MAJOR SHAKEUP AT THE ALPHABET NETWORK The ABC Entertainment Group asks its President, Stephen McPherson, to resign. Stephen, who is on vacation, is supposed to return to the office on Monday but when he is not there by Tuesday rumors begin to fly about his possible departure. McPherson issues a statement: I want to thank the wonderful team of individuals who have worked with me throughout my time here and wish them nothing but the best. Paul Lee, President of ABC Family cable TV, is Stephen's replacement. Insiders say that this is no surprise because in 2009 under Paul, ABC Family TV is on a roll with hot new shows Pretty Little Liars and Huge. ABC Entertainment hopes to attract ABC Family TV's young demographics. McPherson oversees ABC Entertainment as its President since 2004. In January 2009, ABC expands his role to be in charge of both the ABC Entertainment programming and ABC Studios. Also, talk is that McPherson often clashes with Disney/ABC TV Group honcho Anne Sweeney. Their disagreements appear to smooth out but industry watchers expect their turmoil eventually causes McPherson's exit from ABC. And the beat goes on.
Jason also remains PD of Rock KRDJ FM (Acadiana's Classic Rock Station 93.7) in nearby Lafayette-New Iberia, LA. BEATLES' PIANO FOR SALE A coffee-stained upright piano that the Beatles use to record Paperback Writer, Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da and Tomorrow Never Knows goes on the auction block. Experts expect its price to exceed $300,000. The Challen upright piano is part of the Abbey Road studios in London. Abbey Road buys the piano in 1964. Its legend extends past the Beatles because Pink Floyd also plays it on their Wish You Were Here album. The piano is used in Abbey Road's smallest workshop, Studio III. But Abbey Road retires the piano in 1980. Its current owner has it on the auction block at a Bonhams auction at Goodwood in West Sussex scheduled for August 15, 2010. Also included in the sale are copies of The Beatles Book magazine that features pictures of Paul McCartney at the piano.
CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) Subject: Dizzie Lizzie. A few columns back Dizzie Lizzie was mentioned. She was one of a kind. I was listening to a Micky Newbury CD yesterday and remembered he had a song by that title. Upon listening I know he'd written it about her..."I was just a kid of seventeen". That song is about a real event. I remember we used to listen to the R&B station of which there was two. One was downtown and the other was a few blocks from KNUZ. Mickey was a really cool kid and keep up with whatever was happening. A lot of parents didn't want their kids listening to R&B (or race music). Dizzie was a white lady who was married to ole time producer and Elvis's local contact Gabe Tucker. She could talk the jive in those days. She was also the only DJ to play my first record Please Be Sincere. She should be in the Texas DJ Hall of Fame.
JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AK) I remember Joe Salvador from listening to him but I don't think I ever met him. He was at WFAA when I returned from the Panama Canal Zone. JC
TRIVIA ANSWER: Downtown by Petula Clark wins the Best Rock and Roll Recording Grammy in 1965. At my first radio DJ position in 1965 on KASO-1240 in Shreveport-Minden, LA a teenage boy and girl call in to request that song almost every night. They tell me that when they hear Downtown on my radio show it's their cue to meet in beautiful downtown Minden. Guess that I serve as their Quicksilver messenger service.
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) ...Jim, re: <<When CH39 launches NewsFix in fall 2010 it ends its on-camera TV anchors and reporters to instead place emphasis on natural sound and video to tell stories.>> WOW...further proof that nuttin' is new...this 'NewsFix' approach sounds exactly like the old WBAP-TV (Channel 5) late night 'Texas News'...no talking heads, just film galore with narration; pretty well covered most everything that moved in North Texas, with some footage sent in by other outlets around the state. I always enjoyed 'The Texas News' due to the wall-to-wall actualities. I always left the show thinking, "Well, there ya go...I've just seen everything that's happened around town today." I remember Cary Sims, one of the Ch. 5 filmsters at the time, telling me the way they 'edited in the camera' in order to conserve film and maintain continuity/story flow, so the editors essentially processed the film and would be able run the stories with very little additional editing, if any. The show ran during the later '60s, and if I recall correctly until the mid '70s. Any JRRR reader with correct broadcast years, please correct my dates. Film of the 'Texas News' show opener can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHdc_RZSU0s&feature=related Dan McCurdy, Sherman, TX - KLIF, KBOX-Dallas; WMEX-Boston; 2004 inductee in the TX Radio Hall of Fame; Fortune 500 advertising/PR exec; freelance writer/voice talent

CLASSICAL MUSIC HOST PASSES INTO THE NIGHT For 55 years, Ralph Schoenleben hosts Sunday Evening Concert on Bliss Communications News-Talk WRJN-1400 in Racine, WI. Ralph operates a record store downtown for many years. When he reaches 89 he closes the store but carries on his rare recording endeavor online afterwards. Schoenleben is multi-talented. He is a member of ASCAP and is a music composer since he is 18. Ralph has not been in the studio to host his Classical music show since December 2009. But WRJN-1400 continues to air the Best of Ralph Schoenleben weekly. The Racine Journal-Times says that Ralph Schoenleben dies at 94 on Monday, July 19, 2010. JRRR expresses our sincere sorrow for his family, friends and many listeners.

THE TV TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN' Due to our country's economic situation TV stations lay off TV anchors and cancel newscasts to save money for the bean counters but this also chases viewers away to other means for their daily news hungers. The once-proud media company Tribune Broadcasting's CEO Randy McMichaels, who is a former radio executive, comes up with a better idea that he calls NewsFix. This new experimental news plan involves the elimination of TV anchors and newscasts. On the local scene here in Houston, TX KIAH TV CH39 reverses its ad campaign that begins in 2009 which promotes its news anchor Mia Gradney. When CH39 launches NewsFix in fall 2010 it ends its on-camera TV anchors and reporters to instead place emphasis on natural sound and video to tell stories. JRRR believes that this sounds like something right out of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Magic show. KIAH TV's GM Roger Bare declares that KIAH will be the pilot program for Tribune Broadcasting's NewsFix, which is expected to launch in late September or early October.
Having been raised mostly outside of Dallas until my senior year in Dallas, but always being a fan of KLIF (1190) and having worked there, one of my favorites is: Summer Breeze. In CA listened to American Bandstand, of course, while in the LA area. After moving near Modesto, we listened to Wolfman Jack at night...hard to limit my favorites. Love Lemon Tree, Summer Summer, Summer Wind. Who couldn't love Theme From A Summer Place?!? And, Mother-In-Law by Ernie K. Doe was a big-time favorite while driving around in all the beautiful cars in the Modesto area with everyone rocking the car to do a funny thing that was "the thing" as a teenager there. Spent nearly 3 years in Panama City, Panama and the Panama Canal Zone in the late 60's where I listened to "Guantamera" and "The Girl from Ipanema" played from an album by Ferrante & Teicher. Hi, I like Mike Shannon's page about History Of Dallas Broadcasting. But since I am on the fringe, about a mile from where Mesquite starts, looking for stations I still recall KGGC 89.7 with an Underground Format. I thought it was cool since I liked it better than KNUS and almost as much as KFAD. I was not sure I was going to graduate, can anything good come from Samuel High School anyway? But I put on my choices for college ETSU, WTSU, and Grayson Community College. Anyway on the SAT or whatever it was, I was accepted to the Social Science Department. I went to East Texas State University planning to be the next Hemingway. Well one can dream can't they? I put as a choice Grayson Community College because of having been hearing KGCC. I visited a church, Sunday and there was some one who I use to work in the grocery business with, I thought I was where no one would know me. Makes me realize that Darkness and Light are the same to God. Like when asking for IDs. I was told better to over ID on the radio than under ID. Charles, KC5RAI
LONG TIME VETERAN JOURNALIST BIDS FAREWELL Daniel Schorr is a news analyst for National Public Radio since 1985 but he has a long history in broadcasting since Edward R. Murrow first hires him in 1953 at CBS News. NPR reports the death of broadcast journalist Daniel Schorr at 93 on Friday, July 23, 2010. Daniel is the last active member of Edward R. Murrow’s team at CBS. Scott Simon, host of Weekend Edition, poses the question: What other person was personally acquainted with both Richard Nixon and Frank Zappa? In a business that’s known for burning out people, Dan Schorr shined for nearly a century. Schorr’s journalism career begins just after World War II, when he joins the Christian Science Monitor as a foreign correspondent. In 1953, Murrow brings Daniel to CBS, where he is known for his combative news approach. During his coverage of Watergate, Schorr announces Nixon’s enemies list before the Senate on live TV. He quickly discovers that the list includes his own name along with a note, a real media enemy. According to The Washington Post in 2003, Daniel says, I no longer pursue scoops, but concentrate on the context and meaning of things. I interact with journalists a third to half my age who seem to regard me as a walking history book. During his career, he wins a Peabody award, three Emmy awards and the DuPont-Columbia Golden Baton among many other tributes.
I tried to respond to yesterday's note...but, it didn't go through. My first job in radio in 1955, I worked for Cy Blumenthal at WARL in Arlington, VA in 1958. He bought WABB in Mobile, AL and I went there in 1958 and worked there until 1960. Then I went to WKCW (Big 'K') in Warrenton, VA. As they say the rest is history. I'm now at WAMU (American University) in Washington, D.C. Thanks friend, Tom 'Cat' Reeder
Dear Jim and Lacy, well, the part about taxes gave me pause, (grin) but this entire email is so true and a good, gentle reminder of the fact that we Americans should be giving Thanks all year, not just on that sweet holiday in November. God is so good and so very patient and giving, heck, he has put up with me and I was a wild child in the seventies. Bless you for such a cool website and email list. Sincerely, just a fan, Karen T.
JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Subject: Not all are the "in crowd". Jim, Scott Hodges is definitely not part of any in crowd and Jim White spent so many years at KNUS...pretty much from the beginning, through all the ups, downs, sideways, etc., normally the length of anyone's career, I'm sure he earned it. Michael O told me he was nominated 6 times before he made it! I'm proud I nominated Scott first last year and again this year. I'm very surprised that you didn't get the support promised to you. VERY. And, disappointed. People should never say anything they are not going to follow up on, and to me a promise is sacred. If I'm not sure I can keep a promise, I always say I promise I'll do my best. My dad taught us how important keeping our word was, and I learned as a mother that a child's heart can be broken by a promise not kept. Don't give this thing a second thought, Jim. Keep on truckin' and doing what you enjoy. Looks like the FB thing has become fun and interesting for you. I'm an old fuddy-duddy and don't like all the info that people put out there forever and ever...frightens me a bit. Take care, Jim. Joyce
Congrats to the Man who got me started in radio, Don Couser...well deserved!!! Jack Hines (Heinritz) a great man and a scholar. CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Minority Ownership. Jim, I was thinking I read where 93.3 was supposed to be for Minority Ownership. Maybe, what I was read was wrong. Besides what is Minority Ownership? Amateurs often use wire antennas to send signals out over the bands they use. I was wondering whether any AM/MW broadcast stations use wire antennas? When at KCHU-FM, I got a phone call and was talking, another person at the station reminds me it is good to turn off the microphone first... I have to admit I found being on the air was not as easy as I thought it would be. I found that NRC Logbook was cheaper and more helpful to me along with their antenna pattern book, but then I was just listening for stations. I also always liked SRDS better than Broadcasting Yearbook. Charles George

KLIF DALLAS DUO DONS NEW PD Paul Duckworth, radio programming vet, is the new PD of Cumulus News/Talk KLIF-570 and clustermate CHR KLIF FM (i93) Dallas, TX. Paul succeeds the late Steve Nicholl who dies suddenly in May 2010 after an apparent heart attack. Duckworth tells NTS MediaOnline Today, I’m excited about the opportunities ahead. These are legendary call letters, we’ve got some key pieces in place, and I am thrilled to join the folks at Cumulus. KLIF-570 is originally WFAA-570 since its inception. When the original KLIF-1190 drops its legendary call letters WFAA quickly scoops them up. Ironically, from 1967-68 I'm a DJ on 50,000 watt clear channel WFAA-820 M-F and on 5,000 watt WFAA-570 on Sunday afternoons. In 1972, I'm a newscaster on KLIF-1190. These call letter switch-a-roos destroy radio history plus it's mighty confusing to keep up with who's who and what's what. Paul comes to KLIF-570 from his stint as PD at WMAL-630 Washington, DC. Also in his radio resume are KPAM Portland, OR; KOMO-1000 and KVI-570 Seattle, WA and WDBO Orlando, FL.
BROADCASTING & CABLE YEARBOOK formerly the Broadcasting Yearbook is a major institution in the broadcast industry since probably before WWII ceases publication with the 2010 issue. Guess that free online access to most of its data replaces the $395 reference book. Can remember paying I believe $25 each for the annual issues in the mid 1960s. Somewhere inside boxes are my copies of the 1965 and 1966 issues. Sure love to have a copy of any issue of Broadcast Yearbook because it is so helpful. Another piece of radio history evaporates right before our eyes.

CONNELL MILLER (Bella Vista, AR) Subject: "Grazing in the Grass". Hi Jim, In JRRR #845 you mentioned the Friends of Distinction's version of Grazing in the Grass. The arranger and conductor (and long-time RCA employee) for that song was Ray Cork. Ray, nice guy and a great musician, is now retired from the LA music scene and living here in Bella Vista, where he occasionally plays in a local big band. My wife and I see Ray and his wife Gilda occasionally, and we trade emails quite often. I'll have to let him know of your mention of his big hit from 1969. Take care...Connell Miller
DAN MURPHY [Daniel] (Providence-Warwick, RI) Subject: DJ passes, request for subscription. I just stumbled into your site while searching for info on a former Providence, RI DJ, whose name came up while another favorite of days gone by was being remembered on Facebook, where one thing leads to another... The FB thread started when a friend noted that John A. Manzi, broadcasting under the name Andy Jackson and from that the nickname Big Ange, had died. The news report in The Providence Journal is here: www.projo.com/news/content/MANZI_OBIT_07-20-10_AOJ8NRN_v9.16839fb.html And please sign me up for an online subscription at danmurphyvet@hotmail.com. Send your full Name, City, State and Country of residence to rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Subject: Mike Marshall commented on your Facebook photo: Jim, if you remember the cart machines at WFAA were on the right at waist level. When you were facing the mic, you couldn't (see) them and it was a mental challenge to remember what you had had loaded where.

MIKE IS CORRECT. Forget all about that cart machine catastrophe at WFAA. But I'm still young in radio and do not pay it much attention because just a couple of years before WFAA I'm on KASO-1240 in early 1965 in Minden, LA where we have zero cart machines. We read all of our commercials live. But we ad-lib the Beall's department store spot from full page newspaper ads. Crinkle, crinkle, crinkle. About a month after I arrive, the KASO co-owner/GM buys one record/playback cart machine for the control room. At my 2nd radio station KTER-1570 in Terrell, TX our production room begins to not produce plus our 2 Collins cart machines run through the cue tones. So, it's back to reading all of the ads live. It's not until my 3rd radio station the magnificent KHFI FM in Austin, TX that I am on a real radio station with a full complete staff. The 1st two radio stations have no news departments or even a receptionist. KHFI FM is in a modern 2-story building along with sister stations KHFI-970 and KHFI TV 42. Really great place to be with real radio pros. The 3rd radio station KPCN-730 in Dallas, TX is well equipped too but much smaller building and staff. So, WFAA-820/570 in 1967 in Big D is just my 4th radio station in less than two years time.

MIKE MCHENRY (San Saba, TX) Subject: Ken Grant funeral. On behalf of Doris and the rest of Ken’s family, thank you for the kind and thoughtful emails and cards. We especially thank Mike Marshall, Chuck Joseph, Arch Yancey, Ladd Bednar and other KNUZ/KQUE associates, past and present, who attended his funeral yesterday in Houston. Your presence, reminisces and comments were greatly appreciated. God Bless. Mike and Lynn (Grant) McHenry
DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Greetings Jim & Lacy! Enjoy the birthday announcements in your newsletters. You must keep a birthday calendar. "I Walk The Line" by Johnny Cash hits # 1 in the week of July 21st 1956. (Newsletter 845) Awhile back in a couple of your newsletters there was some discussion about Johnny Paycheck's name & was it possibly a play on Johnny Cash's. (I have no idea if it was or not.) Johnny Cash's popularity at the time was mentioned. A thought that's been stuck in my head is that during the height of his career (mid to late 1950's thru early to mid 1970's) Johnny Cash could've sang the phonebook & had a gold record. Looking the other day I saw that he had 105 songs make it into the Top 40 of the Billboard Country Charts. He was a good man. I've long been a fan of his & also of his daughter Rosanne. Take Care, David.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1971, Simon & Garfunkel's 5th and final record album Bridge Over Troubled Water wins the Grammy Record of the Year and Song of the Year plus 4 more Grammy Awards. The album is #1 both in the USA and Australia.
JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) I was working at KDSX, Sherman & Denison in the early seventies. Early one afternoon, the program director, the late K.B. Lorance, came by the production booth and said something about a tornado being less than a mile away. I didn’t have much experience with twisters, but knew I didn’t want to be in one’s way, so I made a beeline for the transmitter room, which was reinforced, thinking I’d be safe there. After about five minutes, Lorance poked his head in, asked what I was doing, and I told him hiding from the tornado. He got me to go out to the front porch of the station, to see that the tornado was headed away from KDSX, and then said: "The time to hide from one of those things is when it’s headed TOWARD you, not AWAY from you!" I was embarrassed, but a lot smarter about tornados after that. John Hale; Mobile Magic Music (33.Music) "We're at the best parties!"
For years John takes his wife and sons to the resort. Davis drowns while swimming in Long Lake in the Manistee National Forest in northwest Michigan. Andy's brother-in-law who is a Columbus paramedic gives him CPR for 20 minutes but he does not respond. Mason County undersheriff Tom Trenner says My understanding was that he loved swimming and was a halfway decent swimmer. I don't have any concrete evidence, but speculation is that he has a medical problem such as a heart attack. Davis' survivors include his wife Molly and their three sons Johnny (10), Oliver (3) and Sammy who is born this year.
KOCD FM billboards itself as The New Version of FM and Building The Playlist You Always Wanted. Broadcast Architecture’s Smooth Jazz Network syndicated radio hosts bite the dust in favor of a local airstaff. Not that I would ever put myself in that group of talent but one of my stories is being on the air when Elvis died. It was about 10:30 in the morning and Of course with those big KLIF news bulletin intros The newsman broke in and announced Elvis was dead. The phones immediately lit up. I played Elvis songs and took calls all morning. Another thing I remember when I did 10p-2a late nights on KLIF each jock had his own newsman. Mine was Ch.5 KXAS News Anchor Mike Snider. Two newscasts an hour with jock/newsman banter out of news regularly. Also news when it happens break ins from the KLIF mobile unit. All this going on between 10-2 AT NIGHT! Those were the days! GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Subject: "Bones" Grant and other things. July 18th; Sorry to hear about Ken "Bones" Grant. He was one of the softest spoken men I ever worked with. Even though Dave Morris went through several PD's and operation managers, Ken was always a guy you could talk with he would listen. He was never actually my boss, as Dave made all the decisions about budget, talent etc. but Ken would always explain some of the things Morris would do. I spent five years as News and Sports Director at KNUZ/KQUE and he and Buddy McGregor had convinced Dave the stations needed to emphasize more sports as well as news. That was why I was hired from KRLD-TV in Dallas. I replaced Dave Ward who went from radio to television. I convinced Buddy and Dave it would be good station PR to let me do the Houston Mavericks games after Slater Martin called me and asked me to do the play-by-play for the new ABA team. We didn't do play by play on KNUZ. He allowed me to do the games on a station I think was KXYZ. I lasted over five years at KNUZ and some of the experiences were good and a few were bad. It was great working with Joe Ford, Jerry Mueller, Paul Berlin and others. When Larry Wilson, the program director, started writing scathing memos to the news staff, I went to Morris and told him it had to stop. He backed Larry saying he was PD although I had equal status. I resigned the next day although Morris tried to talk me out of it. Not long after that, they had a new PD. Dave told me years later that he had made a mistake in letting me go but I told him I wasn't sorry and wasn't upset with him. He had also allowed me to do five years of the PA at the Dome for the Oilers and Astros and everything else that took place in the Hofheinz hacienda. But that was to supplement my income because he was tighter than Rosie O’Donnell’s panty hose. Just a memory from out of the past. Gary D. (www.garydnews.com)
DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: KBUY 1540. Greetings Jim & Lacy, I posted a similar note to this on the DFW Radio Discussion Board & had some wonderful responses. I'm interested in any stories, memories, technical info, etc that anyone would like to share about KBUY (KCUL, etc) 1540 Ft. Worth. It was a station that I enjoyed listening to growing up. Their 50kw day pattern was loud & clear in Oak Cliff, fairly strong in Garland. Night pattern didn't hit Dallas Co. at all. But during daylight hours it was great to listen to. Lots of well known radio people worked there. Jay Weaver has fond memories of the place. Would enjoy hearing any recollections that anyone (employees or listeners) would like to share. Take Care, David Faulkner
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Summertime Is Here. Hi, I always liked Ice Cream Man by John Brim after hearing it. Also a song for out swimming at a pool party, Double Shot, not sure that is the real title, that I still think of hearing before the News would come on. Also Grazing In the Grass make up my list of songs for the summer.

SWINGIN' MEDALLIONS have the #17 tune Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love) in summer 1966. Two different forms of Grazing In the Grass make the charts. South African trumpeter/band leader Hugh Masekela's version in summer 1968 rises to #1 and remains there for 2 weeks. It sells over a half million copies. Los Angeles, CA R&B vocal group Friends of Distinction bring the song back in summer 1969 which lands at #3 on Billboard. It, too, sells over a half million copies.
EVERGREEN SONGSMITH DEPARTS A member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame who pens some of our favorite all time Classic tunes, Hank Cochran, passes away at 74 on Thursday, July 15, 2010. Hank writes many memorable tunes - Patsy Cline: I Fall To Pieces, She's Got You; Eddy Arnold: Make The World Go Away, I Want to Go With You; Johnny Paycheck: A-11; Mickey Gilley: That's All That Matters and Ray Price: A Way to Survive. Several artists like Ronnie Millsap, Ray Price, George Jones, Jack Greene and Gene Watson record his Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me. He also co-writes George Strait's Ocean Front Property and The Chair as well as Johnny Bush's 1968 Top 10 hit Undo the Right. Cochran and Grand Ole Opry star Jeannie Seely are husband and wife from 1969 to 1979. Hank writes Jeannie's 1966 smash record Don't Touch Me. The list goes on and on. A private memorial and a public service are in the planning stages. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
THE KILLER STRIKES AGAIN! Fabulous Fifties Rock ‘n’ Roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis has a new record album on the way that features many hot Rock artists. The Pumpin' Piano man's last studio album is Last Man Standing in 2006. For his new record album, Mean Old Man, Jerry Lee puts together a whole slew of famous friends: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, John Fogerty, Ringo Starr, John Mayer, Slash, Kid Rock, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood and Willie Nelson to name just a few. The record arrives in two forms, a 10 track standard release plus an 18 track deluxe version. Lewis fans who buy the record through iTunes receive a bonus track, Here Comes That Rainbow with Shelby Lynn. We can look for Jerry Lee Lewis' new record on September 7, 2010 on Verve/Universal.

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Jim...A memory I had forgotten, revived by Tony Lawrence's email: When I first "pitched" the PD job of KLIF in August 1970 Lee Douglas was our midday air personality. I agree with Tony, Lee was a terrific announcer, and a great guy. I recall the day Ken Dowe appointed me as program director...barely 23, never been a PD, never been a boss of anything other than my dog. Ken told me that unfortunately my first duty as KLIF PD would be to fire Lee Douglas. I was stunned...but KLIF had already hired an east-coast "flame thrower" of a jock, Dickie Heatherton...who was the brother in law of Dallas Cowboy Lance Rentzel, who'd just married Hollywood heart-throb (and Dickie's sister) Joey Heatherton. So, my first duty was to give Lee "the bad news". Nervously waiting in my office for Lee to sign off at 3PM...I was fidgety and folding and re-folding his license and final check, listening to his final minutes on-air...and then he said (and I quote precisely): "Well, if the boss didn't hear the show I'll be back on Monday, Ha-ha, now here's Engelbert Humperdinck's 'Please Release Me, Let Me Go'...". My program assistant Gail knew what was comin', ran out of the office crying leaving me alone to face the happy Lee as he strolled out of the studio. Gulp!! Lee went on to WFAA after that. He knew the termination wasn't my idea and forgave me for it. Like Tony, I've completely lost contact with Lee. Sincerely, Michael O'Shea

REMEMEMBER Dickie Heatherton well. When I become a newscaster on KLIF-1190 in 1972, Dickie is the mid-day DJ. One day on the intercom he tells me that vivacious actress songbird Joey Heatherton is his sister. In summer 1972 she has the hit record Gone. The Heathertons are hot commodities. Being an avid Dallas Cowboys fan I know that Joey's husband is all-pro wide receiver Lance Rentzel. Michael O'Shea is the KLIF Program Director. The legendary Mike Selden is PM Drive DJ. Ted Agnew is the News Director who hires me after I leave KBOX-1480. Bruce Hughes is one of the best newscasters around. Deep-voice buddy John Butler holds down weekend DJ duties. At that time KLIF-1190 remains the best-sounding radio station in America. KLIF is a fun and extremely exciting place to be.
I had intended to write you back when I get to Florida tomorrow night. Don't despair about the situation with the website, and I hope you won't let the unkind words of a few people make you consider giving up, they're just a few people when so many of us enjoy what you do and want you to continue. I'm going on the road but I'll write back as soon as I can. Best wishes always, Mike Shiloh

KIRBY ST. ROMAIN's tune Summer's Comin's highest position on Billboard in summer 1963 is #49. As many of us know, Kirby is a Louisiana boy who is a graduate of NTSU north of Dallas in Denton, TX. Pat Boone and Roy Orbison also are NTSU students. St. Romain and Rock singer Scotty McKay (Max K. Lipscomb) are songwriters from my hometown Dallas, TX. It is Dick Clark who suggests the name Scotty McKay to Philly based producers Bob Crewe and Frank Slay. In late 1957, Scotty joins Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps as a rhythm guitarist/pianist. In 1965, The Scotty McKay Quintet has a cameo role in an AIP Vincent Price horror flick based on Edgar Allen Poe’s The Black Cat. Scotty appears on screen performing Sinner Man plus covers of Bo Diddley’s Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry’s Brown-Eyed Handsome Man. McKay records on the Ace (New Orleans), Parkway, Swan, SSS, Dot, Event, Desk, Phillips, Capri, Lawn, Falcon and Claridge labels. Up to 1962 Scotty does 6 singles on Ace records with sidemen Mac Rebbenack, Allen Toussaint and Fats Domino’s backing band.
ANOTHER YANKEE SUCCUMBS As we mention in JRRR this week legendary NY Yankee announcer Bob Sheppard dies at 99. On Tuesday, July 13. 2010 Yankee owner/GM George Steinbrenner dies from a heart attack at 80 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, FL. Yankee players and fans refer to George as The Boss. For more than 30 years, he lives up to his nomenclature the Boss which is a nickname he earns and enjoys because he rules with an iron fist. Many say that he buys championships with millions of dollars. But Steinbrenner rebuilds the New York Yankees into a sports empire. During his reign the Yankees win six World Series titles. One of my favorite baseball manager/coaches is Billy Martin. George feuds and clashes with Billy Martin but he hires and fires him twice.

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) Subject: Dizzie Lizzie. You got it all right. Most of the listening audience didn't know she was white. Larry Williams was from Houston & He probably was thinking of Dizzy (Dizzy Miss Lizzy-1958). I met her once...my ex deceased wife worked with her for a brief period. That was my connection. It could have she took that name from the record because this was in 1960...don't know much more...but I know Mickey (Newberry) was thinking of her...it's all in the song. I think she was hosting an R&B show or something...maybe even promoting it because that how some of the show got together in those days.
JOE FORD (Houston-Spring, TX) Subject: Ken Grant. Unbelievable! Ken Grant passes! Ken hired me when I was just a kid. What patience this man had as the official overseer of me, Berlin, Yancey, Williams, and rest of the young wild bunch at KNUZ. I think Ken cringed everyday wondering what would happen next but he took it all in stride. Such a great guy. I guess I though he would live forever. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Doris and his family. Joe Ford
JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#842) July 14, 2010 [Wednesday] Hey Jim, It’s been a lousy couple of weeks for the New York Yankees organization. You mentioned Bob Sheppard, their great stadium announcer passing away. Now comes word that "The Boss", George Steinbrenner, has died. He wasn’t universally-liked, but he bought the Yankees when they’d gone through a long dry spell, and turned them into a massively successful billion dollar business. He was the prototype of the hard-nosed Yankee businessman, and he returned the Yankees into the iconic team they’ve become. I’m not a Yankees fan, but you hate to see two legends like that pass on so close together. Yours Truly, John Hale; Mobile Magic Music (33.Music) "We're at the best parties!"

MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#836) June 30, 2010 [Wednesday] Hey, Jim...I hope all is well with you and Lacy. I'm a little late on this response...but what the heck. It has to do with favorite summer songs. I grew up on the south side of Ft. Worth, TX. A few miles from there, real close to Carswell Air Force base, was and still is, a great swimming spot..."Burger's Lake". Back in the 60's they had a juke box which could be heard by those who were swimming. Every time I hear "The Summer Song" by Chad and Jeremy my mind rushes back there..."Trees swaying in the summer breeze showing off their silver leaves...". Another "Chad and Jeremy" just hit me..."Yesterday's Gone". Let us not forget "Sandy" by Ronny and the Daytonas, as well. Now, that's summertime to me. Sorry I got carried away. "Well, she got her daddy's car and she cruised through the hamburger stand, Now...". I'm outta' here. Surf's up!!

Did anyone mention Cindy Walker's classic "Sugar Moon" or Mac Wiseman or Pat Boone's "Love Letters In the Sand?" Larry
