC where I was videotaped stories (2 hours) for the Oklahoma Museum of History. The video and accompanying pictures will be available at the Museum in what is to be called The Chuck Dunaway collection. While there I also videoed for web site dedicated to the History of Channel 4 in OKC because I did a TV show there that was quite popular in the 50’s. I was so honored because I was born in Oklahoma. Kendall and I flew up on Saturday and back on Sunday and had time to have a brunch with Danny Williams’ widow who keeps the memory of Danny alive in Oklahoma. She was a wonderful and supportive wife for Danny and made his later years joyful. As you know Danny was a true Radio/TV legend in the Sooner state. Have a wonderful; day and keep the memories alive. Chuck

McIntire KILT, Steve Rixx KILT-FM, David Anderson KOKE-FM, Butch Brady KRBE and maybe others besides myself that I do not remember at the moment! Notables that worked in Lufkin at KLUF when I did were: Jerry Don Helm, Troy Langham, Harley Colt, Johnathan Hale and Clay Steely! KLUF got good enough in the late 70s to go straight to Houston or Dallas without going through KDOK in Tyler! Keep Tuned! Thanks and take care! Robert Tindle

GOODBYE LOCAL TV ANCHOR On Thursday, August 8, 2013, Fox Television Stations CEO Jack Abernethy tells its investors: We are retiring the typical anchorman and replacing him with multi-skilled personalities and journalists to evolve the local news model. Abernethy says the financial success of local news over the last four decades makes the news business very resistant to change and innovation and stagnant in style and form. He says Fox owned TV stations will evolve in a number of ways, including replacing the traditional anchor and newscast models and using technology and social media more effectively. As an example Abernethy points out that on WWOR TV the launch of Chasing New Jersey replaces the station’s only newscast.

CALLER PULLS HOAX ON ALBANY TALK HOST How does a radio talk show host verify who a phone caller says they are? Radio Ink reports that for about a half hour on Monday afternoon, August 12, 2013 a caller on Mike Lindsley's talk show on Townsquare ESPN WTMM FM (The Team 104.5) in Albany, NY claims to be former New York Yankee Shane Spencer. As Spencer, the caller claims that during his time as a player on the New York Yankees he dabbles in steroids. Shane learns about the interview and alerts the Michael Kay show on WEPN FM ESPN (98.7) in NYC that the caller is an imposter: I am hearing about this interview from friends, family, former teammates, and fans. I would like to set the record straight that the interview was not done with me and all the opinions were not mine.

DFW Media Lunch Bunch & WFAA exes the 1st Thurs. of every month. Hope that answers your question. Great corresponding with you, Jim. All best, Mary SAM

TRIVIA ANSWER: Satellite television begins on July 10, 1962 one day after the launch of Telstar. Communications satellite Telstar sends to Europe a concert by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at Mt. Rushmore. American viewers witness the sights of Paris, France. In 1962 The Tornados instrumental record Telstar is a hit.

JIM GOUGH ['Mr. Texas'-movie actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1188) April 08, 2013 [Monday] It was '86 or '87. A guy named Bob Anderson owned KRLY and my office was in the same building on Westheimer. Channel 26 TV was on the ground floor and I produced many a spot there! I think Rod (Tanner) only did a year or so at KOUL. Guy named Bob Trask moved to Corpus to manage the station. His wife was a model and I used her in some spots as well. Jim Gough

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I hope you get everything to work with your column. I find that I still like listening to the Radio, actually as soon as I got my radio, I quit looking at TV as much. Why I don't have Cable, and yet AT&T and others keep trying to push it. Like I use to go swimming but I don't as much as I use to, and the pools that I use to are gone are boarded up. Also I never liked Bowling but liked to go with friends sometimes, those places are gone. I want to wish you the best. Charles George KC5RAI

MEL BLANC [voice of Bugs Bunny, plus others] (May 30, 1908-July 10, 1989) That's all folks.

MUSIC CITY LOSES A TREASURE Tears fall like rain in Nashville, TN over the loss of one of its most prolific music producers, writer of Classic songs, discoverer of stars and member of the Country Music Hall of Fame when Cowboy Jack Clement dies of liver cancer at 82. Jack Clement's legacy begins at Sun Records in Memphis when he is the first to record Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison. In Nashville, Jack desegregates Country music when he brings Charley Pride to RCA records. The former Arthur Murray dance instructor and U.S. Marine publishes George Jones' Classic She Thinks I Still Care. There is hardly any well known recording artist that his life doesn't touch. Jack Clement’s home studio on Belmont Boulevard is a meeting place for generations of Nashville musicians.

HUGE UPSET IN CHICAGO'S PUBLISHING WORLD Chicago Tribune publishes sportswriter Dan Pompei's final column last week. The reason? The Tribune passes a rule that states no more outside, freelance work. Pompei refuses to give up his other sources of income and chooses to bid farewell to the Tribune. AOL's news website, Patch, sees what most call a Black Friday on August 9, 2013. Out of almost 900 of its websites, approximately 400 are shut down. As many as 500 employees nationwide hit the door. Patch operates several suburban-specific Chicago websites. Judy Keen, who is the USA Today locally-based Chicago Bureau Chief since January 2007, accepts a buyout of her contract and exits the newspaper. Judy flees to St. Paul, MN as a freelance reporter.

Hundreds of radio listeners express outrage over TSA's policies regarding people in wheelchairs. TSA  agent states that her screening does not take over an hour. Rather, from the time she stepped into line, to when she left the screening, it was less then 40 minutes.

I'm Editor-in-Chief of a new online drag racing magazine, Nostalgia Drag World (www.nostalgiadragworld.com/) and since our webmaster lives in the area and the Chicago-based publisher will soon be moving here, we needed to come back. My three kids and four grandkids as well as my wife's daughter and grandson living here also had a lot to do with it. Branson was nice and, since we're only 90 miles away, we can go back and visit occasionally. Hope you and Lacy are doing well waay down in Houston-town! Connell

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Jim, I really don't watch much TV anymore at all. The ads that they are using, for some reason, see designed to repulse the average viewer. I am not much on all the violence on TV but it would be occasionally nice to be able to watch television and not have to turn it off when my daughter is around. I suppose that is when I quit watching for the most part. The thing that disgusts me more than anything is all of the drug ads. They make it sound sexy to be messed up on drugs and the erectile dysfunction drugs are pretty horrible. Medicine men today do whatever the drug company tells them to do and unfortunately that is largely recreational in nature.  I appreciate informational TV ads, but they have gone way overboard on drugs. CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Hi, Stations can talk about how much better the music was in the good ole' days without mention of people like: Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie McTell, Willie Dixon. They will think Cream and others did the music first, unless they do research. Like who would believe students from Harvard would think of cheating on a take home exam. "You can always tell a Harvard Man but you can't tell him much." Charles George, KC5RAI

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Four Seasons' hit December 1963 (Oh What A Night) originally written by Bob Gaudio as December 5th, 1933. But with a little coaxing from Frankie Valli, Gaudio rewrites the lyrics plus the melody. In 1976, December 1963 (Oh What A Night) strikes #1 in both the US and UK charts.

AFN Europe turns off its 873 AM radio transmitter in Central Germany May 31, as part of Department of Defense’s ongoing efforts to reduce operating costs. It is one of two that serves Wiesbaden Army Airfield. AM 873 provides a mix of news, talk and political commentary. The second transmitter, 98.7 FM, broadcasts AFN The Eagle, 24/7 service of contemporary music, community information & top of the hour news. News & talk fans can listen to two Power Network Shows, Morning Newswatch, from 0600-0900 & Afternoon Newswatch from 1600-1880 weekdays on AFN 360: Internet Radio. 873 AM transmitter, off post in Weisskirchen, Germany, singled out for cost savings because of isolated location & high-cost upkeep. AFN Europe anticipates additional changes to provide American military with quality entertainment & command information, while being good stewards of taxpayer dollars.

LONG TIME RADIO OWNER'S TIME RUNS OUT John Mahaffey begins his long radio career on KWTO-560 in Springfield, MO. In the late 1960’s, he buys KJPW-1390 in Waynesville. Mahaffey expands with radio stations in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana. John's son Robert tells Radio Ink that his dad was a very demanding but fair leader, his integrity and honor were beyond reproach and he never accepted the status quo...he was one of the real radio pioneers starting out in the 50's through to his death. People who knew him will remember him as a hard-nosed and demanding leader but at the end of the day, fairness and truth were two big words for him. John Barton Mahaffey passes away on Friday, August 2, 2013 surrounded by his loving family and pastor.

JAZZ MUSICIAN PLAYS LAST KEY In 1967, before he earns a bachelor's degree in trombone and composition plus a minor in contrabass from the San Francisco Conservatory, George Duke attends Tamalpais High School about 14 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Mill Valley. Over the years, Duke plays with many artists from Jean-Luc Ponty to the Mothers of Invention to Cannonball Adderley. In 1999, he receives a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance for After Hours. In summer 2011, George's trio along with David Sanborn and Marcus Miller tour the USA with more than 20 sold out shows. On Monday, August 5, 2013 George Duke dies at 67 in Los Angeles of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. George's survivors include his sons Rasheed and John.

KID ROCK ISSUES THREAT TO INVADERS According to Undersheriff Michael McCabe, cops arrest a 43-year-old intruder in his home north of Detroit on Saturday, August 3, 2013 after he attempts to burglarize Rock star Kid Rock's mansion. Security camera surveillance video on Kid Rock's property in Clarkston, MI shows a man who rams the gate of Rock's home around 3:30 pm Wednesday with a white 1994 Ford Club Wagon van and attempts to break into his chateau. Kid Rock issues a warning on his website: Thank God I was not on the property at the time of this attempted break in. I am an avid hunter and marksman and I will not hesitate to shoot anyone who has myself or family in fear for our lives. I take the invasion of my personal space very seriously regardless of who you are.

TV CREW ROBBED AT GUNPOINT A string of Bay Area crime sprees target the media. In 2012, thieves beat and rob a KPIX TV CH 5 photographer of his camera. Another episode in May 2013 thugs steal personal items from a KGO TV CH 7 news van. What is ironic is both events happen in Oakland, CA. The latest Oakland crime adventure occurs on Friday afternoon, August 2, 2013 just after 2:30 pm when stickup artists rob at gunpoint a KGO TV crew of their camera equipment in the 2700 block of Chestnut Street in the western part of the city. The San Francisco Chronicle reports this unlawful act happens despite the fact that the crew was accompanied by a security guard. Oakland, CA is like a chapter from the Old West of the 1800s full of quick-draw artists, bandits and thieves.

DAN MCCURDY [formerly Charlie & Harrigan-KLIF-1190] (Sherman, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1197) May 10, 2013 [Friday] Jim...I just picked up the sad, sad news of Russ Knight, The Weird Beard's passing last year. Guess I missed the story in your October JRRRs. Got it from Kevin McCarthy's site tonight. Great guy, Russ. Just as sweet as he could be (for all his Weirdness facade). He was a gentle mentor for me when I pulled the midnight to daybreak gig on KLIF early in my Mighty 1190 career (air name: Dan Patrick). A true gentle giant who took a liking to a greenhorn from Abilene, TX who always sent me into my graveyard shift with a kind word, wink and a smile. Boy, did he dominate the nighttime ratings, too. 60+ AQH shares...even beating Ron and me with our highest Charlie & Harrigan mark of 54 in the fall of '64! RATS! We just keep on losing the good 'uns. You and I Jim, well, we just keep on a'truckin' and jivin'... MARY STODDARD ['Sam' on KVIL FM 1964] (Dallas-Frisco, TX) Hello Jim, I will definitely put some stories together for you and can put some blurbs in an email for you. Still have a very exciting and interesting life and career, even though I'm not on the air full time in awhile. I have produced several segments for 60-Minutes TV in NYC and Sydney Australia. Two years ago, I helped produce a French documentary which aired to rave reviews on Planette TV in Paris and others. I know your interested mainly in broadcasting stories, so I will try to find some interesting tidbits for you to consider. All best till later, Mary SAM

CHUCK DUNAWAY [former DJ on WABC-770, KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480 & KILT-610] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: Power of Radio. In 1938 it took only ONE performance of a song, on just ONE radio show, to make that song an instant nationwide hit that would go on to be a popular standard even to this day. Just ONE "spin" by the right person on the right show...that's all it took. A good reminder of the power of personality when it's combined with great product and the power of radio. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIi0VUAAlaU)

TRIVIA ANSWER: Nashville, TN is the birthplace of the distorted fuzzy guitar sound that we hear in Sizling Sixties psychedelic Rock ’n’ Roll tunes. Glen Snoddy, 91-year-old retired audio engineer who controls producer Owen Bradley’s three-channel recording console in summer 1960 remembers: I’m pretty sure what happened was the primary transformer opened up when the console malfunctioned and caused session great Grady Martin’s guitar sound to go from clean to bludgeoning during the recording of Marty Robbins’ 'Don’t Worry'. That one single fuzzy guitar jars, invigorates and launches Marty's Don’t Worry to #1 Country and #3 on Billboard's Pop chart. Recording artists rush to Bradley’s studio in search of that fuzzy guitar sound.

JIM GOUGH ['Mr. Texas'-movie actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1191) April 19, 2013 [Friday] Jim...I can't believe anyone who grew up in Texas doesn't know about Bob Wills. He created Western Swing in the 1930's when he played with the Lightcrust Doughboys in Fort Worth. All of us that play that kind of real Texas Music were and still are big Wills' fans! I saw his great band first at the old Dessau Hall near Austin in 1948. One of his best steel guitar players is my friend Herb Remington from Houston. Best, Jim Gough

KRIS KRISTOFFERSON (June 22, 1936-p) I'd trade all my tomorrows for one single yesterday.

As an actor grasps his fake handgun, cops make a life-or-death choice. One of the patrolmen knocks the gun out of the actor's hand and slaps handcuffs on his wrists. Glendora police Captain Tim Staab says this depicts the potential dangers in a movie-making region for amateur film crews who don't get permits and follow proper steps before taking to the streets.

Judy and I were eating at an Applebee's in Panama City Beach, Florida last year and there was a family of three or possibly four generations sitting close to us. A young girl - possibly 14 or 15 - sitting with this great family gathering, spent about 35-40 minutes of the hour they were there, texting. She was talking on her phone for about another 10 minutes. This meant she only interacted with all the gathered relatives (between bites of her food) for about 10 minutes or less. What a shame! The "dumbing of America!"

LYNN WOOLLEY [KTEM ex KRLD-KNOW-KUT] (Temple, TX) Subject: Kookie. Jim, I enjoyed reading about 77 Sunset Strip. In the late 70's, some friends and I were watching old episodes on 16mm film. (No VCR's yet in those days.) Several of us decided to write a book, but only 3 of us stayed with the project. The result was WARNER BROS. TELEVISION (McFarland and Co. 1985). The story of the WB series -- Cheyenne, Maverick, Lawman, The Alaskans, The Roaring Twenties, The Gallant Men, Hawaiian Eye, SurfSide 6, Lawman, Bronco, Sugarfoot, Colt 45 and a few others is still fun to read about. The WB studio under William T. Orr (whom I had a chance to meet at his Hollywood home while writing the book) really pulled ABC's fat out of the fire. 77 Sunset Strip was my favorite WB show, but Maverick, now coming out on DVD, was a total delight. You can still buy my book through AMAZON but it's now a collector's item and costs quite a bit -- not that get any of the money. Lynn (www.BeLogical.com)

MARY STODDARD ['Sam' on KVIL FM 1964] (Dallas-Frisco, TX) Hey Jim, I can probably get you a quote from Management at KHCB about her (Virginia Nash), if you like. I'd love to see The Chronicle do a small feature on her life of service sometime. Maybe I'll work up a Press Release and send them one. I worked with Reporters there to do a story on my Mother, just prior to her death in 2003. I make my living (such as it is) as a Publicist now, so these things come naturally to me. All best, Mary SAM

TRIVIA ANSWER: President Franklin Roosevelt is the first U.S. President to appear on television at the Worlds Fair on April 30, 1939. This is also marks American television's formal debut at the World's Fair. Ten days prior to President Roosevelt's speech, David Sarnoff, President of Radio Corporation of America (RCA), makes the dedication speech for the opening of the RCA Pavilion at the New York World's Fair.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Why is Cumulus desiring to end carrying Rush and Sean? I'm guessing yes Rush and Sean numbers ratings or strong though in what demographic. Could be their listeners are actively listening and have bought / purchased all they need to in life holding on to what they have purchased which is paid for thus the advertisers are telling the new ad men that come knocking "Yes they listen just don't buy any thing sooo what am I to do with that" ask the businesses to the Rush and Sean Hannity Radio Admen? Will The Kidd Kraddick Show continue with the remaining players? Leslie Wayne Hodges

AMERICA'S TOP TWO TALK HOSTS DROPPED? A major shakeup in radio. Politico reports on Sunday night, July 28, 2013 that the second-largest radio network in America, Cumulus, will drop Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity from its radio stations at the end of 2013. A source reports to JRRR that Cumulus will not renew its contracts with either host. This comes after negotiations between Cumulus and Premiere Networks break down due to disagreements over the cost of the distribution rights. Such action removes the two most highly rated Conservative talk personalities from more than 40 Cumulus channels. On Monday, July 29th Rush fires back with No, don't believe Politico it's a strategic negotiating move like in major league football

FANS MOURN LOSS OF KIDD KRADDICK In the last issue of JRRR we pay tribute to David Peter [Kidd] Craddick born on August 22, 1959 in Napoleon, OH who dies at 53 on July 27, 2013 of an enlarged heart. Kidd is a hero to his radio fans plus the kids that he helps with his Kidd's Kids foundation. Since his late-night debut in 1984 on KEGL FM (The Eagle 97.1) Craddick is a staple in the Dallas, TX radio market. In 1992, his morning show moves to KHKS FM (Kiss FM 106.1). In 2001, his show syndicates to more than 75 affiliates. On Sunday, July 28, 2013 fans place flowers, candles and notes at a makeshift memorial for Kidd Craddick at his show's studios in Dallas suburb Las Colinas, TX. In remembrance a fan says Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.

KOOKIE TURNS 80! That's the headline of an email we receive this week with this shocking news. Edd (Kookie) Byrnes turns 80 on Tuesday, July 30, 2013! Baby Boomers ask who is Kookie? If you're a fan like we are of TV's weekly series 77 Sunset Strip that runs from October 10, 1958 to February 7, 1964 you know that teen heartthrob restaurant valet Kookie keeps his comb handy to groom his duck-tail hair. If a pretty girl strolls by, Kookie might just say: Baby, you're the ginchiest! In 1959, Edd (Kookie) Byrnes and Connie Stevens score a #3 hit record with Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb). ABC's Hollywood private eye detective TV series 77 Sunset Strip stars Edward Byrnes (Kookie), suave private eye Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. (Stuart Bailey) and partner Roger Smith (Jeff Spencer).

TRIVIA QUESTION: In 77 Sunset Strip's final 1964 season where are Edd (Kookie) Byrnes and Roger Smith? The answer appears below.

CONNELL MILLER [Editor-in-Chief - Nostalgia Drag World] (Rogers, AR) Subject: J.J. Cale... Hi Jim, I had a call early Saturday from the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame informing me of J.J. Cale's passing the night before. Away from radio, my other job was playing in a band. In the early 1960s, when he was "Johnny Cale and the Quintet" and we were "Joe Huff and the Matadors," we fought for many of the same gigs - not only in Tulsa but around Oklahoma and the surrounding states, as both of us were heavily playing the college circuit. Cale eventually dropped the "Johnny" to become "J.J." and went on to write such songs as "Magnolia," "They Call Me The Breeze," "Cocaine," "After Midnight," "Sensitive Kind," "Crazy Mama" and many others. He was a true proponent of the "Tulsa Sound" - widely recognized for its laid-back amalgam of rock, blues, gospel, and country. My condolences go out to his family and our wide circle of musicians and friends who knew him or just loved his music. R.I.P. John... Connell Miller; Rogers, Arkansas (www.nostalgiadragworld.com/)

ROBERT TINDLE [Radio Engineering Professional] (Tyler-Lufkin, TX) Subject: Well Known and Liked Radio/TV Engineer Passes away. Jim!  A very great broadcast engineer Tom Fussell who made many friends over the last 30 plus years passed away last Friday night July 26, 2013 due primarily to complications from diabetes. Tom was in his mid 50s and had started his broadcast career at 1420 AM KLNX in Lufkin, Texas and then worked for KJCS, KYKS and many other stations in that area. Tom worked at then Clear Channel's KHYS 98.5 FM/KALO 1250AM in Beaumont-Port Arthur in the 80s and later stations in Austin, Texas such as KOOL 99 FM and others. After that KORA FM/ KTAM AM/TV in Bryan, Texas and eventually back to East Texas and was most recently working at KETX AM/FM/TV in Livingston, Texas. Tom was an innovator and loved to tell jokes and funny stories and also was of those "Yes We Can" attitude engineers. I NEVER met anyone who did not like Tom. He will be greatly missed! TRIVIA ANSWER: Roy Huggins creates TV series 77 Sunset Strip, Cheyenne, Maverick and The Fugitive all filmed at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank, CA. Private eyes Stu and Jeff's office is 77 Sunset Strip in Los Angeles next door to a snazzy restaurant where Kookie is a valet. Dino's Lodge, used in the TV series is then owned by Dean Martin. For the its 6th and final season, ABC hands the creative reigns over to Jack Webb and William Conrad who fire the entire cast except Efrem Zimbalist Jr. They re-mold his character Stu Bailey into an international spy but it bombs. ABC cancels the series mid-season.

The line of musicians who JJ Cale influences can reach the Strait of Gibralter but his name does not shine in neon lights. Cale says in an interview on his website No, it doesn't bother me. What's really nice is when you get a check in the mail. Eric Clapton and Lynyrd Skynyrd sail JJ Cale tunes to the moon and back. AL JAZEERA ASSAULTS AMERICAN TV On Wednesday, January 2, 2013 former Vice President Al Gore unloads his low rated liberal Current TV cable channel to the Emir of Qatar-funded Arab news channel Al-Jazeera. Gore's 20% stake nets him $100 million out of the reported $500 million total sale price. Al-Jazeera plans to end the agonizing seven-year-old Current TV and switch it to Al-Jazeera America with five to 10 new U.S. bureaus above the five it already has to launch on August 20, 2013. Al-Jazeera begins to raid American TV executives and reporters. Kate O'Brian, ABC News veteran, is its new President. Ehab El-Shihabi, who starts Al-Jazeera America's ball rolling, hires news anchors Ali Velshi, Soledad O'Brien and Richelle Carey.

BARB'S RADIO CAREER MOVES ON UP AND OUT Just out of high school in Fort Wayne, IN Barb Richards begins her journey in radio. Like most of us radio DJs to climb the ladder to success we move on up to larger markets in our quest for fame and fortune. Many of us find fame but fortune is at the end of our rainbows. For 8 years, Barb bounces back and forth on her crusade to bigger radio markets. In 1983, she winds up in Cleveland, OH. Again like a lot of us when the radio station flips its format in 1984, she receives the rusty axe. Richards and her husband relocate back to Fort Wayne. Bingo! Hot Adult Contemporary WFWQ FM (95.1) places her back on the air again in her home town. After nearly 30 years with WFWQ FM, Barb Richards now decides to retire from radio.

BRUCE ELROD (Ridgeway, SC) Subject: Today in Music History--Mick Jagger Turns 70! "Would YOU let your sister go out with one of THEM?" It was the question asked in a British newspaper's mid-60's editorial about this rock group...all part of an often-told story by Casey Kasem on "American Top 40" at various times during the 1970's. In the same Casey story, another writer called this group "perverted, outrageous, violent, repulsive, ugly, tasteless, incoherent, a travesty--and that's what's good about them." Well, that "perverted ugly" group is still going strong today. And just recently, the Rolling Stones released to I-Tunes a 19-song LP with the best of their Hyde Park live concert performances of July 6 and 13. Oh, and Mick Jagger turns SEVENTH Friday (7/26/13). Hope you have great 2013. Written by Jim Richards, morning man at ZBM 2, the station we tried to compete with in Bermuda in the early 60's... ZBM 1 and 2 were based on the BBC model and staffed by announcers from Britain's possessions, Canada, Australia, and other English speaking countries, all well paid and professional. They wouldn't hire me because I was an American, even for a part-time gig, so I ended up on the native station, ZFB, the only non-Bermudian, and as the newly minted Canadian Donnie Dare. The story Jim tells is true and almost too coincidental. Bermuda Radio Archive Network.

CONNELL MILLER (Branson, MO) I'm renting a small office at a storage facility, and a friend who does audio/visual recording in the unit next door, Jesse Deese, went to Joe South's (Games People Play, Walk a Mile in My Shoes) funeral. Jesse used to have a recording studio in Georgia where he recorded the last of South's albums, and still has two unreleased tunes in the can (he played one of them at the service). Hopefully they'll soon see the light of day! Connell

BRYAN HOUSTON (Tyler, TX) Jim, I started in radio when I was in high school in Eunice, LA in 1973. Worked in Lafayette, Abbeville, Tyler, TX, Baton Rouge. Moved into TV as sportscaster in 1980, working in Tyler, Lufkin, Chattanooga, then came back to be a news anchor in Tyler in 1991 and did that until two years ago, when I got tired of the direction TV news was going. I got the opportunity to do a sports talk show at 99.3 TALK FM in Tyler, did that for 1 1/2 years. The station was in deep debt, terribly mismanaged, and finally in February, they dropped the format and laid off all the humans. I now work for a sports marketing company, do guest appearances on a local sports talk show twice a week, and host podcasts for a Dallas-based website, www.RattleAndHumSports.com. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I look forward to reading your newsletter. Thank you. Bryan Houston; Clear Marketing Concepts (www.clearmarketingconcepts.com)

ROBERT MILLER [Professor - University of MI] (Detroit/Plymouth, MI) Hi Jim & Lacy, It's always a treat to read you twice a week and hear stories from the folks who all have interesting backgrounds and stories to share. I know from time to time you write a short note about your experience but I think it would be great to read a longer narrative on your experiences and journey through the years in radio. I know we both worked for KBUC back in the 60's but it would be great it you gave your readers a bit more about yourself. Where are you from? Where did you first work in radio? Where did you last work in radio? And all those places in between! Who impressed you the most in radio and music? We all have our favorite stories and memories but you are too gracious to toot you own horn much. So, I think your readers will agree with me on this one...start tooting sir! Bob Miller Plymouth, MI

DALLAS, TX is my home town. From 1964-65 I attend Elkins Institute of Radio in Dallas. In April 1965 first radio DJ position is KASO-1240 in Minden, LA. In 1966 the wonderful Cal Druxman hires me as PD/MD/DJ on KHFI FM in Austin, TX. In 1967 Ed Miller places me noon-3pm DJ on the fantastic KPCN-730 in Big D. Move over to nights on 50,000 watt clear channel WFAA-820 in Dallas with listeners in 38 states. Other Dallas frequencies include KBOX-1480 (1971-72), KLIF-1190 (1972). Ft. Worth: KFJZ-1270 (1973-75) and KXOL-1360 (1975-76). In August 1977 it's KIKK FM here in Houston. In 1978 noon-3pm on KNUZ-1230. Then KULF-790 noon-3pm. In 1980 Bill Young hires me as a DJ on Album Rock KILT FM until it flips to Country in 1981. From 1991-95 back on KILT FM in Space City.

TONY WILLIAMS [ex WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Music 'Til Dawn. Jim, Was "Music "Til Dawn" sponsored by American Airlines in various cities? Tony (www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWe2MY5BvWY)

MUSIC TIL DAWN American Airlines sponsors Music Til Dawn on nine 50,000 watt clear channel radio stations throughout America. Its music is Classical. Theme song is That's All. Each host sounds almost the same with deep mellow voices. In Dallas, TX it is on KRLD-1080 with legendary Hugh Lampman as its host from 1954 to 1963 per Mike Shannon. Later, Lampman is a DJ on KVIL FM before it flips to Rock. Have a neat story from 1964 about Hugh at KVIL FM in posh Highland Park section of Dallas. In the 1960s, Tony Garrett is the next radio voice out of Big D to host Music Til Dawn on KRLD-1080. He sounds terrific, too.

MIKE BRAUN [ex KWTX-1230 Waco, TX] (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: KWTX anniversary and Buddy Bostick birthday. Jim, KWTX radio and TV moved from 4520 Bosque Blvd. to a new building at 6700 American Plaza in 1986. The Bosque Blvd. building later became Oakcrest Funeral Home. KWTX-AM and FM were sold to GulfStar Communications in 1996, ending Mr. Bostick’s 50-year relationship with KWTX radio. "Buddy" Bostick celebrate{s} his 95th birthday on May 18. The stations are now owed by Clear Channel Communications and are located at 314 West State Hwy. 6 in Waco. KWTX-TV was sold to Gray Communications in 1999 and remains at 6700 American Plaza. Best wishes, Mike Braun, KWTX-AM/FM, 1975-1979
